(I did read this thoroughly without an account before dropping it off) The internet is overflowing with so-called "cool and edgy" trends that end up rotting people's brains... and this is one of them. I'm surprised that gu zhen ren got off so lightly with just a ban on his novel, as Chapter 151 reads like g0r3 erotica, I do not care about the girl's death either, it just feels like a forcefully inserted n3cr0ph1lic "thing" from the author, it adds no substance for me to be given details on "the thighs and chest" when she was eaten by a bear, it's like if I told you "9/11 happened and oh how nice that was", it's meaningless and it's a complete waste of genuine talent. The novel constantly tries to force itself as a philosophical work, yet there's no real wisdom to be found. Worse, it blatantly misrepresents Buddhism (for example, the Buddha did not sacrifice his body; he received a proper cremation, and his remains were honored and preserved by kings)
What keeps this novel popular is the "TikTok brainrot" culture. Its fans latch to a power fantasy and average storytelling not because it's genuinely good, but because they've never been exposed to any other literary quality (that is not just self-jerking) before. They need instant gratification, overlooking anything of substance. A philosophy that is as shallow as a puddle. if given a realistic lens, it reads as "im so superior because I say so" as the MC keeps getting blessed by plot armor and that's why it appeals to the stupid masses.
Reverend Insanity was one of the first novels I picked up during the lockdown five years ago, but I had to set it aside twice because of entrance exams and other obligations. Now, after half a decade, I finally found the time to read through it.
When I first encountered Fang Yuan, I found him bewilderingly complex, perhaps because I was still a bit naive. Revisiting the story now feels rejuvenating and weirdly refreshing. I have never connected with a protagonist so deeply, his struggles, perseverance, and unwavering determination have sparked a passion and ambition I once lacked. It made me pursue a goal and not waste my potential.
Yet it isn’t only Fang Yuan; every character in this novel can teach you something if you are willing to listen. These lessons aren’t offered in school, and no one will hand them to you unprompted, you discover them through your own trials.
To me, this book is more than a novel, it is almost a sacred text. I hope my experience inspires you to read this masterpiece.
