Chapter 141: Cannot be Reached
ALEXA
While other families were celebrating the gift of a new life, Alexa and her mother were waiting to celebrate the loss of one.
It was mostly her mother, but Alexa was so annoyed by her Grandfather’s recent antics that she didn’t feel guilty about her sincere thoughts.
She still hated him for forcing her to work and for failing to protect their interests, not to mention the humiliation she had recently endured. So, she agreed to enact her mother’s plan.
Their plan was to drag Eliana and her family into muddy water, but that still involved exposing themselves to the public as distraught relatives.
She didn’t like how she had to appear destitute just to elicit pity.
Her version had always been the pure flower that was too clean to tarnish, that kind of look. Not this one where she looked like she uses food stamps.
What was annoying was that despite almost a week of doing this, nothing concrete was happening.
Then she heard the news of Eliana being rushed to another hospital.
That bitch!
In Alexa’s mind, this was a ploy by Eliana to drown the accusations of her being unfilial. Obviously, if they could prove the legitimacy of her hospitalization, she’d be able to give an excuse as to why she didn’t show up.
This was annoying because her mother was hoping to tie the Patriarch’s death to Eliana the moment she came to visit out of peer pressure.
But no such thing has happened, and now she’s confined.
Alexa’s mind worked like this because she had done the same thing earlier, pretending to check herself in at some retreat facility only to end up staying at some hotel.
So, she intended to prove Eliana’s ruse by showing how she wasn’t even really staying there.
"Mom, have you seen this?"
Alexa showed her mom the article about Eliana’s confinement, and her mother grimaced at it. She even looked like she was about to throw down her phone.
"We need to figure out what she’s there for. Or if she’s really even there, Mom."
"Who would do that? And with what money, Alexa?"
She didn’t like how her Mom sounded sarcastic, as if it was her fault they were in this mess to begin with.
Fine.
If she didn’t want to help, then she’d figure it out by herself.
She’d make sure to destroy her image once and for all since everyone else seemed to be incapable of doing something so easy.
When delusional people are hyper-focused on their narcissism, they forget how many times they’ve failed in doing precisely that.
When Alexa left the public hospital they were at, she figured she’d either find someone to provide her funds or someone to do the actual legwork for her.
So she began to dial people from her long list of admirers.
She started from the top of her list.
*Ring! Ring!*
The phone line just kept on ringing...
*Ring! Ring! Ring!*
Even when the second one didn’t pick up, Alexa just proceeded to call the third one.
*Beep—!*
And then the fourth one.
*The number you dialed is out of the coverage area. Please try your call later.*
By the time she was done, she’d called 10 people to no avail.
But luckily, the last one picked up!
"Hello, Ned!" Alexa greeted in a lovely tone.
The person at the other end of the call responded politely, "Sorry, who is this again? I changed my phone and haven’t bothered to transfer my contacts."
"Oh! I see, no wonder! It’s me, Alexa!"
No wonder this loser didn’t pick up right away!
As an avid fan, she couldn’t believe he would ignore her like that. Now she understood why.
"..."
"Sorry, you probably got the wrong number. My name isn’t Ned." Said the other person hurriedly
"You—!" Alexa was just about to call his bullshit when that bastard hung up on her!
Now she wanted to throw her own phone.
She can’t believe how these idiots who groveled at her feet would dare do something like this to her.
Alexa paced close to her car in agitation. These people are forcing her to resort to means she didn’t like.
But Alexa had no plans of being defeated just like this.
She’d find out what she wanted whether they liked it or not.
Her method was too easy, something she’s practiced quite a bit.
It wasn’t that difficult to seduce people, especially those who seemed to have never been desired in their lives.
One such person was this guard, Eddie, whose name was displayed by his name tag.
Alexa went there prepared with a disguise and started her act the moment her heels clicked softly against the tiled floor.
"Excuse me," she purred, leaning on the desk just enough to make her presence impossible to ignore.
"I think I’m a bit lost. Hospitals confuse me. It’s like a maze, don’t you think so too?"
Eddie, who had a bored look on his face earlier, suddenly came alive, just as Alexa had expected.
"Uh, yeah. It’s like that sometimes." Eddie stammered, his eyes kept darting back to her face.
Then Alexa began to show helplessness and vulnerability. "I’m actually looking for someone... a friend. But I’m not even sure if she’s still here."
She noticed him hesitating, and rightfully so since places like this valued privacy and would likely endanger his job. However, it wasn’t like Alexa to care about something like that.
"We’re not really allowed to give out information..." he started, but Alexa cut him off before he could fully say no.
"Oh, of course! I wouldn’t want you to get in trouble. It’s just... well..." Alexa bit her lip as if debating hard whether to confide in Eddie, who was more enamored the more she hesitated.
"It’s just that I was planning on surprising her. And can’t really just ask for her details. Plus, I’m really concerned as to how she’s doing."
This hospital was one of the biggest hospitals in the country and usually served the top echelon. So, it was a given that they would be staying on the top floor for VVIPs.
Eddie looked partially convinced, and Alexa tried to persuade him more: "She should’ve come a few days ago with her entire family. Normally, they stay on the top floor."
"You don’t really have to tell me more than just confirming if she’s still there and doing fine. So that I could safely send her my surprise."
Eddie scratched his head. "Well... now that you mentioned it. I did see someone who matched the descriptions, and they also received a few congratulatory gifts. So, maybe you could still send yours."
"Really? Then would you know what kind of gifts she got? So, I could avoid sending her those? I don’t want to send the same things as the others!"
"It’s the usual: large flower arrangements, balloons, and a few items with baby designs."
Alexa’s smile widened imperceptibly.
Jackpot.
"Thank you so much, Eddie! This would really help me out a lot!" Alexa thanked him as if she was really moved.
Well, she was, but for a totally different reason.
Was that bitch actually pregnant?
Wasn’t this just too good of an opportunity to pass up?
Alexa formulated a plan.
But she wasn’t the only person with one.
