Chapter 140: Future

ELIANA

The people in the room suddenly erupted into a chaotic mess as if electrocuted by a live wire.

A child gripped her father’s hair off while a cacophony of exclamations of congratulations sounded around me.

I could see the Doctor waiting for my response, but I was too dumbfounded to react.

Granted, this wasn’t impossible since they were active (really active), but I didn’t feel any symptoms until today.

This is probably early into the pregnancy, right?

"Doc, how far along am I?" That took a lot of willpower to ask because even with everyone around me in joyous exclamation, I’m still trying to come to terms with the fact that I’m the one pregnant!

"About that, I’d say about 10 weeks based on the baby’s data."

"10 weeks?!" Rina exclaimed from beside me, and I was with her in wondering about that.

"It went undetected for that long? Is that safe?" Lucian finally spoke up. His back was extremely taut, like a bowstring ready to fire, and it was then that I remembered to look at him.

And it wasn’t just me. We all looked at Lucian, who looked straight at the Doctor like he was going to do something unimaginable if the results weren’t something he liked.

"Both the mother and child are healthy. Thankfully, Mrs. Sinclair seems to maintain a rather healthy lifestyle."

"Based on the file we have, you don’t really partake in drinking as well as smoking, so that should help a lot in the subsequent prenatal care."

I looked down at my stomach, trying to recall if I’d experienced any sort of symptom. Then I remembered that weird craving for pickles and peanut butter.

Maybe that was on me for not noticing that even as an avid snacker, that was just too out there for my typical cravings.

I also didn’t get morning sickness until recently, and my period was expected to be a bit irregular after I stopped taking birth control pills.

"See, I told you, you’ve been snacking like a maniac recently!" Rina was about to tap me but was instinctively stopped by Lucian.

"What?" Rina asked, her wrist still held by Lucian.

"Don’t tap her. She’s pregnant." He had a serious look, and for a moment, I thought they were going to fight. But Rina proved to be a Sinclair through and through, reacting with the same brain cell.

"Oh yeah! Sorry, force of habit!"

"Uh, guys, I’m fine with it. It’s pregnancy, not an illness."

"Big Sis, that means you have a baby, right?" Lily still sat atop her father’s shoulders, but her eyes gleamed excitedly at the mention of a baby.

"When does the baby come out?" Lily leaned forward as if to hasten the baby’s arrival.

"Towards the end of the year, sweetie," I answered, calculating the typical duration of a pregnancy.

Woah.

I’m really pregnant, huh?

Next to my bed, Lucian suddenly stood up and asked the Doctor to show him the actual results.

But I didn’t even get the chance to ask as Lucian suddenly toppled over. Thankfully, he was caught by his father before he hit the floor.

"!!!"

"Lucian!"

That was unexpected. Even Lily got scared and asked if her brother was pregnant as well.

"No, honey, but your brother seems to wish that it was just him who’s pregnant."

I wanted to help out with Lucian but was advised by the Doctor not to move around.

Eventually, he was wheeled into the same room after regaining consciousness and demanding to return.

"Doc, what happened to my Grandson?" Grandpa asked, and the Doctor tried to keep a straight face as he explained what had happened.

"It seems like the Young Master forgot to breathe."

"I’m sorry, what?" Rina asked, her eyes nearly in slits as she processed what the Doctor had just said.

I looked at Lucian, who was pouting and scowling at the discussion, which he clearly disliked.

And I think I could guess what actually happened.

"HAHAHAHA!" The corner of my eyes teared up as I thought about the whole scenario.

The guy who looked so composed earlier had, in fact, forgotten how to breathe and passed out on his own.

"Honey, I think maybe we should concentrate on following you around instead." I teased the guy, who looked a tad bit angry already.

"Doc, is he okay now? Can he scoot over?"

My question shocked everyone but Lucian, who didn’t even bother waiting for the Doctor’s consent.

He just left his bed and climbed over to mine as if aggrieved that everyone in the room was ganging up on him.

"I guess that works, too." The Doctor’s expression was a bit awkward as he tried to accommodate everyone.

I pity him, but he’ll have it worse if Lucian sat there on his own.

When the Doctor finally left us to our own devices, the room was again bursting with energy.

Grandpa kept laughing at his alleged good fortune, and our parents talked about getting us a new house and a list of possible names.

Then there were Lily and Rina, who kept staring as if my stomach would grow the baby faster if they kept at it.

"Even if you stare at it like that, it’s not coming out tomorrow."

"I know that I’m just trying to absorb the fact that this kid wouldn’t just be a godchild. I’m related to this one by blood. Like that’s my best friend’s child right there, and we’re related!"

"You fixate on the weirdest things, huh?"

"Big Sis, is it a boy or a girl?"

"I’m not yet sure, but we can actually find out. Would it matter if it was a boy or a girl?" I asked Lily, who looked forward to hearing an answer.

"No, but if I know in advance, then I can prepare the right toys!" Lily clenched her fist like it was an important mission.

"Well darling, you’ll have a lot of time to think about toys. Maybe you could pick a few books instead?"

Lily was about to respond when Lucian showed me his phone with a list of award-winning children’s books and a few books that even elementary school students wouldn’t be able to read.

"You want those for the baby?" I looked at him pointedly, wanting to see if he was joking.

"I already ordered them. I have to check the contents for possible errors. The baby might pick up something weird if the books are bad."

You don’t say?

You want the baby to listen to the introduction to the periodic table. If the baby doesn’t turn out weird, then I wouldn’t know anymore.

The chaos only grew from there as everyone became concerned about something that was far off in the future.

Lucian was told to rest but kept on looking for everything he could read and memorize.

Even as the night deepened, our small yet loud family kept determining how they would schedule caregiving hours, as if Lucian had ever given them the opportunity.

My unflappable husband had just grown into his new role and took it more seriously than bidding for a national project.

He fit himself next to me while dutifully scanning everything with his brain.

"Hey, you look like a dad like this," I whispered into his ear before softly kissing his cheek.

And I think I’m starting to like this, too.
