"Bang." A mechanical hand made of metal rested on the edge of the corner, and even at a distance of a hundred meters, one could clearly see the shape of the mechanical hand, showing how enormous the hand was. As it took thundering steps forward, its body emerged from around the corner, walking against the wall—a humanoid puppet displaying obvious goblin characteristics in its design.
On the outside, the head of this metal puppet was similar to that of a goblin, having sharp ears, a long pointed nose, a small cranium, and a short neck, all made to look exactly like a member of the goblin race. However, there was a significant difference between it and actual goblins. It stood almost eight meters tall, with all other parts of its body enlarged proportionally. Its gigantic body made the sewers next to it—even those that were twenty to thirty meters in diameter—feel incredibly constrained. However, although the space was cramped, there was just enough room for the puppet to walk and fight normally without experiencing too much difficulty.
"What is that thing?" Catherine stared wide-eyed at the giant before her. As she backed away, she questioned, "Vivian, do goblins have these kinds of puppets?"
"While they’re not common, goblins indeed make them." Vivian broke out in cold sweat and clenched her teeth, "I’ve heard of this thing. It’s a Legion-level war puppet, often used as a war weapon to counter super high level magical beasts. Its offensive and defensive capabilities are comparable to the average Legendary Rank. If used in a battle in large amounts, only a demigod would be able to counter it head on."
"None of that matters right now." Catherine said anxiously, "I just need to know what its weakness is."
"It doesn’t have a weakness." Vivian gloomily replied, "At least none have been found so far. The few puppets that have been destroyed in history were taken down head-on by demigods or a group of legendary rank beings. No one has successfully beaten one by outsmarting it."
"So your previous method doesn’t work?" Catherine grew more anxious. The puppet, impressively large for a goblin creation, was striding purposefully down the tunnel, closing the gap with each step due to its size. Even though its pace was surprisingly slow, the distance between both parties rapidly decreased. As it stood, unless the four of them turned tail and ran, there was no way they’d shake the colossal puppet off.
"It’s simply too big. Unless I can accurately target its joints with temperature oscillation, I can’t recreate the effect I had on the smaller puppets." Vivian increased her pace, her voice coming out slightly breathless, "But every movement it makes will cause a deviation, I can’t manage that."
"In that case, I’ll just test its strength." Catherine gripped her sword and her shield, locking her gaze on the war puppet, "Flower and Grass Sisters, you two should stay with Vivian for now. Try to stay put—there might still be more undead up ahead."
"Defense, Impact." Vivian’s finger materialized into magic that could effectively neutralize a portion of physical impacts. A transparent shield took shape around Catherine, "Be careful, Catherine. If it gets too dangerous, retreat!"
Catherine yelled lightly, activated her Charge of Fearlessness, held her shield in front of her and dragged her sword behind her. Leaving countless afterimages in her wake, she raced towards the giant puppet’s lower leg at a speed that the naked eye could hardly differentiate. The giant puppet’s reaction was not slow, especially considering its size, but its speed paled in comparison to Catherine’s charge. All it could do was to slightly lift up its leg. Catherine closed in and rammed herself into its leg, slashing horizontally at its knee with all her strength in aggression.
The piercing clang of metal echoed throughout the underground pipe, creating a deafening boom. Catherine was sent flying back the way she came and came to a harsh stop against the wall, sliding slowly and painfully to the ground.
"Tsk, tsk, tsk." Catherine shook her dazed head, licked her bloodied lips from biting down too hard, spat out saliva mixed with blood, and managed a wry grin, "Damn, that thing’s tough."
"Are you okay, Catherine?" Vivian ran over to aid Catherine in retreating from the giant puppet, "Do you think we can win?"
"Stop joking." Catherine’s eyes were wide open as she gasped, "It felt like the first time I trained my Charge on a rock. If my body was still like an average human, I would have shattered every bone in my body from just that one hit. After it simply raised its leg, I was flung all the way back here. Even after I hit it as hard as I could, I only managed to leave a scratch on its joint. How can we possibly stand a chance against an opponent like this? Do you have any other brilliant ideas?"
"I’ve got nothing." Vivian spread her hands in defeat, "If we can’t break its defense, then no strategy will work."
"Then we only have one last resort." With a sigh, Catherine took Vivian’s hand and, pushing Vivian and the sisters ahead, shouted loudly, "Run!"
Indeed, the decision Catherine made was the only correct choice. The colossal legion-level war puppet moved slightly faster than a human’s walking speed but was slower than a jog. Choosing to retreat and utilize speed to widen the distance between them and the puppet would not only buy more time to think about tactics, but could also deplete the puppet’s energy. After all, a puppet of such a large size would consume a considerable amount of energy. The charge it could sustain wouldn’t last too long, this tactic was a classic example of trading space for time to pursue victory.
"The problem is, we don’t have much space left." Catherine complained while running: "Don’t forget the everywhere is swarming with the Undead. Annie, is this pathway leading us to our target now?"
"Wow, what a big doll!" Annie popped her head out, and on seeing the abnormal situation, she gasped in surprise before answering: "Yes, it is this one."
"Are there also a lot of undead in front?" Vivian asked, breathing unevenly.
"Yes, a lot." Annie drew a big circle with her hands: "A big, big group is only in the middle. There aren’t any more after this area."
Catherine quickly exchanged a glance with Vivian; they both nodded simultaneously. Catherine gritted her teeth and said: "Then charge forward. Once we pass the undead area, we’ll have more room to maneuver."
"What I worry about is, if we only just made it past the undead area and see our target on the other side waving at us, what then?" Vivian’s large backpack swung with her running, looking quite amusing from behind as only the backpack was visible and not the person. But the actual weight of it was far from amusing. Even though it was set with an array to lessen its weight, it was still a heavy burden: "We should be prepared for this. We’ve caused way too much commotion. If the other party isn’t deaf, they surely will be ready for us."
"Then let’s bring this big fellow behind us to greet them. I don’t believe that seeing what’s behind us, they won’t flee." Catherine said this and turned back to look at the war puppet behind them. Her sudden glimpse gave her a shock, she immediately stopped, turned around, and barely had time to say: "You keep running, I’ll be right there."
Vivian didn’t hesitate and continued run forward, even though she couldn’t help but look back. Behind them, the war puppet had somehow stopped, bending over, its mouth wide open, showcasing an ominous red glow. Catherine held a Falcon Shield in each hand, the pointed end of the shield propped against the metal ground. A golden light emanated from her and the shield, spreading out into a flat surface from the two shields, covering half of the tunnel and forming a solid barricade.
"Tactic, Hold the Ground."
"Tactic, Legion Barrier."
Catherine yelled twice, triggering her knight skills, setting up defensive fortifications in a swift manner right behind her companions to prepare for the impending impact. The red glow in the puppet’s mouth intensified, creating a deafening screech that filled the inside of the tunnel. A white light — almost impossible to look at — trailed behind an energy current, covering a distance of two to three hundred meters in seconds, directly hitting the defensive barrier set up by Catherine.
At the moment of impact, a blinding glow erupted from the collision. What followed was a violent explosion and a deafening blast. The blast sound was amplified multiple times through the reflection off the circular walls. The two maids who were merely ordinary humans thought their eardrums had burst. Catherine, who almost single-handedly withstood the explosion with her skills and aggression, was sent flying again like a kite without a string, and she fell further ahead compared to the three running women, saving her from more effort.
"Element, Frozen Ground Domain." The experienced Vivian wasn’t foolish enough to rush to check on Catherine’s situation, instead, she turned around first, pointing her magic staff at the giant puppet. A hard and smooth ice layer condensed on the ground over a range of dozens of meters around the puppet’s feet.
"Element, Tornado Space." The magic staff fluttered again, releasing the second spell. The air above the ice layer began to flow abnormally, forming an invisible tornado that covered dozens of meters. After doing all this, Vivian turned back and continued running, moving quickly in Catherine’s direction.
"Bastard." Catherine struggled up, dusting off years of dirt that was lifted onto her due to the explosion. She didn’t care about her image and cursed loudly: "I dare him to use an eight-thousand-Tael crystal bomb to blow me up. One is equivalent to four thousand gold coins. With so many ways to attack, why the hell would he use gold coins, or rather, crystals as weapons, the bastard."
"Sis, calm down." Seeing Catherine was still full of vitality after enduring the explosion, Vivian was finally relieved and urged Catherine to run while pulling her: "The crystal bombs of the goblins are made of imitation crystals, they have a shelf life of only three days. The method of imitation is also one of the five unsolved mysteries, so it’s not worth anything. Don’t be bothered about it, let’s run. After the turn ahead, you don’t have to worry about the bombs anymore."
"Even if it’s worthless, it still hurts." Catherine, whether it was due to the explosion or due to feeling upset about the wasting of the crystal, seemed to be in pain. While escaping, she complained under her breath, clearly still bothered by the goblins’ wasteful nature.
