Chapter 512: Chapter 76: Vivian’s Elemental Barrier_1

"Are we sure about this place?" Catherine slumped to the ground, took out a water bottle, guzzled half of it, wiped the sweat off her forehead, and asked, "Can your defense system completely block the enemy’s attack?"

"Unless another demigod shows up, even if they attack relentlessly, this fortress can withstand it for thirty minutes." Freya confidently replied, "With Vivian’s shield array, they can’t break through here unless they have an hour."

"Good." Catherine heaved a sigh of relief. But as she looked around the fortress casually, her eyes turned red and she stared blankly at the ground. On the ground, more than twenty blank five-thousand-Tael crystals were scattered in disorder. Catherine jumped up to her feet, her fingers trembling. She screamed and pointed at the crystals, her voice filled with desperation and faint hope, "These, these, these crystals, they must have been blank to begin with, right? Haha, haha, you certainly did not just use them up, right? Absolutely not, hahaha."

"Face reality, sister." Lina patted Catherine’s shoulder sympathetically and sighed, pointing at the twenty crystal energy guns hovering around, "I watched Freya charge these crystal guns one by one. You’re bound to be disappointed."

"Oh, no." Catherine clutched her head and moaned, "Freya, you fiend, how could I forget your habit? You use crystals like Pannis eats pasfruits so casually. God, please have mercy on me."

"Hey sis, you can’t handle this?" Freya didn’t show any remorse and instead, pointed at Vivian with glee, "Go check out Vivian’s set up. Hopefully, you won’t collapse."

Catherine turned her head cautiously, almost closing her eyes, peeked through a slit and quickly scanned Vivian. She took a deep breath and said, "That’s a relief, it’s only three blank crystals. Wait, when I just came in, there weren’t any. Why are there suddenly three?"

Vivian sat cross-legged in the center of the array, mechanically dropped the blank crystal in her hand, took another five-thousand-Tael crystal from the pocket in front of her, and said absent-mindedly, "Why? Of course, it’s because I used them. I extracted the crystal energy from the crystal. Of course, it becomes blank."

"Hey, slow down your absorption, will you. You’re depleting them too quickly." Catherine said in despair, "What are you doing, using that amount of crystals?"

"Charging the array." Vivian finally snapped back and responded in confusion, "You can’t possibly think that I can maintain such a powerful array with my mana alone, right?"

"Not really. It’s just your consumption speed." Catherine said bitterly, "I’ve been here for three minutes, and you’ve used up four pieces. Are you using up one per minute?"

"It’s not that exaggerated." Vivian shook her head, "It’s just that the array needs to be fully charged when it started. One more should do it. The rest can be supplemented as they deplete. I estimate that it needs about ten pieces in total."

"Ten crystals. Compared to Freya, that’s actually not bad." Catherine felt like she was going insane. She actually felt relieved when she heard she would be using crystals worth ten thousand gold coins. But the feeling of relief vanished when Vivian casually added, "Yep, every time."

"Hang on?" Catherine stiffens, her voice raspy, "What do you mean by ’every time’?"

"It means that we’ll need that much each time we set up the array." Vivian answered matter-of-factly, "We’ll need to set it up again each time we want to move it. We’ll likely use the same amount each time. Well, maybe one or two less, it depends on the strength of their attack."

"I think I’ll just go out and keep using my legion skills." After standing in silence for a while, Catherine numbly picked up her shield and knight sword and said, "If I stay here, I think I might die of heartbreak."

"Effort brings reward." Freya spoke in an almost lyrical tone. "Master Simon once said: we gain nourishment from the sweat and toil; we gain knowledge from the heartful studying; we gain honor from the sacrifice of blood and life; humans always weigh their costs.... oh, alright, alright. I’ll shut up."

Catherine withdrew her fierce gaze, sighed deeply, dropped her weapon again, and said weakly, "Anyway, we’ll have to look harder since our energy consumed so much; we can’t rest for too long. Lina, you’ll go out with me to search in a bit. We may find it faster if we work together. But be careful and avoid getting seriously injured."

"That’s exactly what I was thinking." Lina removed her hammer and wiped it with a cloth. "We’ll have two people each inside and outside, so we can support each other if there’s a problem. I just don’t feel secure letting you go out alone."

"Boom." Another bout of intense impact and the sound of magic exploding, but the fortress was still standing firm without a quiver. Catherine didn’t hurry to leave but sat down to recover her strength. She asked with some surprise, "How come I still hear magic, how did you two construct these two layers of defense?"

"The outer layer is naturally my shield." When it came to magic-related topics, Vivian immediately became energetic and explained seriously, "Do you remember the Elemental Barrier that enveloped our world of Yarra? Of course, my shield isn’t related to it, but I was somewhat inspired by it. My Elemental Barrier is also filled with free elements, compressed onto an invisible light film. The light film doesn’t have any defensive properties, anything can pass through it. Yet, anything besides energy and ranged attacks, such as people and weapons, will cause the light film to counter with magic attack automatically, as if they are hit by my intense single-target magic every second. The weakness of this tactic lies in the Array. Unless they destroy the Array, they cannot attack the intangible light film. They can only endure the bombardment of magic until the energy of the Array is exhausted, which is why I need to constantly charge the Array."

"What if they find a way to destroy the Array?" Catherine asked. "They are controlled, but they should still have basic judgment skills. They should be able to think of destroying the source."

"That’s when my moving fortress comes in." Freya spoke proudly, "My fortress perfectly covers the Array. They would have to destroy my fortress first if they want to destroy the Array. But I have full faith in the strength of goblin metal. It won’t be easy to bring down this fortress."

"I’ve been wanting to ask this." Catherine nodded and then questioned, "Is this whole thing made of goblin metal?"

"Most of the parts, including all the exterior and interior walls, are made of goblin metal, collected from goblin relics and were part of the teacher’s collection." Freya explained, "But because I assembled many parts myself, some key components are made of ordinary metal. However, they do not bear the impact and are not exposed to the outside, so it’s hard for them to be directly attacked."

"Impressive." Catherine admired, "So doesn’t that make your combined defense impregnable?"

"How is that possible?" Freya expressed a bitter smile and shook her head, "If the opponent also has a mechanic at my level and I just let them attack, they would find the weakness of the fortress within three minutes and make the whole fortress collapse within five minutes. Of course, I wouldn’t be foolish to watch them attacking the weak point, so the rest is the match between our mechanics’ offense and defense. However, I doubt there are any mechanics among these controlled Sea Racers. Even if they have, I don’t think they can maintain the observation skills and judgment under the controlled state, which are the keys in a match between mechanics."

"Even with weaknesses, it’s quite impressive," Catherine stated, "but if the enemy targets underground..."

"That would be my job." Lina patted her chest, causing it to jiggle, "Under the glory of my Lord, it would be utterly foolish for anyone attempting to attack from underground or heading towards the ground."

"Then I can rest assured, it does seem secure here." Catherine considered a moment, then stood up and said, "Rest enough, Lina. Let’s get ready to go out and search."

"I’ve been ready." Lina got up with her hammer and spell book. She had already put on her leather armor over her priest robe. The leather was made from the hide of the Earth Walker she and Pannis had killed. The rest of the hide wasn’t made into another piece of armor, but into a pair of arm protectors, a pair of leg protectors, and a wide belt. Vivian had personally engraved several enhancement arrays on the protectors. When Lina used the Enhancement Magic to enhance her power and physical strength, it could greatly extend the duration of the Divine Spell. Although they didn’t seem special, they were extremely practical for Lina. As they were just completed before the departure, Lina was excited and carried them with her. However, she never had the chance to use them. This was her first time wearing these pieces. The rest of the girls were wishing that there will never be a chance for them to take effect, at least defending effect. Lina, of course, didn’t know what the other girls were thinking. She adjusted her new gear curiously, and then nodded at Catherine, "Ready to go any time."

Beyond the outer wall of Freya’s moving fortress, a door leading to the outside world opened again. The controlled Sea Racers who had been attacking the fortress naturally wouldn’t hesitate, they rushed towards the door, then were ruthlessly blasted away by the magical attacks of the Elemental Barrier. Drawing upon this chance, Catherine and Lina darted out, one ahead and one behind. The door closed slowly behind them; then the crystal guns all around the fortress started to boom. (To be continued.
