Chapter 1238: Chapter 24: Giving You a Task

"Let’s make a deal," Pannis crouched on the metal fence outside the mansion, gazing at the silent street beyond the wall and speaking softly, "From now on, I won’t pull your tail anymore and you won’t bite me every day, okay?"

It was the early morning of the following day, with the sky just beginning to brighten. There were no pedestrians on the street yet. Pannis, wearing blue pajamas and a pink sleeping cap, yawned as he squatted on the fence, naturally holding two pasfruits, munching on one while he held the other to the side. Beside him, a white fox clung to his body and sat steadily on the fence, also yawning continuously. Every now and then, it stretched its head out to nibble on the pasfruit in his hand, happily wagging its tail with each bite, seemingly enjoying the taste of the pasfruit. However, upon hearing Pannis’s proposition, the little fox growled softly and forcefully turned its head away, disdainfully swatting at Pannis’s legs with its tail, clearly rejecting the proposal.

The fox’s human-like behavior was both amusing and frustrating for Pannis. He tapped its head a few times with the back of his hand then stuffed the remaining pasfruit into the fox’s mouth. He casually wiped the fruit juice off his hands onto the fluffy tail before the fox could bristle and pointed down the entire Fox street, explaining, "You’re smart enough to understand that this place is different from the forest you used to live in, and these people are different from the elves and rangers you used to meet. Hmm, it seems you get it, but actually, in some ways, there’s not much difference. For example, the range of this street, including the buildings on both sides, is your territory. Hmm, you probably don’t know what streets and buildings mean, but don’t worry, I’ll take you around in the next couple of days to understand. In your territory, everyone knows you exist, and you can move around freely, but please don’t randomly attack other creatures. As for outside your territory, although your strength allows you to go there, it’s better to go less often to avoid causing chaos."

"Awoo awoo," the little fox had already forgotten to be angry. It hugged its tail and licked the juice off its fur, quietly sobbing while nodding, its shiny nose sniffing the air vigorously as if trying to remember the surrounding scents.

"Although you’re just a magical beast, I know that you Illusion Foxes have higher perception than those girls inside, and your animal instincts make you more sensitive to malice than them. So I have a task for you," Pannis stroked the little fox’s head and advised earnestly, "From now on, you’re a member of this family, just like those two maids. You will also protect this home in your own way, safeguarding every member here, hmm, you understand what I’m saying, right?"

The little fox blinked its dark, big eyes and released its tail, nodding as if it truly understood Pannis’s words.

"Good, perhaps bringing you back was the right choice." Pannis showed a relieved smile, closed his eyes to listen to the surrounding sounds, and confirmed that it was still vacant around before whispering, "So, from now on, the safety of this home is in your hands. When they are at home, you must protect their safety, and if you detect any creature with hostile intentions approaching, alert them immediately. If they are out on missions and not at home, you must protect this place. If anyone with ill intentions breaks in here, use your Illusion Magic to trap them, then go inform the two girls who were scared by you yesterday, okay?"

The little fox nodded again, but its round eyes bore a trace of confusion as it tilted its head and stared at Pannis’s face, as if there was something it couldn’t figure out.

Pannis and the little creature locked eyes for a moment before he suddenly sighed deeply, laughed self-deprecatingly, picked up the little fox and placed it on his shoulder, softly saying, "I know what you’re wondering. But you’ll know the reason soon enough, hmm, in a few days you’ll understand, so for now, don’t ask, just agree to my request, alright?"

"Awoo." As if sensing Pannis’s melancholy and worry, the little one nudged his face with its head and licked his face with its tongue, comforting him in its own way. In fact, the human-like fox had chosen to follow the girls out of the Lost Forest, at least partly because of Pannis. This clever little creature sensed Pannis’s strength and friendliness, and knew the girls wouldn’t harm it. By sticking with these people, it didn’t have to struggle daily for food and safety in the dangerous jungle anymore, so it had followed reluctantly, staying by their side all the way back to the City of Knowledge. During this time, although the little fox and Pannis playfully bit and fought each other daily, their bond, between two fools, had actually grown stronger. So, when it noticed Pannis was unhappy, the little Illusion Fox, being very sensible, didn’t engage in mischief but instead soothed his spirit.

"Tap, tap, tap," footsteps suddenly echoed from the end of Fox Street, a figure bursting with youthful vibrance and liveliness ran through the morning mist. Pannis scratched the little fox’s chin and whispered with a low chuckle, "Here comes the kid, little fox. This child is a friend who often passes by in the morning. If you notice she’s in any trouble and it’s convenient, try to help her out."

"Ha, monster uncle!" The little girl had already spotted the figure crouching by the fence from afar and exclaimed in surprise, instinctively bending down to look for a stone or a branch to throw. However, it was obviously too late. Pannis pulled out a small pouch from his pajama pocket and tossed it toward the girl, laughing loudly, "You’re too slow, dummy. I got you first this time."

"Wuu, monster uncle, that’s cheating." The little girl caught the pouch deftly, placing her hands on her hips and pouting, "Hmph, just you wait, uncle. Next time, I’ll definitely show you how awesome I am."

"I’m so scared," Pannis teased, "If you keep acting so fierce, be careful your little partner might be afraid to go to church with you and secretly go with someone else."

"He wouldn’t dare!" The little girl waved her fists, but suddenly realizing what she had said, her face turned red, and she stammered, "You, you... you’re so annoying, uncle, what are you talking about? Huh? What’s this? Such a cute little dog."

"Grrr!" The little Illusion Fox growled unhappily at being mistaken for a dog by the little girl. However, the girl clearly didn’t realize her mistake and continued happily, raising her hands, "Monster uncle, can I hold it?"

"This isn’t a dog, this is a very mighty little Illusion Fox. It’s very arrogant, and much older than you. You should treat it like an elder," Pannis said while stroking the little fox’s head, "If Catherine and the others aren’t home, and you run into trouble, you can come here to seek its help. It’s very smart; it understands everything you say."
