Over the rapidly flowing river, the wind is often much stronger than on land. After a crudely made kite ascends into the sky under the push of wind-attribute magic, it is driven by the powerful wind of the river. No longer needing the power of magic, it automatically drifts towards higher and farther places. The other end of the kite string is firmly tied to a huge rock on the riverbank. The rock weighs several thousand kilograms, enough to resist the pull of the kite.
After not too long, the 1,500-meter-long kite string is fully extended. The rope stretches diagonally above the river, and the huge kite in the sky becomes a small pattern. As for the two people on the kite, they have become two tiny dots, hard to see with the naked eye. Catherine flicked the string connecting the kite, the string made a thudding sound like a plucked bowstring, obviously already stretched to its limit.
"It’s almost time to light the fire." Catherine gazed at the kite in the sky and waved to the person behind her. Dora, who was holding a torch, lit the prepared pile of firewood. The pile of firewood, mixed with fresh branches and leaves, heated up quickly under the flames. A lot of thick grey smoke arose from the top of the pile, rose vertically until it met with the wind, and was blown northwest by the river wind.
"Done." Catherine gave the sky one last worried glance before decisively sitting down next to the Magic Array: "The rest is up to them, we just need to wait."
"Senior sister, there might be a problem." Thanks to Dora’s excellent vision thanks to her Gold Rank physique, she seemed to have noticed something. She pointed at the kite in the sky and said, "I hope I’m wrong, you look."
"Flying magical beasts?" Catherine immediately understood the implications in Dora’s words. Even though she asked the question, she didn’t actually wait for Dora’s answer, but instead followed Dora’s gaze. Sure enough, in the direction she looked, several small black dots appeared in the distant sky, rapidly flying towards Pannis and Vivian in the air. Catherine shook her head: "I didn’t prepare binoculars, so I can’t see clearly, but I believe they can handle it."
"Eh?" Dora was shocked as she looked at Catherine, "Sister, aren’t you worried?"
Catherine just smiled faintly, not answering. In her heart, she was already with the two people in the sky.
The wind is very strong hundreds to thousands of meters above ground. The wind came at an angle, blowing directly into Vivian’s face. She sat on a frame specially constructed for her under the kite, and although she wasn’t blown off the kite, the force of the strong wind made it hard for her to breathe. She could only reluctantly conjure a windproof barrier near her body using magic, alleviating some of the difficulty. After solving her breathing problem, she had the energy to turn her head toward Pannis and found that he was sitting cleverly on the frame belonging to him, twisting his head to the side so that the wind could only hit the back of his head, not directly facing issues with breath.
"Why didn’t you tell me earlier." Vivian wanted to say this to Pannis, but as soon as she opened her mouth, her voice was drowned out by the wind. Even she couldn’t hear herself speak. She had no choice but to curiously look down in search of Catherine and her companions, but being so far in the sky, she couldn’t find them at all. Fortunately, soon after, a plume of smoke rose from the riverbank. The smoke represented their location, she simply needed to land on the other side.
The magic power consumed by the teleportation magic and the teleported distance is closely related to the weight of objects and the precision of the magic array. The lighter the object, the more precisely the magic array is made, the less magical power will be consumed, and the further the teleportation can proceed. Just like the magic array she once laid out in the Crying Cave laboratory, that was an incredibly precise array. It took her nearly three days to complete. That level of array could practically reach the teleportation magic’s limit of 300 kilometers, and with her magic capacity, she could teleport hundreds of kilograms of items in one go. Of course, the magic array Vivian was preparing to use now, was temporarily engraved and don’t have the performance and precision of a carefully prepared magic array. Teleporting ten to twelve kilometers in one go was already its limit. If the distance were any further, the two ends of the magic array would not be able to accomplish synchronization, and the teleportation magic would be ineffective. So, according to the location of Catherine and her companions, finding a landing point that has a straight-line distance of no more than ten kilometers is the most important thing right now.
Seeing the smoke rise, Vivian was puzzled to find Pannis didn’t take any action. She had to tug at Pannis’s clothes and pointed at the smoke below. Pannis twisted his head, his brow furrowed tightly. He didn’t look at the smoke, but instead pointed skyward and shouted something.
Vivian couldn’t hear what Pannis was shouting, but that didn’t prevent her from following Pannis’s gaze and noticing the rapidly approaching black dots in the distant sky as well. They were flying at an astonishingly high speed, estimated to be over one hundred kilometers per hour. Within a few seconds, the black dots had grown larger in Vivian’s sight.
"What kind of magical beast is that?" Vivian shouted loudly, but to no avail. However, Pannis managed to understand Vivian’s question from her lip movements, leaned over, and shouted into Vivian’s ear: "Those are Rock Eagles, a total of five of them. They’re magical beasts from the western mountains and fly at extremely fast speed. We must descend immediately, I can also cast magic, I’ll control gravity and direction. You be on alert, if they come within range, attack them with magic. I remember you have no problem with casting spells while moving."
Vivian nodded and offered a thumb ups with a smile.
"Prepare your Feather Potion and the Light Body Spell." Pannis shouted: "If the kite loses control or eventually gets destroyed, drink it when I signal you to. Remember, do everything to protect yourself, I will buy you enough time. Don’t worry, I won’t die."
Vivian was taken aback and bit her lip, trying to make her speech as clear as possible: "You promised Catherine."
"I’ve changed my mind," Pannis declared boldly without a change in expression, "A man’s word isn’t always reliable."
Vivian’s eyes flickered, and after a brief silence, she started laughing uproariously. It was Pannis’s turn to be astonished for, over the months they had known each other, Vivian spent most of her time lost in her thoughts, hiding in a corner alone. Even when she was with the group, she had the least presence. Usually, she responded to conversations in a detached manner, but Pannis had never seen her laugh so freely, her laughter carrying an uncharacteristic maturity for her age.
Title:Pannis just did a few deep breaths without paying much attention, firmly turned around, and cut off the string of the kite with a single stroke of his sword. Without the pull of the string, the kite started to spin and, no longer hovering in mid-air, began to drift towards the dense forest. To Vivian’s stunned eyes, Pannis cut off the kite’s string, unfastened his own safety rope, and with both hands tightly gripped the frame of the kite above his head. He effortlessly moved across the kite, repositioning himself in the center, gripping the main supporting pillar. The coarse calculation of balance on the kite went through an immediate change; it leaned slightly on one side, and instead of flying straight, it began to circle above the Naramia river.
"We’re descending," Pannis shouted, fully aware that Vivian wouldn’t be able to hear him. A dull yellow light flashed in Pannis’s hand. The kite began to slowly get heavier. The strong wind could no longer fully support the weight of the kite, and they both began to slowly descend over the Naramia river.
Several rock eagles in the distance recognized the prey’s intent to descend but didn’t appear ready to give up. Instead, they increased their speed, hoping to seize their prey before it landed.
Pannis didn’t spare a glance at the rock eagles, leaving all the combat to Vivian while he focused on continuously changing the weight of the kite, ensuring it descended at a controlled pace without causing any disastrous damage to the kite.
"Little bird, little bird, joyful little bird," Vivian calmly sat on the support beam, gently humming a lullaby from her childhood bedtime stories. Her face held an enigmatic smile, occasionally estimating the distance of the rock eagles or directing her attention at the deeply concentrated Pannis. It was unclear what she was thinking.
"Freedom to fly, fly over the trees," Vivian faintly sang even as a rock eagle swooped in closer. Still leaning against the kite with her mysterious smile, she lazily brought out a crystal bottle with one hand. Her right hand, enveloped in a glove, dipped a finger into the bottle. On withdrawing her finger, the liquid stuck to it began to corrode the glove, leaving her skin charred. However, she showed no sign of pain on her face. It was as if the finger didn’t belong to her. With the corroded finger, she started inscribing in the air, creating several pentagrams and hexagrams magic arrays. They appeared and disappeared sporadically, orbiting around her, unaffected by the change in positions.
"Little bird, little bird, fly, fly," Vivian sang on with one hand lazily tapping on the kite’s beam in tune with the lullaby, while her right hand, like the deft fingers of a pianist, swiftly tapped upon several magic arrays. Multicolored low-rank spells poured out like raindrops, forming a magical barrage in mid-air that forced the relentlessly pursuing rock eagles to scatter and dodge. After the barrage, two of the eagles had severely injured wings and had to reduce their speed, giving up the chase. The three uninjured eagles, however, were still doggedly pursuing the kite, with Vivian’s magic spells successfully repelling their attempts to get close and attack the vulnerable kite.
"Be careful," Pannis suddenly shouted, rousing Vivian from her trance. The wind seemed to be getting weaker, with their voices now loud enough to be heard over it.
"We are going down," Pannis pointed out, directing his gaze downwards. The kite was now about fifty meters above the ground, just crossing the Naramia River and heading towards the forest about a kilometer from the riverbank: "Drink the Feather Potion. There’s no need for the Light Body Spell. As soon as we’re over the forest, we’ll jump."
"What about you?" Vivian asked loudly, "How are you going to get down?"
"I’ll jump too," answered Pannis, "Don’t worry, it won’t kill me."
Indeed, it wouldn’t kill them. Although professionals, with their ability to endure multiple times the physical stress of a normal person, could resist a fall from a twenty to thirty-meter height, that was only applicable to flat ground. They were now above a forest of trees, thirty to forty meters tall. Falling from a height of over fifty meters, the impact would be considerably reduced by the tree trunks and branches; it would hardly be fatal, although they can’t avoid some injuries. Vivian was aware of this and without further ado, immediately reached into her pocket for the Feather Potion. But just as she was about to drink it, Pannis stopped her: "No, don’t drink the Feather Potion. Jump now!"
Without asking why or hesitating, Vivian dropped the potion, unfastened her safety rope and jumped with Pannis. As soon as they were airborne, the three waiting rock eagles, now free of the spell threat, swooped towards Vivian from three different directions.
