Chapter 1239: Chapter 25 I Never Want to See You Again

"Hmm, is that Uncle Fox?" The little girl looked at the petite fox with puzzlement, muttering to herself in confusion, then suddenly stretched out her arms again, "But still, you’re really cute. Let me give you a hug, Uncle Fox."

"Roar," the little fox disdainfully flicked its tail and hopped back onto the metal fence, arrogantly turning its head away and issuing a low growl from its throat.

"Don’t make it angry, you little brat," Pannis warned, trying to intimidate her: "If you come to ask for its help later, watch out, it might completely ignore you. Humph, it would be no use crying then."

"Hmph, don’t try to scare me. Uncle Fox wouldn’t be as petty as you." The little girl crinkled her cute nose and said sweetly to the little fox: "Right, Uncle Fox? I just knew you were the kindest and wouldn’t bully me like Monster Uncle does."

The little fox understood her once again. Although it still appeared haughty, its tail had started to curl upward and move back and forth; its eyes narrowed into slits as it looked down at the girl on the street, nodding its head with an almost human-like gesture.

"Haha, I told you. Monster Uncle is the pettiest, always trying to frighten me." The little girl tossed the rolled-up newspaper towards Pannis and waved the bag in her hand, saying, "Thanks for the snacks, Monster Uncle. I’m off to continue delivering newspapers. Hey, it feels heavier this time. Seems like there’s more stuff inside."

"Given how much you’ve grown and fattened up, of course there needs to be more," Pannis could always find the topic others least liked to hear and then say it with complete seriousness: "If I put less inside, I’m afraid it wouldn’t be enough for you to eat."

"You’re the one getting fatter." The little girl clenched her teeth and stomped her foot, running off in a huff, her clear voice carrying back, "Meanie Monster Uncle, hmph, I never want to see you again! Tomorrow, I’m going to tell Sister Catherine that you bullied me, just you wait."

"Never want to see me again?" Pannis watched the girl’s figure disappearing into the distance, the smile fading from his eyes, murmuring to himself, "If everyone thought that... well, that might not be so bad, actually."

"Howl?" The little fox settled beside Pannis, once again letting out a confused whimper, curiously staring at Pannis’s face as the smile disappeared, as if trying to understand what this companion, who often played with it, was really thinking.

"I’m pondering a very important question, a question that if not resolved, I fear I won’t be able to sleep well for quite some time," Pannis said seriously, stroking his chin and speaking to the little fox: "That dummy just now, she called you Uncle Fox, right?"

The little fox, not understanding why Pannis suddenly asked this question, simply licked its front paw and nodded in confusion.

"But did she get it wrong? Are you really a fox uncle, or are you a fox auntie?" Pannis slowly reached out to the little fox, speaking seriously, "I suddenly realized that up to now, we still haven’t verified whether you’re a male fox or a female fox. Maybe it’s time to check now, else my curiosity really won’t let me go."

"Roar." The fur on the little fox’s body bristled again, and with its sharp teeth bared, it didn’t even bother with a threatening posture before it pounced straight onto Pannis’s face. Caught off guard by the impact, Pannis cried out in alarm, losing his balance on the fence and tumbling backward onto the lawn of the mansion behind him. The two fools then started to scuffle on the lawn once more, with tufts of grass being uprooted and tossed about as if the scene were a fierce battlefield.

"You two idiots, starting a fight first thing in the morning." Lina’s voice rang out from not far away, "Repairing the lawn also involves costs, you know. If Sister Catherine sees you destroying the lawn like this, tsk tsk, I think you two can forget about eating today."

"Awoo." A white shadow flashed, and the little fox was already by Lina’s leg, wagging its tail and acting as though it was very well-behaved and hadn’t done anything wrong, coquettishly circling around Lina’s legs. The priest girl, both annoyed and amused, bent down to pick up the spinning little creature, tapping its cold, moist nose, "Hmph, if you dare to damage the lawn again, I’ll go tell Sister Catherine, and playing pitiful will be useless."

"Whine," the little one’s erect ears drooped, and its tail sagged as it made a show of admitting wrongdoing, but the fast-turning eyes betrayed its sly thoughts.

Of course, the priest girl didn’t really intend to pursue the matter seriously. Holding the little one, she raised her voice and said, "And you over there, lying on the ground, are you planning to keep playing dead? Sister Catherine is probably about to start her morning exercise, and do you intend to let her see the scene of the crime with her own eyes?"

"Ahem." In an instant, Pannis was in front of Lina, the grass that had been on his clothing magically cleaned off as he feigned a cough, "Oh, you’re up? The weather is really nice today, haha... Eh? What’s with that outfit, are you planning on going out? So early?"

Indeed, Lina was not dressed in her usual casual home dress. Although she hadn’t put on the leather armor she usually wore for adventuring, she was wearing a white priest’s robe, with a war hammer and spellbook hanging at her waist, her head wrapped in a headscarf often worn by nuns and some female priests in the church, and a square stone emblem of The Church of the Earth Goddess hanging around her neck. At a glance, anyone could tell she was a clergy of The Church of the Earth Goddess. In fact, The Church of the Earth Goddess didn’t have strict requirements for clergy attire, except for very formal worship services; otherwise, wearing the holy robe sufficed. Which meant that the priest girl was dressed in her full formal attire today only because she was going to attend an official religious service at the church.

"Yes, I’m planning to visit the church. Having luckily survived my journey to the heart of the Forest of Death, I should go and express my gratitude to the Lady Earth Goddess," Lina nodded, "I went to your room to find you, but seeing you weren’t there, I guessed you’d already come out to lurk on the wall and tease the girls doing their morning exercises. And sure enough, here you are."

"I wasn’t teasing any girls; I was just breathing some fresh air, right, Fox?" Pannis started to defend himself but then realized a key point and asked in confusion, "Wait, if you’re going to the church to worship the Goddess, why did you come to find me in my room?"

"Of course, it’s to have you accompany me there. What did you think, that I came to ask you out on a date first thing in the morning?" Lina’s face turned red as she spoke, not allowing Pannis to argue, she grabbed his hand and pulled him towards the gate, "No excuses now, you’re coming with me to church."

"Hey, wait, I haven’t had breakfast yet." Pannis struggled and wailed, "Calm down a bit, even if you don’t let me eat breakfast, you can’t make me go to church in my pajamas, help, someone’s gone mad!"
