Chapter 910: Chapter 27: The City with No Chances
"These people are just..." Even as she was pushed into the private room, Catherine still kept looking back reluctantly until she was forced to sit down. Then she grumbled a few words unwillingly, opening the wine list handed over by the room attendant, but the next moment, with a snap, she had shut the hardcover wine list with a very serious expression on her face, standing up while saying, "Let’s go."
"Hey," Pannis had been ready and immediately pushed her back into the chair with an expression of amused exasperation, "I knew you’d react like this. Sit down already, look, the waiter is giving you weird looks."
"I’d rather be despised," Catherine said with wide eyes, lowering her voice. "A bottle of champagne costs over a hundred gold coins, a bottle of wine more than a thousand, and the top-shelf stuff costs six or seven thousand gold coins a glass, oh my god, it would be cheaper to kill me."
"Stay calm, please stay calm," Pannis said, holding down the fiercely struggling knight girl and whispering in her ear, "Have you forgotten? We too were invited to that meeting, you remember what that means, right? It means that all our normal expenses here are jointly covered by the two hosts and one organizer, namely the City of Knowledge, the Elven Royal Court, and Neville Federal Parliament. So there’s absolutely no need to worry about the price."
"But that’s for normal expenses," Catherine stopped struggling and whispered back, "and how can this be normal? Those three aren’t fools, they wouldn’t pay for this sort of spending."
"Of course, this wouldn’t be considered normal expenses elsewhere," Pannis slowly released her and said. "But this isn’t just anywhere, this is Neville City, where these kinds of expenses are the norm."
"Are you serious?" Catherine gave Pannis a skeptical look. "You aren’t tricking me, are you?"
"Of course, I’m not," Pannis replied helplessly. "All the invitees can go to City Hall with the city spending vouchers and get their gold coins reimbursed, so just sit back and relax."
"I see..." Catherine had a moment of realization, pondering, then said, "Well then, waiter, bring us ten... mmmph mmmph mmmph."
Before the knight girl could say something impolite, Freya, with speed that did not match her physique, lightning-fast put her hand over her mouth, choking back the rest of her words, barely preserving the reputation of the adventure team. Even Pannis sighed in relief and nodded, saying, "Exactly, how could one make such a request, waiter, we’ll have twenty... mmmph mmmph mmmph."
Obviously, Vivian’s area of Silence Spell had perfectly accomplished its task, timely controlling another unstable element within the adventure team. Freya finally relaxed and straightened her appearance, smiling shallowly at the baffled waiter, saying, "It’s nothing, don’t mind those two, please prepare two fruit platters, two bottles of Wentley white wine, a bottle of Sosa champagne, and a glass of Noka Juice with ice, thank you."
"Yes, please wait a moment," the waiter, puzzled, bowed and withdrew. It was only then that Freya let her shoulders sag, leaning back in the chair powerlessly, and muttered as she rubbed her temples, "You two are just too much. Big sis, seriously, isn’t Pannis crazy enough by himself? Why are you stirring up trouble too? And you, Pannis, stop laughing. Big sis can’t help herself when she hears about something that doesn’t cost gold, and you don’t have that problem. Not stopping her is one thing, but you even wanted to double her requests. If we actually did that, our adventure team’s reputation would be totally ruined. Ah, thankfully we reacted quickly."
"Hehehe," Catherine, covering her right face, gave a foolish grin, sheepishly saying, "It was actually an accident, hahaha, just an instinct, yes, that’s right, the instinct of life. You must understand, right? Hahaha."
"Big sis, you’re becoming more and more like that jerk Pannis," Vivian pouted, "Even your way of changing the subject is so similar, tsk tsk, it’s really something to be envious of."
"Hey, is it really okay to call me a jerk to my face like this?" Pannis said grievously, "Besides, I only said that not to disappoint Catherine. Actually, I... hey hey hey, don’t hit, don’t hit."
In the midst of Catherine’s angry chase, Pannis finally got through until the private room door was knocked again. When the waiter, carrying the tray, opened the door, he found everyone seated with serious expressions inside the room as if nothing had happened, leading him to deeply believe that the terrible scene he had witnessed through the window had been but a figment of his imagination.
After drawing the curtains of the private room, shutting out the dazzling lights from outside and leaving only the sounds of music wafting in from the stage. The style of music from Neville City, although not to the majority’s taste, had to be admitted it was not unpleasant to listen to. After a while, it was even possible to feel a passionate outburst within and it was not inferior to the style of music from the Holy City.
The music was intense, the lighting soft, the atmosphere comfortable, and the liquor fragrant. Fairly speaking, this was indeed a very good place for diversion. Of course, it would have been better without those indulging in excess. Unfortunately, this wish couldn’t be fulfilled. Catherine, holding her cup of wine and peeking through the lifted curtain at the guests below, shook her head and sighed, "I really don’t like the atmosphere here, nor the atmosphere of the entire city. You said we might be able to find the source of this influence ourselves, but so far, even though I have some guesses, I feel there are still many inexplicable aspects."
"It’s alright, we can take it slowly," Pannis picked up his cup and gently clinked it with the knight girl’s, swirling the liquid, sniffed it leisurely and said, "Actually, describing this city as a city full of opportunities is not incorrect, but it’s not comprehensive. There’s another half of the description left unsaid."
"What is it?" Catherine sipped from her cup and asked in a low voice, "Hmm, I think I might have guessed a bit. The other half of the description, is it that it’s also a city completely devoid of opportunities?"
"Heh, despite the contradiction, you guessed right," Pannis nodded, "A city filled with opportunities yet devoid of any is naturally going to lead to nothing but frenzied indulgence and the pursuit of happiness. Besides that, what else can they do?" (To be continued. If you like this work, please visit Qidian (qidian.com) to cast your recommendation votes or monthly votes.
