Chapter 905: Chapter 22 Neville City
By the time the group arrived at Neville City on the fourth evening, the city gates of Neville were within sight, and the distant glow of city lights was visible, but the group did not rush into the city. Instead, they stopped far off on the roadside to tidy up their attire. Under normal adventuring circumstances, the girls wouldn’t pay such special attention to their appearance as they were now, but this occasion was far from ordinary. After all, they were accompanied by the Elf Queen, and their image now represented not just themselves but the Adventurer’s and Mage’s Guilds as well; even Vivian, who usually cared the least about such matters, had to take it seriously.
The journey from the Holy City, despite having a magic-powered motorbike for transportation, took almost four days to traverse the entirety of Neville, fortunately, their route was well-planned, finding suitable villages to rest in every night, making their travels not too wearying. The only thing that surprised the girls was Fula, who joined midway and had been following along since. In their imaginations, the Elf Queen, a spiritual leader of the Elves, was supposed to be someone accustomed to comfort and incapable of enduring long travels, however, it turned out that during the four-day journey, while the girls could take turns driving and resting, Fula alone rode her Black Panther mount the entire time. Despite this, she appeared relaxed and at ease all throughout, showing no signs of tiredness, even as an enemy, the girls couldn’t help but admire her in their hearts.
"No matter my current status, I was once a professional adventurer in the Elven Forest," Fula explained with a smile, resolving the girls’ doubts, "You can ask that person there pretending to enjoy the scenery. Among the wilderness survival skills that he knows, the ones with the distinctive Elf style, all were learned from me. Don’t think just because I don’t do much by myself now that I was any slower than you at setting up camps and processing game a hundred years ago, especially during several forest adventures, hehe, if it wasn’t for my teaching, that person who’s now counting ants would probably still not be able to tell the difference between spire mushrooms and black tree mushrooms. Hey, Kyle, you wouldn’t still mistake spire mushrooms for dinner now, would you?"
"Ahem, it’s quite cool tonight," Pannis coughed a few times, then suddenly exclaimed with surprise, "Hey, look, even after such play, the gates of Neville City are wide open; that’s really odd."
"Those gates haven’t been closed for seven years now," Catherine said with an eye roll, "You, that guy, even your techniques for changing the subject are so unprofessional. Come on, let’s go; if we delay any further, we might not find a place to stay. I don’t want to have had a place to stay all the way here and end up having to sleep on the streets upon arrival."
"Don’t worry, big sis," Freya said, slouching lazily over the steering tiller of the motorbike, speaking listlessly, "Even if the inns are all full, it’s okay. We have the Elf Queen as our flag, after all. If we can’t find a place to stay, we can just use the excuse of accompanying Her Majesty the Queen to the meeting to have the City Hall arrange accommodations. Such a convenient reason, I really don’t understand why you don’t use it, plus we’d save on inn costs. Wow, that’s gold coins, you know, and you actually are willing to waste them. Are you still my big sis? Have you been mentally controlled by some Mage? Give me back my big sis, ouch, don’t hit my head; big sis, why are you picking up Vivian’s bad habits, ow, dummy Vivian, I didn’t do anything this time, and you’re hitting me again."
"You’re the dummy," Catherine huffed, without offering any explanation. Everyone understood her train of thought; the girls shared a similar sentiment to hers, they didn’t want to rely on the enemy’s status for convenience unless absolutely necessary, a notion that seemed naïve and immature, yet was a firm stance for the girls.
Obviously, Fula was well aware of Catherine’s thoughts, and just laughed amusedly, being considerate enough not to comment on the matter. She leaned against a tall tree by the roadside, gazing toward the distant city gates, and remarked leisurely, "It’s been over a hundred years since I last entered Neville City; I wonder if this city has changed at all over the years."
"No change whatsoever," Pannis shrugged, his tone mocking, "The same decadence, the same indulgence, the same self-numbing, it remains so even after more than a hundred years."
"Is it really that exaggerated?" Suddenly, Lina, who had been preoccupied with her thoughts, spoke up, "Why don’t I feel that way?"
"Because you were too young when you left Neville City," Pannis shook her head, "So you wouldn’t have such deep feelings about it. Catherine, none of you have been to the eastern part of Neville City either, right? Once you go there, you’ll understand."
"Like the City of Innocence?" Catherine seemed to understand something and tentatively asked, "It should be similar to the City of Innocence, right, those neighborhoods that treat night as day?"
"Mm... You could say there are similarities, but it’s not exactly the same," Pannis pondered for a moment, "The City of Innocence is about decadence, while Neville City embodies decay and indulgence. It’s hard to explain clearly in words; if you are interested, we can take a walk in the eastern district tonight. You will definitely gain a more intuitive understanding."
"Hmm, that sounds good." The young girls looked at each other and saw curiosity in each other’s eyes. Catherine nodded and said with a grave face, "After all, I have only heard about it, never witnessed the prosperity of Neville City myself. Even though I’ve passed by a few times, I’ve never been to the eastern district at night. It would be good to take a look this time, at least to deepen our understanding of the Neville Federation."
"Pfft." Fula couldn’t help laughing out loud; she tapped the trunk of a tree behind her, using some technique unknown to the others. A branch seemed to come alive, drooping down, and the immature fruit on it grew and ripened before their eyes. The Queen plucked the fruit and took a bite, teasing, "Curiosity is something everyone experiences, no need to make excuses for it."
"This is not about curiosity, it’s about scouting the enemy." Catherine, who always struggled to remain calm in front of her adversary Fula, blushed and turned away her head, saying flusteredly, "Hurry up, hurry up, we need to set off soon. We still have to find an inn to arrange our luggage, stop dawdling."
"Hehe, such adorable girls, even cuter than Nellie," Fula’s gaze shifted to Pannis, saying with a smirk, "Don’t you think so, Kyle?"
Pannis didn’t join the conversation, just gazing at the distant Neville City where the city lights were dazzling, illuminating the dark night sky. (To be continued.
