Chapter 263: Chapter 29 Second Night_1

The location here was about three kilometers away from the previous battlefield, near a small creek. After the battle was over, everyone had endured another three kilometers in the twilight to avoid the smell of corpses and blood, preventing scavenger-like magical beasts attracted by the corpses from causing trouble in the newly established campsite.

Everyone washed off the blood and white insect fluids that had splattered on the surfaces of each horse carriage by the creek, as well as the filth on their bodies. These young team members, for the first time experiencing such a bloody and protracted battle, finally felt somewhat comfortable in their stomachs and hearts. However, it was merely a little better.

Nevertheless, the next problem quickly arose. The chefs in charge of dinner were ordinary people who hadn’t participated in today’s fight, so they had safely hidden in the carriage. After the battle, a few chefs, with good intentions, decided to make something delicious for the young fighters, intending to replenish their strength. Thus, they decided to cook a pot of thick meat soup, accompanied by a fragrant, thick meat sauce and soft white bread. For those living in the wilderness, such a delicious meal was a dream come true.

So, when dinner began, and the team members saw chunks of light-colored meat rumbling in the milky-white meat soup, and the dark red meat sauce made from tomatoes was spread on the golden-baked bread, most of them vomited out of sheer happiness. Clearly, the afternoon’s spraying of insect fluids, insect meat, and beast’s blood had caused them a bit of discomfort. However, it was believed they would soon overcome these problems. Yes, they would do so very soon.

"Yes, I believe they can." Pannis said sternly. It was dinner time, and today everyone was camped together. The city guards and the four members of the adventure team sat together. Pannis scooped up a spoonful of meat sauce and artistically outlined a vivid shape on a chunk of bread, then casually passed it to the only remaining team member who had strong nerves and hadn’t vomited yet because of dinner. The shape looked very much like masses of meat sauce piled on top of each other to form gorges, and it looked like a complete brain soaked in fresh blood. In between the gorges, there was also a white fat that was slightly solidified due to the cold, making the brain look even more realistic. Consequently, the last survivor also ran to a corner, touched, vomiting. When Ayrland went to comfort and care for the team members who were vomiting, only the adventure team was left at the dining place, monopolizing a pot of meat soup and a jar of meat sauce.

"You’re really getting more and more disgusting." Catching the bread thrown by the last survivor who ran away, Catherine looked at the pattern on it, chuckled lightly, added a skull pattern on the outer layer of the brain with her small spoon, and wrote the name Pannis next to it using a bit of the soup. Then she was delighted to handed it to Lina beside her.

Lina took the bread, looked down at the bread, then looked up at Pannis, looked down at the bread again, then looked up at Pannis, finally nodded pensively. Then she bit down hard, her biting strength was so fierce that it made Pannis’s eye corners twitch.

"I’m just rewarding them." Pannis, frightened, touched his skull, confirming that Lina hadn’t bitten it off. He then firmly denied Catherine’s accusations, "I suggested the set of dinner to the chefs out of good intentions, it was indeed a reward for everyone, so why call it disgusting? Look at how happy you are eating, aren’t you?"

"We’re just numb, it doesn’t mean we like this feeling." Catherine stared at Pannis angrily, embracing Vivian and wiping off the meat sauce smeared all over her face. During this time, Vivian didn’t respond at all but kept stuffing bread into her mouth mechanically, which is probably why she got it all over her face, "Such a feast, placed in a brilliantly-lit, floral and musical restaurant, and eaten in a dark, damp, and stench-filled dungeon, apart from you, who is a perv▪ert, who would like to eat in the latter environment?"

"I’m not a perv▪ert." Pannis drank his soup with satisfaction, and said earnestly, "I’m just honing their endurance, getting them used to these environments as early as possible will help them in the future, see, I am a good person. Hahaha."

"Laughing like an idiot." Lina gave Pannis a white eye: "Let’s talk about the main point now, how do we explain to Freya later?"

Speaking of Freya, I haven’t asked you guys yet." Pannis asked curiously, "What’s going on between you guys? Why did the atmosphere suddenly change?"

"I recall telling you before that when we were together back then, we had a good relationship." Catherine explained, "We were like a family at that time, playing, causing a ruckus, fighting and bleeding together, we were the closest comrades. But then she suddenly left. When we saw her again yesterday morning she had changed, acting like a good girl, keeping a distance from us in her words and deeds. We can understand that, after all, she’s getting married and may be returning to a quiet and boring domestic life, and she can’t be like before, so we just cooperate with her, keeping a safe distance when communicating with her. Who would’ve thought that she suddenly went back to her old ways, and gave us the feeling that the old Freya was back. We were naturally happy."

"No wonder." Pannis suddenly realized, "No wonder I thought she was being fake and pretentious in her attitude towards you guys. So that’s why."

"So you didn’t like her before?" Catherine glanced at Pannis with a smile that wasn’t necessarily a smile, "She has complained to me in secret, saying that you always behave like you dislike her very much. She felt strange, she had no idea what she did to offend you. So, it’s because of us?"

"Nonsense!" Pannis vehemently denied, "I just thought her talking was too scary, and didn’t Lina say it before? She dislikes men getting close. I was just creating opportunities for myself, hahaha."

"Keep making things up." Catherine completely disregarded Pannis’ flustered lie, then said to Lina, "I think it might be better to tell her the actual situation. Although her heart is sensitive and fragile, she has the right to know the truth at this point. Plus, as long as we don’t tell her we suspect her future father-in-law is the mastermind, it might not necessarily hurt her."

"But don’t forget we’ve already agreed to Master Odin to conceal the truth from Freya," Lina objected, "Wouldn’t it be inappropriate to disclose to her now?"

"The situation has changed; she has practically unravelled everything herself." Catherine retorted, "When we made the agreement, we never anticipated such frequent and blatant actions from them. Therefore, given the change in circumstances, we reserve the right to modify our stance. Besides, the Guild Master was the first to breach the rules by withholding information from us. He violated the agreement first, we have no obligation to abide by it."

"Hmm, So, wouldn’t that upset Odin?" Lina questioned, "After all, he is the Guild Master."

"What do you think matters more to a man like Odin who dotes on his daughter?" Pannis interjected, "Upsetting him or his daughter; which one would have a greater impact?"

"Alright, you have a solid point." Lina nodded, "I have no objections. I agree with telling her."

"But before we divulge anything, let’s get our perspective aligned." Catherine said in a low voice, "Do you truly believe that the schemer behind all this is the opposing Guild Master, Kara?"

"Sis, it seems you also sense something is off." Lina bit her lip lightly, her fingers unconsciously twirling her silver hair, a habitual gesture of hers when deep in thought, "It doesn’t quite add up."

"What’s your reason?" Catherine pressed, "Why do you think so? Let’s see if we’re on the same page."

"Although from the two attacks, the roles our adversaries took on were all rare ones, there might be other rare roles to follow. Indeed, Kara is the most likely person to quietly mobilize these roles, thus making him a strong suspect." Lina confessed, "But as Freya said, if Kara didn’t agree, there was no need to bring Wesker with him to propose. This point is contradictory."

"Anything else?" Catherine asked with a frown, "Any other reason?"

"Also, Kara’s identity." Lina noted, "Kara’s identity, like Odin’s, restricts him from casually ordering attacks on targets because it might escalate the problem. Even if he secretly hires others to attack us like Odin, don’t forget they are mercenaries. All the teams are massive, with the smallest still consisting of hundreds of people. It is hard for them to keep a strict secret. And no large number of troops have ambushed us so far. Looking at our current situation, those attacking us seem to be more of scattered elites, not the members of a established mercenary group, so it doesn’t seem like the act of a Guild Master of the mercenaries."

"There’s another major point of doubt." Pannis spoke in a hushed voice, "Is this attack, in its current form, really representative of the orchestrations of a demigod?"

"What do you mean?" Catherine paused, asking for clarification.

"You’ve underestimated the vision of a demigod." Pannis scoffed, his tone laden with an inexplicable smirk, "A demigod with a functioning brain wouldn’t do something like this, sending seemingly ’potentially successful’ people to perform critical tasks. If this was genuinely a scheme of a demigod, we would be facing Legendary Ranks that could crush all of us, maybe even two at a time to ensure an ’absolute’ success. The situation we’re facing right now is more akin to a child’s play, and nowhere near a regular demigod’s scheming."

"Is that so?" Catherine and Lina bowed their heads in deep thought. After a moment, Catherine spoke, "We haven’t met any demigods other than the Guild Master and Master Antuin, so we can’t judge. But from what I sense, you’re probably right. If that is the case, then the planner must be someone else. But who could it be?"

"Maybe, I have a vague guess." Pannis gave a bitter smile, "But there is no evidence for now. I will tell you when I have something solid."

"Alright then, let’s go and divulge." Catherine put down the empty bowl in her hand and stood up, "Just remember to keep our story straight, we don’t know who the mastermind behind all this is."(To be continued.
