Reverend Insanity is a bold and masterfully crafted novel that subverts traditional cultivation tropes. The story follows Fang Yuan, a cunning and ruthless anti-hero who reincarnates with 500 years of experience, determined to defy fate and rise to the top of a brutal, dog-eat-dog world. What sets this novel apart is its unapologetically dark protagonist, intricate world-building, and a power system (Gu cultivation) that is both creative and deeply strategic. The writing delves into philosophical themes such as survival, ambition, and morality, often challenging the reader's own beliefs. While not for the faint-hearted, Reverend Insanity rewards readers with complex characters, unpredictable twists, and an immersive, morally grey universe. It’s a refreshing, thought-provoking journey that pushes the boundaries of the xianxia genre. A must-read for fans of darker.

Don't listen to lisp he's retarded, this novel is peak and catered to people with specific tastes. If it ain't for you just move on, there is really no need to drop a one star review on a novel that's objectively considered one of the greatest just because you don't like it in particular.

Shadow Slave is one of the most overrated webnovels I’ve ever read. It starts strong but quickly becomes a repetitive grind filled with endless padding and pointless monologues. Sunny’s “I can’t lie” trait is more annoying than interesting, and the story bends over backward to protect him with dumb plot armor. Side characters barely matter, and the romance is just straight-up embarrassing  nonexistent for most of the novel, then weird and rushed. The pacing drags, arcs blur together, and the stakes feel fake. People call it deep, but it’s mostly just edgy fluff. Total letdown after the early chapters.

Anyone who says Fang Yuan is not evil should visit a pyschtrist. FY kills young children(makes them jump into fire),cheats and kills innocent people. I like the concept of the webnovel( end justifies the means )but you have a whole life experience and knowledge of living for 500 yrs and are going back into time

But i dont like the readers

Wanted to give it a try because of crazy fans sabotaging lotm reviews saying it's better but idk about that. Hilariously mediocre. It's one of the better cultivation novels but still a cultivation novel in the end with nothing really unique (unlike Lotm. Not even close). Very unlikable and edgy MC too. He will kill anyone to obtain immortality. Klein sacrificed himself and obtained immortality to save everyone. That itself is a good reflection of the fanbase itself too

This novel has some depth, sure—but I can’t really recommend it, for a few reasons.

First off, the writing style is empty, dull and lifeless. Things happen constantly—cultivating, killing, scheming—but you don’t 'feel' anything. There's barely a moment to breathe. No hope, no genuine victories, no emotional highs to balance the lows. It’s all suffering, darkness, and extreme events like genocide or sexual assault, often treated casually or even justified, without the emotional weight they deserve.

The prose is poor. There’s clearly little to no editing—some sections are confusing, and others repeat the same thing in back-to-back paragraphs using slightly different wording. Half of it is filler, dragging the story instead of moving it forward.

The biggest issue, though, is the main character. He’s not just a villain—he’s a full-on psychopath. He has 'so' many negative traits (murdering children without remorse, preaching about freedom while acting like a tyrant, blaming the world for everything, constantly paranoid, anti-social, dishonest, zero self-worth, no loyalty, no morals… the list goes on), but almost no positives. It's hard to root for or care about someone so one-dimensional. And in the early chapters, he comes off like an edgelord, constantly judging others while never reflecting on himself.

Even later on, his strategies feel basic and repetitive. His go-to move is “kill and take,” and while that sounds ruthless and clever at first, it gets old fast. He doesn’t think like a master manipulator—he just brute-forces his way through problems. And when he 'should' die, the author always throws in some lucky break, plot armor, or straight-up deus ex machina to save him. Meanwhile, stronger characters get killed off instantly, which makes the whole system feel unbalanced. And to top it off, all his progress gets reset at the end of every arc when he loses his Gu and gets nerfed, which makes all his scheming pointless.

The Gu system is more like Gu trash. At first, there are elemental Gu paths. Then later, characters start using "Qi," which is functionally the same thing as their internal energy. New paths are introduced constantly, but most are never explored in depth. Some boring ones drag on for hundreds of chapters, while interesting ones are barely mentioned. And the Gu abilities are ridiculous. There’s a Gu for everything, and there’s no real balance. The MC switches paths and suddenly becomes a top-tier melee fighter, even though his main path is Blood Path with ranged attacks—something he spent hundreds of years mastering in his previous life. Then he regenerates from near death with no cost just by buying a Gu—yet somehow no one else can do the same? It just doesn’t make sense.

The so-called “philosophy” is just edgy nihilism and bad motivational quotes that sound like they were pulled from Google. Like, there’s literally a scene where the MC murders a young girl and then rambles about becoming the Buddha and transcending life. How is anyone supposed to take that seriously?

Also, it’s not even proper xianxia. There’s no martial arts, no real training arcs, no real world-building around cultivation. It’s just a fantasy story with clans and sects slapped on. The Gu aren’t even insects or bugs when you think about it—they’re basically just magical artifacts that people craft. The author just took standard xianxia elements and tried to make them seem unique by renaming everything. Refining is literally just alchemy: follow a recipe, toss in ingredients, and out comes a Gu. There’s nothing truly original about it.

And the fights are awful. No choreography, no tension—just the MC chasing people down like Looney Tunes, hunting them one by one over multiple chapters, and killing them in the edgiest way possible (skulls exploding like 'watermelons', blood mist, etc.).

In short: Reverend Insanity tries to be dark and philosophical, but ends up being repetitive, emotionally flat, and kind of ridiculous.
