With a "boom," an explosion echoed in the sewers, a sword was stylishly sheathed in the explosion’s light, and at least twenty small combat puppets lay behind. The four had been in the sewers for over three days, during which they constantly crisscrossed the pipes, painstakingly searching for traces of the enemy. As Annie could only sense if the hatred from spirits exists but not the concentration, they could only slowly follow the path the enemy had taken, unable to accurately judge the enemy’s current location. Fortunately, with the help of the maid sisters, they could at least discern which areas had already been searched and which had not yet been visited, thus avoiding going over the same location multiple times. According to Catherine and Vivian’s plan, maintaining this pace of search, even by the most pessimistic estimate, would eventually allow them to find the enemy. Once they found the enemy’s hideout, they would quietly report back to Indulgence and Passion, bring the two of them down for a surprise attack on the enemy, and the adventure team’s mission would be considered a complete success.
However, these three days were not easy. The number of puppets destroyed by Catherine and Vivian totaled no less than four hundred. Now, when the maid sisters saw the hideous puppets, they had gone from initial jitters to indifference. In the end, if circumstances allowed, the sisters even considered munching on snacks while cheering on the two professionals in battle.
Of course, the actual battle was not so easy. The number of puppets they encountered each time varied, the most being up to fifty puppets appearing at once, making the surrounding area filled with the screeching noise of metal friction and chainsaws. The maid sisters had prepared for death in that situation. They knew very well that under the attack of so many puppets, it would be difficult for Catherine and Vivian to defend themselves, let alone ensure their safety.
Fortunately, due to Catherine’s previous admonition, the two didn’t run around in panic during a crisis, but squeezed against the wall together, quietly waiting for the enemy’s attack, ready to put up a desperate struggle. This choice created a rescue opportunity for Vivian. Thus, under Vivian’s Ice Barrier spell, a thick and hard frost wall enveloped the sister maids, sealing them inside the frost barrier. This not only provided them protection but also isolated their life force. As the metal puppets lost their target, they instantly lost interest in the extra chunk of ice that appeared out of nowhere. They turned all their attention to Catherine and Vivian, with over fifty metal puppets swinging their arms with close and mid-range weapons, launching their most ferocious attack against the two adventurers.
The battle was strange, completely unlike the habitual cooperation style of Catherine’s defense and Vivian’s heavy offense. Instead, the roles were completely reversed. Vivian created a shock field within a circular area of one meter radius around them and maintained it at full force, any puppet approaching the field was bounced far away by the pure magic shock, establishing a safe space. Inside the safe area, Catherine spent most of her energy on offense in addition to constantly blocking crossbow arrows with her shield. The one-handed sword always struck at the perfect time, penetrating the puppet’s belly armor, completely destroying the puppet’s control center.
Even if it took two to three strikes to destroy a puppet, dealing with more than fifty puppets nearly exhausted all of Catherine’s Aggression and she almost collapsed on the ground after the battle. Vivian’s task was lighter than Catherine’s, but the consumption was not less, and maintaining the shock field for a long time left Vivian pale and staggering, which could have caused a temporary disorder of her mana and loss of motor skills. Fortunately, both of them held on. There were only five minor injuries on Catherine, and Vivian miraculously remained unharmed, which has to be admitted as a perfect score. As for the maid sisters who were enclosed in the Ice Barrier and almost died of suffocation, it was just a minor accident and did not affect the overall situation.
*Squeak Squeak* A few plump mice scurried past the girls, swiftly turning a corner and disappeared down a branching path. Then, a magical beast the size of a cat chased after the mice, also ignoring the four people on the move, and disappeared down the path.
"I find it quite strange." Catherine looked perplexed at the path where the mice had disappeared, "There are so many small animals and magical beasts in here. What do they eat normally?"
"There are many things to eat." Vivian answered, "These branch pipes are buried deep in the soil, where food is abundant, at least for the mice. Various plant roots, all kinds of insects, all kinds of fungi, can provide ample nutrition for the mice. Other carnivorous magical beasts naturally feed on mice, forming a complete food chain."
"Poor bottom of the food chain." Catherine shrugged, "So, if someone was lost in here, they might be able to survive indefinitely."
"Yes, I think so too." Vivian nodded, "As long as they can run faster than a mouse, are more robust than cleaner puppets, and can withstand the loneliness of a long time without going mad from the environment."
"Shush." Catherine suddenly interrupted the meaningless chatter between the two, using her Aggression-enhanced hearing to discern the sounds around them in the air, "I faintly hear noises coming from ahead."
"It’s normal to hear noises." Vivian said, ignoring it, "Didn’t we hear it yesterday too? They were the cleaner puppets disturbed by other magical beasts. Thankfully, they helped cover our noise."
"Not the same, this is not the sound of a fight, it’s a strange noise." Catherine frowned as she spoke, "Something like the sound of a piece of metal breaking and then moving back and forth, causing that kind of teeth-gritting friction."
"Eh, dear sister, you don’t have to be so descriptive." Vivian rubbed her arms and grinned, "Just thinking about it makes me feel uncomfortable. Should we go and see what it is?"
"There are undead creatures there." Annie suddenly appeared again, pointing down the pipe that everyone was facing, "I can feel it, there are quite a few undeads there, but they’re very far away and spread out."
"Annie, can you feel it again." Catherine asked, "Did our target go there?"
"No, I can’t smell their scent," Annie hesitated for a moment before shaking her head, "But I feel like there’s something special over there... um, it’s too far away; it’s very unclear."
"Something special?" Vivian pondered momentarily before asking Annie, "Is it important to you?"
"I don’t know, I just felt that it’s a bit special," Annie shook her head. "But it’s too far away, can’t make it out clearly."
"Let’s forget it, we won’t go over there for now." Catherine considered for a moment, then abandoned the notion to explore: "Let’s focus on our main task. If it’s really bothering you, we can check it out after we’ve finished the task. With Lina absent, we need not pick a fight with the undead."
"But, Sister Catherine." Annie tugged at Catherine’s arm, "All the routes ahead have undead."
"Huh?!" Catherine and Vivian stared simultaneously, "All of them?"
"Yes, those people took this path before." Annie pointed towards the widest main tunnel. "But there are also undead here, and plenty of them. Other routes might not have their scent, but they too are teeming with undead."
"Such a hassle." Catherine sat down where she stood, her head aching, and waved to the others. "Let’s sit down and rest. We need to figure out how to proceed."
"There’s only one path, no matter what, we have to move forward." Vivian opened her water bottle, gulped down half its contents impatiently and added as she licked her now dry lips: "Since we’ve decided to use this sort of search method, we certainly can’t let any potential place slip by. Otherwise, if we circumnavigate and search elsewhere, and they happen to be hiding here, we’ll never find them in this lifetime."
"But how can they possibly pass through a horde of undead?" Catherine shook her head: "I am more inclined to the idea that they’ve made an attempt to pass through here, but had to retreat and find another way due to the onslaught of the undead. That’s probably why we found traces of their resentment on so many different paths."
"But..." Vivian was about to object, but a subtle rumbling beneath them interrupted her. A continuous thrumming sound echoed along the sewage tunnel. Judging from the sound, it didn’t seem to be too far away.
"What’s that?" Both adventurers jumped up, their faces turning stern as they kept their eyes on the source of the sound. "Sounds like something big."
"The roaring sounds like footsteps." Catherine said with a worried look: "And the vibration too. But how can there be anything in the sewer capable of making such a noise? It couldn’t possibly be a large magical beast, could it?"
"If it’s just a magical beast it would be fine," Vivian said, trembling, "But If it’s a metallic puppet, then we’re doomed. The kind of puppets that can make these kinds of sounds are likely bigger than we could ever imagine."
A mechanical wizard’s gobbledegook squawked over a speaker someway down the tunnel, causing a "beep". The goblin language signal, although incomprehensible, sounded as though it was getting closer to where they were.
"It’s coming towards us," Vivian and Catherine exchanged a glance: "It seems so."
"No choice then, we’ll have to retreat slowly." Catherine took the rear: "Since the surroundings are all crawling with undead, let’s retreat back to the path our target once took. Maybe we can avoid this big guy."
As it turned out, sometimes, no matter how sound an idea can seem, reality loves to play tricks. The slow retreat of the group didn’t seem to deter the creature making the thunderous footsteps. It appeared to have locked onto them, walking without deviation straight towards them down the sewer tunnel.
"It’s here." Catherine, who had retreated nearly a hundred meters, stared unflinchingly at the side tunnel from where the footsteps were coming. A massive figure slowly emerged from it.
