Yugioh Card Summoner
CH.645 Duel Runner Tournament, part 3

For the second duel of the quarter finals, we have Ula against Nir. Blackwing vs Dragunity.

For Field Spells, Nir picked Dragon Ravine; Rising Air Current; Mountain; Shrine of Mist Valley and Mausoleum of the Emperor.

Spoiler

[collapse]

As for Ula, with no dedicated Blackwing Field Spell, since I didn’t dare to make them one, she had an ever more difficult choice. She also picked Mountain, as well as Mystic Plasma Zone; Savage Colosseum; Necrovalley and Pseudo Space.

Spoiler

[collapse]

Now you might ask how Pseudo Space works, well, it automatically copies the Field Spell that was active before it. So it is basically just a random double up.

And as you may have noticed, both players picked Mountain, which is 100% allowed. It actually makes mirror matches some of the best that this tournament has to offer, as both players pick Field Spells that benefit their strategy.

For bans, Ula banned Dragon Ravine and Rising Air Current, while Nir banned Necrovalley and Mystic Plasma Zone.

The Field Spells chosen, the track was randomized, starting off with a Mountain. The two then drew their opening hands and prepared to start.

I had already teleported to the announcers booth, and Fantasia was flying above the startline with the starting flags. After she did her little countdown, she swung the flags down and the two were off.

Ula took the early lead, as Nir’s wolf-like duel runner didn’t have the best acceleration. It has good top speed, the best cornering of any used in the tournament, and even its breaking is good, just the acceleration is a bit lacking.

Ula’s on the other hand had good acceleration, decent top speed and good breaks, but it is a bit large for someone of her stature, so she struggled a bit with tight corners. Which isn’t the best as the two are heading straight into the Mountain Field Spell, which has plenty of tight corners, as the road there is built on the side of a mountain.

But still, Ula entered first, so she got the first Speed Counter and she would also be going first.

Ula began by summoning Blackwing - Kochi the Daybreak. She then special summoned Blackwing - Bora the Spear with its effect. She used the two as Synchro material to Synchro summon Blackwing Dragon. No, not Black-Winged Dragon, but Blackwing Dragon, my own custom version of it.

Spoiler

Blackwing Dragon

Level 8 Dark/Synchro/Dragon/Effect

2800/1600

1 "Blackwing" Tuner + 1 or more non-Tuner monsters

➀ This card is always also treated as a Winged Beast-Type monster.

➁ If you would take damage from a card effect, place 1 Black Feather Counter on this card instead.

➂ If this Synchro Summoned card would be destroyed by battle or card effect, you can remove 1 Black Feather Counter from this card instead, and if you do, target 1 face-up monster your opponent controls; that target loses 700 ATK, and if it does, inflict damage to your opponent equal to the ATK lost by this effect.

[collapse]

Black-Winged Dragon kind of sucks. So I wanted to make a slightly better version, which was still similar to the OG. I honestly don’t know if my version is much better, but it should be at least a bit.

Ula then set two cards face down and ended her turn.

Nir’s turn, and after he drew a card, both players got a Speed Counter.

He started off by activating the Continuous Spell Dragon Mastery. He then normal summoned Dragunity Aklys. He used its effect to summon Dragunity Militum and equipped Aklys to Militum. He then used Militum’s effect to special summon the equipped Aklys, before using the two cards to Synchro summon Dragunity Knight - Gae Dearg.

Spoiler

He then used Gae Dearg’s effect to add Dragunity Brandistock to his hand, and used Dragon Mastery to equip Brandistock to Gae Dearg. This, thanks to Dragon Mastery, granted Gae Dearg an extra 500 attack, which made it 100 points larger than Blackwing Dragon. And of course Gae Dearg can now attack twice.

Spoiler

[collapse]

Ula tried to speed away from Nir, towards the upcoming Mausoleum of the Emperor. Sure getting there wouldn’t affect the Blackwing Dragon’s death, but at least Ula could take 200 points less damage.

But Ula didn’t quite make it there, because Nir declared his attack and Gae Dearg destroyed Blackwing Dragon. Ula took 100 damage, which caused her to lose just a bit of control and she had to slow down.

Then, just before the Field Spell changed, Nir got his second attack in, causing 3100 damage to Ula. And thanks to that, Nir was able to overtake Ula just as the fields changed, so he gained the extra Speed Counter.

Nir then ended his turn.

Ula’s turn began, and after her draw, both duelists gained a Speed Counter.

She normal summoned Blackwing - Blizzard the Far North and used its effect to resurrect Blackwing - Bora the Spear. Ula activated her set Black Return and used it to return Nir’s Gae Dearg to his extra deck, and Ula gained 2900 life points. She then used her two Blackwings to Synchro summon Blackwing Armed Wing, and attacked Nir directly with it. Nir took 2300 damage.

She then ended her turn.

Nir’s turn began, he drew a card and both players gained a Speed Counter.

Nir normal summoned Dragunity Legionnaire, and used its effect to equip Dragunity Aklys from the GY to it.

He then used Legionnaire’s effect and sent Aklys back to the GY to destroy Ula’s Blackwing Armed Wing, which happened just fine. Aklys then activated, and Nir targeted and destroyed Ula’s set card with it. That card was Blackwing - Boobytrap, which would have been great, but Ula no longer controlled a Blackwing monster, so the Boobytrap couldn’t activate.

Spoiler

[Let me be honest for a second. I feel like Aklys would miss timing here. I’m not sure, I just feel like it would because Konami. But if that is the case, I’m just going to say Brian’s version is if instead of when, so it won’t miss timing because missing timing sucks.]

Nir then attacked directly with Legionnaire, and ended his turn.

Ula’s turn. She drew and they both gained a Speed Counter. The Field Spell also changed to the second Mountain and with Nir still leading the duel, he got an extra Speed Counter.

Ula then used four Speed Counters so she could draw an extra card. She followed that up by activating Black Whirlwind. She normal summoned Blackwing - Shura the Blue Flame and used Black Whirlwind to add Blackwing - Gale the Whirlwind to her hand, and she special summon it with its effect.

Spoiler

[collapse]

Ula used Gale the Whirlwind’s effect to halve the attack of Nir’s Dragunity Legionnaire, so it now had 750 attack. She then attacked it with her Shura the Blue Flame, which has 2000 attack thanks to Mountain, so Nir took 1250 damage. Shura’s effect then activated, so Ula summoned Blackwing - Kalut the Moon Shadow from her deck in attack position. Sure its effects are negated, but it can still attack, so Ula attacked with her two remaining Blackwings, causing 3100 damage.

Ula then ended her turn.

Nir’s turn. He drew a card and both players gained a Speed Counter.

Nir activated Cards of Consonance, sending Dragunity Phalanx to the GY, and drew two cards.

Spoiler

[collapse]

Nir then normal summoned Dragunity Dux, and with its effect, he equipped Dragunity Phalanx to it. He used Dragunity Phalanx’s effect to special summon it, played Level Tuning to raise the level of the two monsters by 1, and used the two monsters to Synchro summon Dragunity Knight - Barcha.

Spoiler

[collapse]

Dragunity Knight - Barcha’s effect activated and Nir used it to equip Brandistock, Aklys and Phalanx from the GY to it. This caused the monster to gain 900 attack and the ability to attack twice. Also Dragon Mastery gave Barcha an additional 500 attack, and since we are still in the Mountains, it gained 200 more attack, for a total of 3600.

Nir then activated Dragunity Divine Lance, equipping it to Barcha, which granted Barcha 1100 more attack. 800 because of the Lance and 300 more because of Barcha’s effect.

Spoiler

And with the 4700 attack dragon, Nir went to work. He attacked over Gale the Whirlwind and Shura the Blue Flame, causing a total of 5900 damage to Ula.

Nir then ended his turn.

Ula’s turn began, and she drew. And both players gained a Speed Counter. Also, the next change of Field Spells… except that the next Field Spell is Pseudo Space, so Mountain was repeated.

Ula didn’t do much with her turn. She just changed Kalut to defense, set a monster face down and ended her turn. Not the worst thing, as with two defense monsters she might get herself an extra turn, but I wouldn’t hold out hope.

Nir’s turn and he drew. And both players gained a Speed Counter.

Nir then did something I didn’t expect and used 6 Speed Counters to destroy a card. One of his own. The Dragunity Aklys equipped to his Barcha to be specific. This triggered Aklys’s effect, so Nir destroyed Ula’s face down monster, which happened to be Blackwing - Mistral the Silver Shield, so the first battle damage of this turn will be reduced to 0. So Ula is still in the duel.

Spoiler

[collapse]

Or she was until Nir’s next play. He used Dragunity Divine Lance’s effect to equip Dragunity Pilum to Barcha. This gave Barcha back the 300 attack it lost when Aklys was destroyed, but more importantly, Barcha can now attack directly. Sure the damage will be halved, but it didn’t matter.

Spoiler

Nir had Barcha attack Ula directly, twice, with the first one being negated by the effect of Mistral the Silver Shield, but in the end, Nir won the duel.
