Chapter 1517: 303
"Pannis." A silhouette flashed, and Catherine, who had rushed to the rescue, had appeared by Pannis’s side. Before he could fall, she grabbed his arm, letting him lean on her, and urgently shouted, "Lina, hurry over here, Your Majesty, come have a look as well, see if there’s anything you can help with."
"I’m all right, I won’t die." Pannis gasped for air, clutching the still-bleeding wound on his chest and shaking his head. Then, suddenly puzzled, he looked at Flare and asked, "Why are you here? Is something wrong?"
"I..." Flare didn’t even take a second to think before she decided to hide her suspicions. Everyone was unaware of the situation inside; if Pannis didn’t know it was Nellie’s little scheme, and if he really had killed the person as Nellie had hoped, then revealing the truth would be sending Pannis to his doom. Thus, the queen just smiled gently and softly said, "Nothing much, I was just a bit worried about you, so I came to check on you first."
"Mm, I understand, thank you. But how did you know? Oh, it must have been Lady Forest Goddess who told you," Pannis said, his body weak but still managing to grit his teeth, "These deities know everything but just won’t say; is it because they want to wait and see the excitement in the end?"
"Ah? Me? What do I know?" Flare was taken aback by Pannis’s response and said with an embarrassed look, "What are you talking about? I don’t understand what you mean."
"No need to pretend, it’s Nellie inside, not Danacus. I already know." Pannis sighed and continued, "Thank you for coming all this way, it must have been hard."
"If I’d known you’d already guessed, I wouldn’t have rushed over so urgently," Flare said with a slight shake of her head, softly speaking, "It was nothing for me, just rushing over here. But you, since it was Nellie inside, how did you end up like this? What happened? I guess it must be different from what we feared, otherwise you wouldn’t be so covered in wounds."
"Hmm..." Lina suddenly stopped her Healing Divine Spell, moved closer to Pannis and asked, "Could it be that you and Lady Nellie... did you two have a falling out?"
"It’s the first time I’ve heard of quarrels being so ghastly, being stabbed all over," Catherine gave Lina a disdainful look, supporting Pannis as they slowly sat against the wall, while she treated his severe wounds and said irritably, "If you look closely, many of these wounds were caused by knight lances. Are you really saying that you were fighting with Lady Nellie? Did you actually have a falling out?"
"I admire your way of thinking." Pannis looked at the girls in front of him, his lips twitching, and finally could only helplessly shake his head and say, "It’s nothing, just a small accident, no fatal injuries, and besides, the curse on me hasn’t been lifted yet, so even if there were fatal injuries, it wouldn’t matter."
"What exactly happened?" Ignoring the two girls’ efforts to distract him while they treated him, Flare knew this approach wasn’t effective on a clever person like Pannis, so she didn’t waste any more time trying but asked straightforwardly, "Since you already guessed, I won’t hide it anymore. Following my original guess, it was supposed to be Nellie wanting you to come over and kill her before she lost control, right? If things had followed this guess, you wouldn’t have emerged covered in wounds, but now, the real situation is that you were nearly beaten to death, and clearly, the wounds are caused by Nellie. There aren’t many possibilities for your current condition, maybe only two, either Danacus, in his dying struggle, used Nellie’s body to launch an attack on you, making you extremely ragged, or something else happened that I cannot think of."
"You guessed right." Pannis wiped the blood from his face, giving a bitter smile, "These wounds, indeed, were left by Nellie. This time, she almost killed me outright."
"She couldn’t have attacked you, not even in death; it’s not possible unless she really lost control. But, it couldn’t have been such a coincidence that she lost control at the last moment." Flare furrowed her brows tightly and shook her head, "Never mind that question for now. The most important issue you haven’t told us yet—what exactly happened inside? You knew she was controlling the body and what her intentions were, and since you’ve now left the Door of Mist feeling reassured, does that mean... did you really strike her down?"
Pannis did not respond, but stared straight at Flare, or more precisely, at a certain spot behind her, his expression indescribable.
"Don’t stare at me like that. This question is very important. Death’s Gate has been opened, the two worlds have now connected, and the Realm of the Dead is no longer the forgotten land. So, you should know, countless eyes are watching here, and you know this question isn’t really for me to answer," Flare sighed. Understanding deities better than the other girls, she knew they were not alone. As a newly emergent deity exercising theocracy, Nellie still didn’t know how to prevent other deities from spying within her own territory. Therefore, except for her Divine Kingdom, where other deities couldn’t spy, the entire Realm of the Dead was defenseless, and what was happening here was connected to the whole world. Thus, at this moment, many deities had their gaze fixed on this ordinary-looking corridor, awaiting the outcome. As the earthly representative of Yuktiraxil, the queen could only inquire on behalf of her goddess and all the deities watching, "Nellie... how is she now? Did you really... kill her?"
Pannis still focused on the space behind Flare, as if seeing through the space to a far yet near world, seeing the eyes of the beings behind it. The silence lasted a long time until Flare almost began to worry about the patience of the deities, and then Pannis finally looked away and softly said, "No, I couldn’t kill her."
"That’s good, since she had walked to the edge of losing control... wait, what?" Flare suddenly stopped, shaking her head as if doubting her own ears, her voice becoming shrill, "You’re saying you couldn’t kill her?"
"You heard right." Pannis gave a faint smile and shook his head, "I didn’t make a move."
