Chapter 326: Chapter 38 Division of Labor and Cooperation_1
"Boom," the ground was shaking violently, as if a massive building had collapsed, echoing throughout the sewers’ inner space. And it wasn’t just once, but twice, with the second being more intense than the first.
"Ouch, that must really hurt." Vivian grimaced but didn’t stop running.
"What did you do?" Catherine asked while running and clutching her ribs. The recent explosions hadn’t caused her significant harm, but the shock waves had cracked her ribs. Although her professional’s constitution would ensure this wouldn’t hamper her activities or combat, it was still uncomfortable. But the current circumstances didn’t allow Catherine to tend to her wound properly, and she was forced to endure the pain.
"Seeing how passionately it was chasing us, I gave it a little gift," calculated Vivian, grinning mischievously in mid-run and grinding her teeth. "I just layered the ground with ice and added a bit of spiral force. Whether it slips due to its weight or not is not my problem."
"But why were there two booms?" Catherine asked, "The second one was obviously more terrifying than the first."
"Uh, the ice was sloping," Vivian nonchalantly answered, her gaze drifting upwards. "I hope it fell and died."
"Not likely," Catherine, listening attentively, shook her head. "It’s pursuing us again, this time by following the sewer. Uh, do you think it can climb out?"
"Although I’d love it if it couldn’t climb out, war puppets are known to excel at climbing." Vevey sighed regretfully. "We’d better pick up the pace. Element, Power of Wind."
With a wave of Vivian’s magic staff, an imperceptible breeze blew across the four bodies. The maid sisters, who had never felt Vivian’s magic amplification, suddenly felt much lighter. Their bodies shot forward when they instinctively used their normal strength when running. Catherine, anticipating this reaction, quickly pulled them back, prevented the sisters from collapsing.
"Adjust your strength, and you’ll adapt quickly. Run as if you have discarded the weight you were carrying," Catherine advised. "This will make running much easier, and you will instantly love this feeling. The only drawback is that you will feel even heavier once the effect wears out, which might disappoint you."
"Thank you for not abandoning us in such times," the Pansy smiled gratefully and with slight confusion. Growing up in the City of Innocence, the sisters couldn’t understand this kind of help without a reason. In their eyes, it was normal for everyone to only take responsibility for their own safety in such situations, even if someone had spare energy, they should keep it to deal with possible other crises instead of helping two burdens with almost zero fighting power.
"Don’t think too much; you are very useful." Catherine seemed to guess what the sisters were thinking and smiled kindly. "You still remember the path we took, right? You will lead the way out."
The maid sisters didn’t say anything else. They knew very well that with the immediate map and existing paper map, and Vivian’s magical marks set when they descended and Annie, the sensor, the chance of these two adventurers getting lost wasn’t high. Catherine’s words were nothing more than a comforting gesture to make them feel better. Knowing this, the sisters could do nothing else but do their best to cooperate and not cause additional trouble for the adventurers. It seemed like the best way to repay them.
"Whoosh," The sound of air being torn apart echoed again. Not even allowing Catherine to think, during the run she turned her body and raised her shield, her shoulder pressed tightly against the back of the shield. She didn’t have time to use her stronghold skill to enhance her defense and stability; the only thing she managed to do was to open the Legion Barrier to deal with the shock of the second explosion. Amid the light and sound of the explosion, Catherine was thrown again, flying even further than the last time - over forty meters before crashing heavily to the ground. She barely started to recover when Vivian and the others were about to run past her.
"Damn it, another four thousand gold coins," Catherine lamented despairingly, ignoring Vivian’s previous information about the crystal not being valuable. The puppet’s attack seemed equivalent to gold coins to her. Rubbing her shoulder, she pursued the three figures ahead, "Vivian, tell me, how many more gold coins does it have?"
"Sorry, it has no gold coins," Vivian glanced at Catherine sideways. "If you’re talking about the Crystal Bombs, the record shows that the most it can carry is eight pieces. But in most cases, the standard amount is only four."
"So you mean I have to fly at least two more times?" Catherine smiled bitterly, extending her hand towards Vivian. "Hand me an Advanced Healing Potion for ingestion. The impacts are stronger than I imagined. I would probably have fractured some bones if I had resisted all four. A little treatment now should make it less miserable."
Vivian was left stunned. While the Advanced Healing Potion was indeed very effective, the price was immensely steep. The cost of the mere ingredients was eight hundred to a thousand gold coins. The finished product often sold in the market for around two thousand gold coins, and supply always fell short of demand. For the potion that Catherine saw as a high-end luxury, forcing her to drink it was practically more painful than killing her. But now, Catherine willingly volunteered to use it. It was clear that, despite not showing signs of anxiety, Catherine was not all too optimistic about the situation. Vivian sighed and pulled out the bright red potion and handed it over, whispering, "I’ll take the lead next time."
"Don’t be silly. If we run into the Undead, we’ll need you lead the way." Although it hurt her to see it go, and her eyes were red with regret, Catherine drank the potion worth thousands of gold coins in one gulp and reluctantly stuffed the empty vial into her pocket, "I’ll keep this as a souvenir, it has sentimental value."
"Sisters, be careful," Annie suddenly peeked out, "The undead ahead might have sensed you, they’re moving this way."
"So soon?" Catherine turned to look at the giant puppet turning the corner three hundred meters away. Through gritted teeth, she said, "Vivian, you lead, I’ll follow. Let’s cross over as fast as we can."
"Understood," Vivian abruptly halted mid-run, her magic staff struck the ground, causing innumerable points of light to converge at the tip of the staff. More and more lights gathered, each one was a different color. They quickly formed a colorful magic orb that was constantly changing colors, which hovered in mid-air at the end of the staff. Vivian took a deep breath, casually grabbed the magic orb, caught up with the other three, and said in between breaths, "Flower and Grass Sisters, try to keep your pace up. I’ll do my best to protect you. But if the Undead are too numerous, I can’t promise much, so watch out for yourselves. Yet, as always..."
"We won’t leave your sides." The Mimosa volunteered to finish the sentence, "Rest assured, we will not be a burden on you."
"Vivian, aren’t people supposed to get upset if you casually name them?" Despite the fact that the situation was urgent, Catherine managed to find humor, teasing, "Yet you’ve adopted the same habit."
"Hey, elder sister, I think you’re becoming more and more like Pannis," Vivian instantly countered, "Half a year ago, you definitely weren’t joking around to lighten the mood in circumstances like these."
"Hmm, because I found it really works," Catherine admitted, somewhat embarrassed, "One should learn good things and use them for oneself."
"And what about the bad things?" Vivian asked.
"Of course, destroy them," Catherine swung the shield in her hand as if she was killing off her routine chores, "No mercy given."
"Hahaha..." The clear laughter of the two girls earned the admiration of the maid sisters. The two sisters following along knew all too well that the situation ahead was anything but gratifying. The enormous, ferocious metal puppet behind them was like the Grim Reaper closing in. If it got too close, it could easily crush and stomp every last one of them. As for the Undead ahead that they hadn’t seen yet, or rather the two sisters had never witnessed the Undead before, but from various legends, those ghastly skeletons, the ethereal Wraiths, the horrifying Death Knights, each of them was bone-chilling. Trapped between two threats, had it not been for the adventurer pair who remained calm and laughed amidst the crisis, the two maids would have suffered a breakdown.
"Here they come, watch me." Vivian yelled loudly. The sewage pipe was full of turns and many of which blocked the view, but these turns could not block the sound. Although they couldn’t see, everyone had already heard the bone-rattling sounds and the unsettling noise of collision, accompanied by the whispering of the souls which was as if they were murmuring closely to their ears. These were the tell-tale signs of an approaching horde of skeletons and Wraiths.
"I just can’t figure out how there could be so many skeletons here," Even though Catherine was focusing entirely on the metal puppet behind her, entrusting the task of attacking upfront wholly to Vivian, she could not resist asking after hearing the noises, "A skeleton would only appear if there was a massive number of carcasses, yet this is a sewer, not a cemetery. Where did all these bones come from? And also, how could so many bones still exist if this place has been sealed for ten thousand years? It simply defies common sense."
"Even if you ask me, there’s no way I could answer that, sister." Vivian replied helplessly, "But we may soon find out. Elemental, Triple Explosion Flame Spell."
A huge fireball with a diameter of over half a meter was formed at the top of the magic staff. Unlike the flame explosions she casually tossed around while playing with Pannis or Lina, the internal flame of this fireball had turned a light blue color due to high temperature condensation. Yet, no matter how close it got, one couldn’t feel any heat from it, it was clear that all the temperature and power were contained within the fireball.
She swung her magic staff and the enormous fireball rolled forward down the sewer. At the end of her line of sight, a large number of stark white skeletons dashed out of another bend, coming into direct contact with her fireball. (Continued.
