Chapter 265: Chapter 31 - Peculiar Views on Love_1
"Ah? Really?" The sound of Freya’s surprise conjured up an image of her wide-eyed and covering her small mouth in shock in Pannis’s head. But he couldn’t suppress his laughter: "Haha, just kidding, Mr. Pannis, you’re actually the exception."
"Exception?" Pannis asked in confusion: "Why am I an exception?"
"Because, Mr Pannis, you’re the first man who dislikes me, hehe." Freya said, trying to suppress her laughter: "I’m quite curious about you."
"Hey, don’t joke like that." Pannis said awkwardly: "My mind can wander. Besides, you’re about to get married, married ladies are not within my defense range, you can’t insult my morals!"
"I’ve heard from Catherine about Mr. Pannis’s defense range and morals, hahaha." Feeling Pannis’s sudden speechlessness, Freya hadn’t felt this happy for a long time, even when Wesker proposed marriage it had only brought her mild joy, but now she’s found the heartfelt happiness she used to feel when joking with friends: "Thank you Mr. Pannis, for making me laugh so much, haha."
"Hey, enough with the laughter already." Pannis rested his chin on his hand, his fingers tapping his knee out of boredom: "You’re laughing so much you won’t be able to sleep, was it necessary to laugh that uproariously?"
"I’m really sorry, hehe." Freya, holding back her laughter, said: "It’s just that I haven’t had such a hearty laugh for a long time, I just couldn’t stand it."
"Why don’t you laugh more?" Pannis seemed to recall the past, the laughter in his eyes gradually disappearing, but his face squeezed out a perfect smile.
"Because I’m naturally emotional, and I always feel melancholic." Freya said softly: "Also, my father always told me that if I wanted to pursue love, I needed to control my emotions and be a gentle and thoughtful lady. Hence, I never allowed myself to laugh so hard. However, my correspondence with Wesker has made me understand that when you love someone, you have to show your most realistic side to him, whether good or bad, it should be sincerest. After all, we will hold hands in the future, walk together on our journey..."
"Ahem, I think you’ve misunderstood something." Pannis immediately interrupted Freya, not allowing her to continue: "Actually, Odin is not wrong, even when facing your lover, sometimes you have to put on a disguise. No, it can’t be called a disguise, it’s making changes, it’s changing your shortcomings and weaknesses for your loved one."
"Really? But Wesker said, to love a person is to accept her in her entirety, both her flaws and her virtues." Freya said in distress: "It’s different from what you’ve stated."
"Well, you’re also not wrong, but haven’t you thought that it’s not fair?" Pannis sighed: "Love should be mutual, he loves you, you love him, this is love. So, because he loves you, he will accept you entirely, even if he doesn’t like the way you speak, he will accept it."
"He does not dislike it." Freya said discontentedly: "He said he liked me this way, melancholic and sensitive."
"Just for example, it’s only an example." Pannis explained: "Let’s assume he doesn’t like the way you speak."
"Alright, so for argument’s sake, then what?" Freya asked: "He doesn’t like it, but he will accept my flaws."
"But what about you?" Pannis retorted: "Do you love him?"
"Of course." Freya replied without hesitation: "How could I want to marry him if I didn’t love him?"
"So haven’t you ever thought that because you love him, you should also accept him?" Pannis asked: "You should accept his dislike for the way you speak, and strive to change for him, just like he changes for you. This is the reciprocity of love, not a one-way demand for the other to change or to always take advantage of him, don’t you agree?"
"Umm, this..." Freya was suddenly speechless, completely unable to refute Pannis’s words: "I need to think, I have to think. Could I have been wrong? Or did I really do something wrong?"
"Maybe yes, maybe not, you think about it slowly." Pannis jumped down from the carriage roof: "I’m hungry again, I’m going to find something to eat."
"I also want some, bring some back for me." Although Freya was deep in her thoughts, she remembered to respond.
"Didn’t you just eat a cookie?" Pannis was startled: "How are you still hungry?"
"My mind is a mess, I need a distraction." Freya’s voice grew softer as she fell into deep thought.

The faint light of early winter shone through the camp, barely visible. The flames that had been burning brightly last night had now faded to warm ashes, emitting sagging smoke. On the window of the Transparent Crystal carriage, the frost formed into unique patterns. Under the carriage roof, a few drops of water that hadn’t dripped had already solidified into ice.
Catherine lifted the tent flap and took a deep breath. The piercing cold instantly filled her chest, dispelling any remnants of sleepiness. Stepping out of the tent, she saw that some members had already gotten up and were busily moving about the camp, tidying the items used in camping. By the only remaining campfire, a few chubby cooks were preparing breakfast. The cold, hard bread was being toasted by the fire, gradually turning golden and emitting an appetizing aroma. A large pot was suspended over the fire, and though what was inside was not visible, the oatmeal’s sweet aroma drifting in with the cold air made the deliciousness of breakfast palpable.
Then, Catherine saw Pannis.
Pannis was frustratingly squatting not far from the campfire, focusing on the cookware on the fire and the bread beside it. The look in his eyes was as loving as someone staring at a lover’s face, unable to bear to look away for even a second.
"What a lovely morning." Catherine covered her eyes in despair, pretending not to recognize Pannis as she passed by him to wash up, even though she saw Pannis pointing at the bread and waving at her.
"You are such a disgrace, Pannis." A thick silver tome landed flat on Pannis’s head. Lina giggled, her face full of charm, as she casually strutted over to Pannis: "I feel like big sister is going to have another heart-to-heart talk with you."
"But it smells so good." Pannis, who was knowingly causing trouble, was quite destructive. At that point, he took several deep breaths, looking totally entranced: "The more I smell, the hungrier I get. Eh? Are you... Princess Helen today? Haha, aren’t you afraid that Catherine will scold you?"
"You’re right, and here’s your reward." Lina flicked her loose silver hair and smacked the magical tome on Pannis’s head again: "Catherine just doesn’t like her in person, so it’s fine like this."
"Lina, you’re up? You must be tired from keeping watch all night." Catherine, who had just returned from washing up, looked at Lina and hesitated for a moment before saying nothing: "Go wake Vivian up. I have a feeling today won’t be very peaceful."
"And you, Pannis." As soon as Lina turned around, Catherine grabbed Pannis, shaking him and whispering angrily: "Can’t you stop embarrassing us? Look, the chefs are almost convulsing from holding back their laughter. Even if you don’t care about our dignity, at least think about their health. Cooking for dozens of people along the way is already tough enough, why do you insist on tormenting them, why!"
"Haha, you two really get along well." Captain Ayrland approached from across the camp, already noticing their peaceful interaction from afar: "It’s the first time I’ve seen Miss Catherine like this."
Catherine stiffened up, slowly releasing Pannis’s collar, forcing out a strange smile and mechanically turning around: "Haha, Captain Ayrland, haha, you’re up already, haha."
With the loss of Catherine’s support, Pannis squatted down weakly, his head still spinning from her shaking: "I see, so many, so many, so many stars, hehe."
"Get up, you." Catherine stamped her foot on Pannis in resentment: "Stop messing around."
"At your command, my valkyrie." Others didn’t notice, Pannis blurted out an answer that surprised even himself, but quickly recuperated, standing next to Catherine and greeting Ayrland as if the person seeing stars wasn’t him: "Good morning, captain, last night was quite peaceful, no dangers at all."
"Actually, there’s a slight situation." Ayrland looked around to make sure no one was nearby, then lowered his voice: "We appear to be missing a person?"
"Huh?" Pannis and Catherine both paused: "Strange, there were no attacks last night."
"He must have left on his own, look at this, it’s for you." Ayrland took out a letter and handed it to Catherine, explaining: "The missing person is a female makeup artist from the wedding party. She hardly ever left the carriage, meaning she has never shown her face to us. If it hadn’t been for the person who found this letter, I wouldn’t have known we were missing someone."
"What’s her background?" Catherine took the envelope and looked at the words ’To Catherine, the Captain’ on it: "How did she enter the team?"
"She is a quite famous makeup artist from the Holy City, she’s done makeup for many performances." Ayrland said: "She joined the team in a completely normal way, she was recruited when the city lord was calling for a wedding party during another event. There’s nothing suspicious."
"It doesn’t matter." Pannis said: "Even if there were suspicions, it doesn’t matter now. what does the letter say?"
"Your table-flipping antics scared her off." Catherine laughed and handed the letter over: "Take a look, it’s probably the only good news we’ve gotten."
"Hmm, I see." Pannis unfolded the letter: "A smart girl."
The letter was simple, with only one line of text: I’m leaving of my own accord, just for personal reasons.
"At least we can relax a bit now, we don’t have to worry about someone planning a death all day." Pannis sighed in relief: "It’s good news."
"What if she’s trying to make us let our guard down?" Ayrland, who wasn’t familiar with the rules of mercenaries and adventurers, asked.
"That’s not going to happen." Catherine explained: "Under the current circumstances, we’re not in a war to the death situation, it’s more like a common competition. But if she declares herself out and then reneges, whatever retaliation we make against her will be supported by everyone. So don’t worry, captain, she wouldn’t do something so stupid."
