Chapter 1518: Chapter 304 Suspicion

"So, Nellie is still alive?" Flare’s expression was odd, deeply worried yet tinged with a bit of relief, just like her current mood. Personally, she didn’t want Nellie to be killed by Pannis, not at all, even though Nellie was her rival. As long as Nellie was alive, Kyle’s heart would hardly move away from her, and she herself would hardly get another chance. However, Nellie was, after all, her friend; she would never hope for her friend’s death over a romantic dispute. Moreover, the queen’s pride wouldn’t allow her to stoop to such means to win, and more importantly, if Nellie had not died at Pannis’s hand, Pannis would not be as immersed in pain and struggle as she had imagined, which brought her some relief. But, setting aside personal factors, from the perspective of the whole world, she couldn’t help but deeply worry. If Nellie was not dead, it meant that Danacus within her was still alive, which was the most dreadful risk for the beings of the Yarran World. Thus, the queen bit her lip hard, fell silent for a while, then quietly asked again, "You didn’t have the heart to do it?"

"Yeah, she is still alive, although she nearly killed me." Pannis touched the wound on his body, smiled bitterly, and said, "It was close, I almost released the Hunting Arrow, but in the end, I couldn’t bring myself to do it, I simply didn’t have the courage to shoot that arrow."

"So, Nellie is still alive?" Flare repeated her earlier question, but anyone listening could understand that what she asked this time was not the same as before.

"Yeah, at least for now," Pannis paused, then nodded, "And she’s very much alive and spirited, as for what might happen next, none of us can predict."

"So it’s because she was disappointed that she almost killed you? No, that’s still not possible; even if disappointed, she wouldn’t do such a thing. However, why she attacked you isn’t important anymore, what’s important is, you should know what it means if she’s still alive." Flare wanted to say something, but ultimately swallowed it back, and said with a wry smile, "But, perhaps that’s better, putting all the burden on you was never fair. For the world, you have already sacrificed too much; the Yarran World owes you, not the other way around. From the beginning, it shouldn’t have been your responsibility to bear the pain of killing Nellie. You take good care of yourself, I’ll take on the responsibility the world has forced upon you."

The queen spoke very decisively, and she immediately got up and began checking her own equipment. Flare knew that in such a situation, if it were herself and the person inside was still Nellie, she would definitely let herself be killed without resistance, theoretically speaking it wouldn’t be difficult. But she was even more aware that if she truly were to kill Nellie, she would forever lose the chance to be Kyle’s other half; regardless of a thousand or ten thousand reasons, she would be Nellie’s murderer, having killed her own rival. Even if Kyle didn’t hold a grudge, she herself would always feel that way, and the two could never be together again. However, even so, the queen didn’t hesitate at all. Just as she said, matters concerning the safety of the entire world shouldn’t be left to one person; it shouldn’t rely on his sacrifices to save the world, everyone has a responsibility. Moreover, as someone deeply in love with Kyle, extending a helping hand when her lover couldn’t complete the task was the natural thing to do, even if the price was terrifying, Flare would not hesitate.

Therefore, her resolve was very firm, and she moved with a speed that didn’t at all resemble an elf. Once she made up her mind, she immediately took action without any of the elves’ usual dallying habits.

"Wait, are you planning to kill her?" Pannis raised his voice, stopping Flare’s movement: "This doesn’t sound like you, why are you so impulsive today? I suggest you listen to me completely before making a decision, after all, this is about the entire world, understanding everything completely is the safest course."

"Fine, I’ll listen to you." Flare blinked, the intensity around her dispersing, and she returned to being that gentle, languid queen, knee-sitting next to Pannis, and said, "I’m not being impulsive, I’m just worried that if we delay, something bad might happen."

"If it were to happen, it would have happened already; it wouldn’t have waited until now," Pannis sighed, his eyes carrying a hint of bafflement. "In fact, the most serious problem is just beginning now."

"What do you mean?" The situation had unfolded too quickly, and the young girls hadn’t reacted promptly; only now did they gather around, and Catherine asked incomprehensively, "What’s the most serious problem?"

"Do you remember what Kyle said when he first came out?" Flare seemed to understand and spoke on behalf of Pannis: "The most serious problem is related to that, isn’t it?"

"We were all fooled?" Catherine asked. "Are you referring to that line? I thought Pannis meant we were deceived by Lady Nellie."

"I thought so too initially, but after thinking carefully, it shouldn’t be just about Nellie. If it were just her issue, there would be no need to speak so gravely." Flare turned to Pannis and asked, "Moreover, when you say we were all fooled, who does ’we’ refer to? Who fooled us all?"

"You, me, her, this ’we’ refers to everyone: deities, living beings, undead, moribund, undead mages, everyone. It’s very likely that we were all deceived." Pannis sighed again, smiling wryly as he spoke: "As for who fooled us? Heh, there could only be one possibility, Danacus."

Flare shut her mouth, her expression darkening. At this moment, the gentle Flare regained the demeanor of the queen of eight hundred thousand elves, compelling a sense of awe from those who saw her. Her Majesty knew that since Pannis had spoken out, he must have been quite certain; otherwise, he wouldn’t have mentioned it at all. As for the possibility that Pannis was making up an excuse because he didn’t want to kill Nellie, Flare did not even consider it; she knew that it was not something Pannis would do. Thus, Her Majesty simply waited silently, waiting for Pannis to share his thoughts.

"This is just a hypothesis for now, but I dare not confirm it, nor do I have a way to prove it," Pannis said, despairingly yet with a trace of joy: "Perhaps, everything is a conspiracy by Danacus, who, indeed, had fallen into slumber, but from the beginning to the end, he retained a sliver of consciousness, overseeing everything."
