Chapter 904: Chapter 21: Taking the Initiative

"Is it really appropriate for us to run off ahead of time like this?" On the third day after the Elf Embassy arrived in Holy City, three magic-powered motorbikes quietly left the gates of the City of Knowledge. The adventure team’s six members were paired up on the magic-powered motorbikes. As for Pannis, other than Catherine supporting his waist while sitting on the rear seat of the motorbike, there was also a Teddy Bear in the front seat that constantly made loud exclamations and, when excited, would even detach its head to wave it in the air. And Catherine, who sat on the back seat, despite voicing such worried and rational words, couldn’t suppress the smile on her face, betraying her emotions at the moment. It seemed that ever since they decided last night to head to Neville City ahead of schedule, the smiles on the young girls’ faces had never faded.

Of course, Lina had to be excluded from this. She was the only girl who was not happy about leaving early. Although she didn’t object, it was clear from her expression that she was very uneasy. Throughout the night, aside from her daily routine prayers, she mostly sat in her room, lost in thought. Everyone was not surprised by her behavior; everyone was very aware that Neville City was connected to the memories Lina most resisted deep inside her heart, it was where she was most vulnerable. However, no one could comfort her at that time. Or rather, no one’s comfort would be effective. Perhaps only by confronting the wounds deep within her own heart could she move on from the painful regrets and face a new future. But for now, she clearly hadn’t stepped out of the shadows, sitting behind Vivian, still staring blankly at the fleeting scenery by the roadside, with nobody knowing what was really going on beneath her calm exterior.

Although Lina was troubled deep inside, a visit to Neville City was mandatory; likewise, no matter how much one resists, some things always require gathering the courage to confront. Thus, she had not opposed the plan to travel to Neville City from the start, and, in fact, was the first to approve it. So, even though Catherine and Freya kept saying that it wasn’t in line with diplomatic etiquette and that it would be rude, their hands were quicker than anyone else’s – one collaborating with Vivian to tune the three magic-powered motorbikes and the other responsible for organizing the equipment and supplies needed for the trip, all to ensure everything was ready as quickly as possible, even wishing they could set off overnight.

In this contradiction of actions, the next morning, they left a note saying, ’We’ll wait for you in Neville City,’ and silently hit the road. However, before they departed, an amusing incident occurred. The plan was originally for Annie to hide in her Memory Crystal and set off with everyone else, but as soon as the idea was mentioned, Little Deer, who had always been obedient, burst into loud cries. Although skeletons do not shed tears, the mournful wailing and the intensely flickering Soul Fire in her eye sockets clearly conveyed her agitation and sorrow. The naive little skeleton didn’t understand that the girls wanted to leave her at home for her safety, and in a child’s simple yet sensitive mind, after decades of loneliness, having finally found a sister to accompany her, she was now facing another separation, a painful loss regained tore at her heart. Moreover, the idea of her sisters, whom she regarded as parents, taking her sister out but leaving her at home felt profoundly unfair, making it hard for Little Deer to stop crying, no matter how much the girls tried to explain.

Finally, the girls really had no choice but to compromise as they could not persuade her, and when it came time to scold her, seeing her cowering like a newly born hamster, they couldn’t bear to continue scolding. It was hard to imagine why a mere skeleton could evoke such heart-wrenching emotion. Reluctantly, even Pannis had to agree to take Little Deer along with them. Still, everyone had their limits and decidedly refused to take her into the Forest of Death. Before entering the forest, they planned to leave her in the care of the elves. Of course, Little Deer did not agree to this. After some bargaining, a compromise was reached: she could enter, but only her head could go in, ensuring her safety. Once the grown-ups clearly would not concede any further, she finally stopped crying and happily went off to play with Annie. The quick shift from crying to laughing left the six of them sighing helplessly, utterly at a loss for what to say.

"Stop playing with your head already. If you carelessly let go and it flies off somewhere, we’re not helping you find it," Catherine leaned out and threatened, and then sighed from behind Pannis’s back, "Are we spoiling these two little things too much? They’re becoming more and more of a headache, sigh."

"Isn’t that exactly your intent?" Pannis, controlling the helm with one hand and swiftly snatching Little Deer’s Teddy Bear head with the other, held it high up in the air. The laughter of the little one came from the Teddy Bear head, while her headless body stretched upward trying to reclaim its head. It was fortunate that it was early morning and there were virtually no pedestrians on the road – otherwise, such a horrific scene would certainly be processed into an urban legend soon after, circulating endlessly among the youth. After teasing the little skeleton for a while, Pannis returned her head amid her spoiled protestations, and with a smile, continued, "You see, they’ve become much more like normal children now. Wasn’t that what you hoped for from the beginning? They’re lively and cheerful, countless times better than when we first met them."

"Don’t you think they are too lively and cheerful?" Catherine rolled her eyes and said, "Including Lina’s twins, when they get together, it’s beyond lively and cheerful."

"Hahaha, that’s the price to pay, can’t help it," Pannis laughed heartily, teasing, "If you’re already this troubled, I can’t help but worry about your future life—ouch, that hurts, why are you pinching people again?"

"That’s the price to pay," Catherine smiled gently, her voice soft, as if the ungentle act was done by someone else, "Can’t help it, right?"

"Not right at all, hey, stop." Pannis was complaining when he suddenly exclaimed; abruptly, he stomped on the brakes, and three magic-powered motorbikes stopped in the middle of the road.

Following Pannis’s gaze forward, at the edge of the road within their line of sight, a black jungle panther covered in black with a few patterns on its forehead lay quietly by the roadside. A green figure was sitting sideways on the panther’s back, using a hunting bow as a harp, occasionally strumming a few discordant notes. Upon seeing the magic-powered motorbikes stop, the green figure gently waved his hand and leisurely said, "I told you, this time I’m the one taking initiative."

"Ah." Catherine could only let out a helpless sigh, unable to say another word. (To be continued. If you like this work, you’re welcome to vote for it on qidian.com, or cast a monthly vote. Your support is my greatest motivation. Mobile users, please visit m.qidian.com to read.)
