Chapter 264: Chapter 30: Honesty_1

"Freya, we’re here." Catherine knocked on the carriage door: "You haven’t had dinner yet, have you? We brought some for you."

"I figured you guys would be coming soon, I’ve been waiting for a while." Freya answered in her lovely voice: "I had dinner already. After all, I’m getting married, I need to maintain a regular schedule. I can’t be as irregular as I used to be."

"You’re talking as if it were true." Lina smirked, "The all-night chats you and Vivian used to have, I and elder sister remember them quite clearly."

"That was a discussion of knowledge." Both Vivian and Freya said in unison: "A sacred method of study, should not be misrepresented if you don’t understand."

"Oh, discussing knowledge, huh." Lina nodded her head, speaking earnestly: "I just learned today that discussing knowledge also includes shooting fireballs and Crystal Energy guns at each other in a room."

"That was just an accident, haha." Vivian scratched at her soft hat and laughed dryly for a moment, quickly faded away her smile, switching on a serious look: "Let’s set aside these unimportant things, this time we’re here to discuss serious matters."

"You’re finally prepared to tell me the truth?" Freya said quietly: "What exactly happened? Why have I encountered so much on my wedding journey? What do you know?"

"Don’t worry, we’ll tell you everything we know." Catherine comforted Freya: "Actually, not long ago, the chairman received a threatening letter..."

"Is that all?" Freya was unsatisfied with Catherine’s recounting of the previous happenings: "Why didn’t you or Father tell me earlier? Why have you been hiding it from me?"

"We did it for your sake." Lina explained: "Right now is your happiest moment, we didn’t want you to be affected. We didn’t want you to be worried or heartbroken."

"Yes, in your eyes, I’ve always been a frail flower sheltered in a greenhouse." Freya sighed sadly: "Innocent, fragile, sensitive, easily broken, never having faced defeat, unaware of the ways of the world, just allowing the storm..."

"Ahem." Vivian coughed, covering her mouth, this time she didn’t wave her magic staff— very ladylike.

"Alright, alright, consider me forgiving you for not telling me this." Freya said normally: "But now do we know who is trying to stop my wedding?"

"Unknown." Catherine answered: "We’ve discussed this several times over, still no answer."

"Who would do such a thing?" Freya spoke, puzzled: "I am just a small woman pursuing happiness. I never wanted to harm anyone, just wanted to seize the hard-won love in front of me. Why would anyone be so cruel as to shatter a young girl’s smallest dream, why..."

"Bang." Vivian could no longer maintain her decorum and tolerance: "Let’s focus on the matter at hand. And what are you doing? Your voice sounds so muffled."

"Oh, I’m eating." said Freya: "I’m eating a cookie."

"Didn’t you just have dinner?" Lina asked curiously: "Why are you eating a cookie again? And doesn’t this all make you upset? Someone is trying to ruin your wedding, if it were in the past, you would’ve already soaked your handkerchief in tears."

"I’m upset, but after separating from you, I developed a habit." Freya paused for a moment, then spoke softly: "Whenever I feel sad, I’ll eat something to divert my attention. I learned this from a book. At first, I didn’t believe it, but after trying it a few times, I found it quite effective, so I formed a habit. Since then, I cry less and am not as melancholy as before."

"This method... haha, seems not so reliable." Lina didn’t know what face to pull, merely showing a small smile: "But as long as you’re happy, that’s what matters. Continue, I won’t interrupt you."

"Mm, alright." Freya said: "I remembered, you asked yesterday if my Mr. Kara Haines agreed to our love. You weren’t suspecting him to be the mastermind, were you?"

"We did suspect him before." Catherine replied: "But after these two days of observation, we’ve basically ruled it out. As for the reasons we ruled him out, we’ve summarized three points."

"Indeed, it won’t be him." After hearing Catherine’s three reasons, Freya said: "But I can’t think of anyone else. After all, not many people knew about this, and even fewer could’ve pulled it off."

"Could it really have been one of your admirers?" Lina asked: "After all, you’re so beautiful, your admirers could form half an army. It’s not surprising that one or two could do such a thing."

"Stop kidding." Freya said shyly, "I’m not pretty at all, and I certainly don’t exaggerate like half an army. Most importantly, they don’t know I’m getting married. Very few people know about it. However, it’s possible that someone may have inadvertently let it slip, since it’s not such a highly confidential matter."

"Alright, let’s leave the subject. It’s pointless to discuss further." Catherine said, "No matter who the enemy is, or how cunning they are, we can totally defeat them as we have been doing these past few days. Soon enough, they will run out of luck and expose their vulnerabilities. Do we all have confidence in that?"

"Oh, oh, oh!" The three girls cheered with their arms raised as if they were back in their old days, yelling out their challenge from both sides of the carriage, "Defeat them, oh oh oh."

Pannis scratched his head, yawned, and lazily changed into a more comfortable position, completely ignoring the ladies who were in a strange state of excitement.

The next while was girl time. The four women, having eliminated their small disagreements, huddled together, chattering away, each talking about their experiences after separation. They talked animatedly, occasionally laughing at Pannis’ expense. Pannis found himself unable to interject. Of course, he didn’t particularly desire to. A wise man always knows when to hold his tongue, and clearly, this was one of those times. Evidently, Pannis was such a man, so he tactfully pretended to be non-existent, curling up on his seat and started to drift in and out of sleep.

It wasn’t until three hours later that the ladies decided to call it a night. The hour was late, and they considerately designated Pannis to take the first night shift. Initially, they had no plans to take turns watching over the night when they set off, but in light of the recent events of the past two days, they decided to be cautious and proceeded as if they were on a wilderness adventure.

Having the first watch was always the easiest. After finishing the shift, one could get a good night’s sleep. Secondly, there was no need to struggle with sleepiness after being woken up. As everyone was acquainted with each other, there was no need to argue over such a trivial matter. Pannis gladly accepted the ladies’ kindness.

Soon, the camp gradually quieted down. After a day of fighting, the guards fell into a deep sleep as soon as they laid down. Although the members of the wedding party had not participated in the battle, they were tired from hours of worry and fear and soon fell asleep as well. Only three guards were left to watch over the camp, preventing any ambushes on the team.

Pannis was also on watch, lounging leisurely on top of Freya’s luxurious carriage, chewing on a bamboo stick. He had a comfortable and relaxed demeanor, seemingly unaffected by worldly concerns.

"Mr. Pannis, Mr. Pannis." Freya’s muffled voice came from below, "Are you still there?"

"No, I’m long gone." Pannis answered offhandedly as he chewed on his bamboo stick, "I had already left."

"Ha, Mr. Pannis, you really are like they said." Freya laughed, "I can’t sleep. I guess I’m still bothered by this."

"As long as you don’t speak in that odd way, it’s fine." Pannis spat out his bamboo stick and sat up, "If you keep talking like that, I would indeed be gone."

"Actually, I know not everyone likes it when I talk that way." Freya’s voice carried a touch of a smile, "But sometimes it just comes out unconsciously."

"Why is that?" Pannis asked curiously, "It doesn’t seem normal, does it?"

"My mother passed away when I was young, and my father was quite busy. I was immature then, I always felt like I was the most pitiful child in the world and got carried away with self-pity. Adding to that, I was naturally emotional, so I often imagined myself as a character from one of those third-rate tragic stories. I gradually started speaking in their style, but couldn’t shake off the habit once it formed." Freya was quite open about her speaking habit, "Actually, I also speak like that when I’m emotionally unstable, well, I suppose I’m not exactly stable most of the time."

"Uh, you’ve said what I wanted to." Pannis laughed awkwardly, "And, you’re sure you only act like that? Just a bit more often?."

"Ha-ha, sometimes you sound just like Lina and Vivian, Mr. Pannis. You always leave people speechless." Freya laughed, "But I’m glad. It seems like Mr. Pannis doesn’t dislike me as much now."

"Huh, I never disliked you." Pannis emphatically denied, "I was just afraid of your manner of speaking."

"It’s not that simple." Freya pressed on, "I could tell, and so could the three of them. It’s plain to see that you were dissatisfied with me because of the previous gap between me and them. Now that the gap is closed, the dislike and hostility have naturally disappeared."

"How could that be, ha ha ha ha, it’s not like that at all." Pannis looked up to the sky, "Wow, the weather is really nice tonight."

"Hee-hee, though you’ve known each other for a short time, you seem to have deep feelings for each other." Freya said enviously, "I really envy your relationship. I just can’t help but feel aversion towards men."

"Ahem, I have to remind you of one thing." Pannis said solemnly, "The person you’re talking to right now is a bona fide man. Believe me, I’m telling the truth." (To be continued.
