The Naramia River originates in the Winged People Mountain Range in the northern part of the Yarran Continent. The melting snow from the towering mountain range flows downstream, traveling from the northwest to the southeast, crosses the western part of the Beastmen Prairie, enters the Shining Forest, and after making a ninety-degree turn in the middle of the forest, it flows southwest into the Sea Country, finally joining the Mist Sea.
The Naramia River is the fifth-longest river in the Yarran World. The main stream is two thousand five hundred kilometers long. The lengths of the three tributaries range from one thousand to one thousand three hundred kilometers, covering the entire western part of the continent along with the Bylgas River that also originates from the northern part of the Winged People Mountain Range. The average depth of the Naramia River is about twenty-five meters. Its deepest part even exceeds fifty meters. The shallowest part is still eight meters deep. Moreover, the width of the river is astonishing. During the flood season, the downstream width reaches fourteen kilometers. Even near the forest, the river’s average width is close to four kilometers and the narrowest place is also almost two kilometers wide. On bad weather days, it’s hard to see the opposite shore if you’re standing on the bank.
The original plan was to cross the river thirty kilometers south of their current location. A gorge there narrows the river to three kilometers, but the top of the gorge is no more than eight hundred meters apart. Decades ago, a mighty adventurer planted three thick metal chains across the chasm to provide convenience for occasional travelers who need to cross the river. But plans can never catch up with changes. They’ve reached their current location. If they detour south thirty kilometers, they would have to walk another thirty kilometers north after crossing the river, and that would be too time-consuming. So, they need to find a way to cross the river here.
"What should we do?" Ten people sat in a row by the river, their faces filled with anxiety as they gazed at the rapid waters. Even Elrad, who is most familiar with the forest, was at a loss: "If it doesn’t work out, we’ll have to detour."
"Can we build a raft?" Dora was looking around for suitable trees. "The lightwood over there is good, suitable for building a raft."
"It’s better not to." Pannis shook his head. "There are quite a few aquatic magical beasts in this stretch of the river. Water serpents, crocodiles, thornfish, and sword-mouthed fish. They’re all enormous and will attack from beneath the surface. We would struggle to attack them first, and they can topple the raft with just a random attack. If we fall into the water, I think few of us will survive."
"Pannis, you’ve been here before. How did you cross?" Catherine suddenly asked. "You should have been here before too."
"Yes, I’ve been here." Pannis shrugged helplessly, "We crawled across from the Red Sand Gorge as well. Consider how wide the river is, there are too many accidents that could occur."
"Well, things would be easy if I could get to the other side," Vivian looks thoughtful, "Then I could set up teleportation arrays on both sides, and teleport everyone over."
"Sending just one person would be too risky. If we do this, two must go together," Pannis stroked his chin thoughtfully, "If it’s just two people crossing, it might not be that hard."
"You’ve figured it out?" Catherine’s eyes lit up, "How do you cross?"
"It is indeed impossible to cross on the surface of the water." Pannis slowly lifted his head, looking at the sky, "Why not try crossing from above?"
"Do you have a flying device? Or can you fly?" Dora looked askance at Pannis, "If we could fly there, of course, that would be great. But none of us can fly."
"Just by looking at you, I can tell you never had a childhood." Pannis sneered, "You must have never played with a certain toy."
"A kite," Catherine clapped her hands, "Do you mean someone being pulled across while hanging onto a kite? But how do they get down?"
"Vivian can cast the Gravity Spell on herself," Pannis explained. "She just steadily increases her weight until it surpasses the lift of the kite, and then she’ll gradually descend."
"Right now, the key is how to let the kite carry two people over."
"Pannis, take your time to think. Dora, come, help me make a kite," Catherine jumped up and pointed to the lightwood that Dora had mentioned earlier, "Go and chop some lightwood."
"Chop quite a few," Pannis instructed, "We need to make the kite sturdy and large. Don’t worry about it being too heavy."
"But what if it’s too heavy? When it gets high, it flies smoothly in the wind, but it won’t take off if it’s too heavy on the ground, " Catherine asked skeptically, immediately smacking her own forehead, "I’m so dumb, we have Vivian’s wind-attribute magic."
"That’s right" Pannis replied, "I’ll carry Vivian over."
"No!" Vivian suddenly and uncomfortably rejected Pannis’s proposal.
Pannis paused, turning to gaze into Vivian’s eyes before he finally nodded: "I understand. We will be separately fixed to the kite and won’t be in contact with your body."
"I’m sorry." Vivian lowered her head somewhat embarrassed, softly saying: "Don’t overthink it, I didn’t mean anything else, I just..."
"I get it, and won’t overthink." Pannis flashed a big smile: "I will wait for you to tell me when you’re ready."
"Thank you." Vivian nodded forcefully: "Maybe that day will come soon."
"I look forward to it." Pannis bowed with a hand over his chest: "I eagerly await that day."
The origin of the kite in the Yarran Continent has been lost in history. It was first made during the mid-level of The Goblin Empire in the Second Age. The goblins had frail bodies but could pilot the towering Steel Giants to battle against various magical beasts, usually gaining the upper hand. Yet, the Steel Giants had a critical flaw. Due to their extraordinary height, it was difficult for the operator to survive if an accident occurred. Accidents often equated to death. Legend tells of a pilot who, inspired by seeing clothes blow in the wind, made the first rudimentary kite using lightweight, durable leather and specially made lightweight metal. Sadly, the kite couldn’t save his life. In one battle, his troop was easily destroyed by a Demigod Rank beast, and he died from the beast’s attack before the kite could be put to use.
Despite his death, the concept of the kite survived and since they were easy to make, they became one of the favorite toys for children.
Most members of the team had played with these toys as children, and still had an impression of how to make a kite. Coupled with their remarkable strength, cutting down trees and setting up the frame seemed effortless.
The kite’s frame was made of lightwood which was strong and light, making it the best choice for constructing rafts and ships. Even an average person could single-handedly lift three or four five-meter-long logs of this material. Now, it seemed that this material was also the top choice for making kites. As for the kite’s covering, Pannis risked getting rebuked by Catherine and personally dismantled a backup Katatak beast skin sleeping bag worth a hundred gold coins. The Katatak beast was a waterborne beast with dense skin that was highly waterproof and sealed well. Used as a sleeping bag, it was waterproof and warm, unaffected even in stormy weather. Pannis carefully peeled the thin waterproof Katatak beast skin inside and out, connecting the two pieces of skin solidly.
By the time this was done, the others had already assembled the kite’s frame. The bird-shaped frame was laid flat on the ground. Catherine diligently inspected every joint to make sure there was no possibility of an accident before finally relenting. Pannis set the removed beast skin on the frame, attached a few gadgets, and securely tied ropes that could hold the weight of five adults.
"The biggest issue now," Catherine said reluctantly, "is that we don’t have enough rope. If we add up all the hundred-meter-long ropes we have, it’s only about a thousand and a half meters, not enough to reach the other shore."
"That’s enough." Pannis reassured her: "We don’t need a rope long enough to extend to the other shore, we just need to reach a high enough altitude. Once we reach the highest point, we can loosen the rope after adjusting our gravity and finding the correct falling speed. We can rely on the wind and inertia to coast to the other side."
"That sounds very risky." Catherine said worriedly: "Without any control, who knows where you will end up."
"Don’t worry." Pannis replied with a smile: "Remember, we can use the Gravity Spell to adjust the angle and speed of our descent. It’s easy to find the landing spot. I’ve done this before. With a few kilometers of distance and a few hundred meters of height, I can pinpoint the landing spot within ten meters."
"No matter that, always put safety first." Catherine resumed her terrifying nagging mode whenever it was a dangerous situation, continually reminding Pannis in various ways. It wasn’t until Pannis solemnly promised to ensure Vivian’s safety that Catherine came out of her lecture mode and said, discontentedly: "I want you to guarantee the safety of both of you, not just Vivian’s."
"I won’t die." Pannis muttered under his breath.
"That’s not the point." Catherine checked to see if anyone was listening before lowering her voice to say: "I don’t know why you are able to reappear perfectly well despite apparently dying, but death is no joke and you should avoid experiencing it on purpose. So I want you to promise there won’t be any problem with your own safety."
"Okay, I promise." Pannis began with a smile, but under Catherine’s gaze, the smile slowly vanished. He finally got serious and nodded solemnly: "I will do my utmost to protect myself and Vivian."
"Be careful at all times." Catherine looked satisfied at last. She gently patted Pannis’s arm and turned to Vivian, who had been engrossed in creating the Array: "Is your Teleportation Array ready?"
"Done." Vivian clapped her hands. The invisible hand mimicking her movements dissipated and the tools in its grasp dropped into her open hand. After inspecting the Teleportation Array on the ground, and the mithril model of the other end in her hand, and testing it to ensure it was working correctly, she carefully slipped the mithril model into her pocket. With Lina’s help, she used ropes to secure herself to the kite.
"Alright, we can get going." Pannis swiftly fastened himself in place, "You can raise the wind now."
As Vivian began to chant quietly, a continuous gust of wind abruptly arose, persistently buffeting the skin of the kite. Filled with wind, the kite’s skin lifted off the ground, swaying as it ascended into the sky.
