Chapter 911: Chapter 28: Neville’s Style of Carjacking

"Hahaha, lalala," on the bustling street where the shadows flickered, groups of passersby threw their arms over each other’s shoulders, swaying with bottles in their hands, laughing unrestrainedly as they crowded forward, leaving behind nothing but the heavy scent of alcohol. The doors of Tonight Homes reopened, and the five members of the adventure team walked out together. The two ushers at the entrance looked back but weren’t surprised that the group had left after just over an hour inside. Nightlife here often went like this, with patrons constantly changing venues, enjoying different types of services, until they were thoroughly intoxicated. So, the ushers just made a polite bow, smiling as they said, "Mr. Pannis, we hope the atmosphere in our establishment reminded you of the old days. It would be our greatest honor if you were satisfied with the service this evening."

"Thanks, I’ll come again," Pannis waved without looking back, but muttered to himself, "Though I reckon there won’t be another chance, tsk tsk, even if I wanted to come, I won’t be able to.

"Of course, we’ll keep an eye on you. A vile place like this, you never know what might happen when you’re here alone." After downing a bottle of wine, Catherine’s face flushed a more captivating shade of red. Hearing Pannis’ muttering, she snorted, "So you can give up on that idea. You won’t have the chance to indulge in entertainment like this again, humph. Where to next? Just say it, and if it’s going to be as bad as this place, don’t bother taking us there. Although the environment isn’t bad, the atmosphere is simply unbearable."

"Don’t worry, our next destination caters to the top echelons of the Neville Federation, no, the entire Yarran World." Pannis shook his head and said, "Only a select few qualify to enter. Even if one is wealthy or holds great power, they will not provide service without the necessary status."

"Oh? Money and power aren’t enough?" pondered Catherine, "Aren’t these two things often symbols of status and position? Aren’t they usually enough, especially in the Neville Federation?"

"Clearly, they’re not enough," Pannis shrugged. "Don’t be fooled by the facade that the Neville Federation judges everything by money. In reality, it’s not like that at the top."

"I think we’re beginning to understand why this city is so decadent, not just the city, but the entire Neville Federation seems to be engulfed in this numb atmosphere. We always thought it was due to their excessive pursuit of money, but now it seems it’s not the case; it’s probably for the same reason that this city indulges in decay," Catherine and Freya exchanged looks and nodded in agreement, "You’ve mentioned the same problem many times throughout our journey, that of status and position. That’s the key issue, isn’t it?"

"Hehe, let’s go. We’ll head to our final destination for tonight." Pannis looked around and suddenly charged into the middle of the street towards a carriage, grabbing the moving carriage from behind. With the immense strength of a demigod, the two horses in front tried to pull but couldn’t move the carriage a single centimeter. Two people on the carriage, startled, poked their heads out and were about to scold the intruder in anger, when a purse flew out of Pannis’ hand, hitting one of them. The struck passenger was taken aback, weighed the purse subconsciously, and his angry expression was instantly replaced by joy. Grabbing their companion, they jumped off the carriage as quickly as possible, as if afraid that Pannis would change his mind, and without a word, they turned and ran, disappearing from the street in an instant, their speed almost reflecting the quality of professionals.

"Ah, quite the Neville-style carriage heist." The girls showed no surprise at Pannis’ actions or the passengers’ reactions. This was the characteristic style of Neville, told in rumors: unbothered by face or dignity, no problem that gold couldn’t solve. If there was, it simply meant you hadn’t offered enough coins. Catherine sneered and said, "But this contradicts the key issue we just discussed, doesn’t it?"

"That’s because this is just a public carriage," Mr. Pannis said, standing beside the carriage door like a gentleman, helping the young ladies aboard one by one. The coachman at the front showed no reaction to the events unfolding behind him until Mr. Pannis uttered a destination, at which point he looked back in surprise but said nothing, simply turning around to start driving. Mr. Pannis squeezed into a corner of the carriage and continued, "Moreover, our attire and demeanor are sufficiently presentable. It is only in the face of someone of a higher station than themselves that the locals here will exhibit the rumored behavior. If it were a bunch of poor people in tattered clothes doing what we just did, even if they were to throw twenty gold coins in the same manner, they would throw them back in the same manner, possibly along with a slap or spit."

"So it’s still about status and position?" Catherine propped her chin, staring disdainfully out the carriage window at the stumbling pedestrians, "Such blatant behavior is simply disgusting."

"But that’s their custom," shrugged Mr. Pannis. "As outsiders, all we need to do is observe. Hmm, our final destination for tonight is a bit far, tucked away in a corner of the city—so let’s summon a little more patience."

"We’re not qualified to enter such a place, are we?" Freya inquired, puzzled. "According to what you just said, only the uppermost echelons have the privilege of entry, and it’s clear we’re not among them. Hmm, perhaps you are?"

"If this were back in the day, they might grudgingly admit I had the right to entry," Mr. Pannis said with a mocking smile. "As for now, haha, I obviously don’t qualify. But don’t worry, if I say I’m going to show you around, of course I have a special method that will make them accept us."

"It’s not going to be sneaking in using your domain, is it?" Vivian, who had been silent and lost in thought, suddenly spoke up. "That’s probably the simplest way."

"Of course not. There are rules to the game that one must follow; breaking them isn’t always effective everywhere," said Mr. Pannis, chuckling and shaking his head. "Besides, the place we’re going to, if we were to just sneak in, it would be pointless, better not to go at all."

"Then we’ll wait and see your special method," Catherine said, her eyes swirling with a tipsy gaze as she playfully rolled her eyes at Mr. Pannis and smiled. "I hope we won’t be disappointed."

"I’m afraid you’re bound to be disappointed," said Mr. Pannis, shaking his head mysteriously. "It’s a very ancient way, but it’s effective."(To be continued.
