Chapter 1231: Chapter 17 The Cost of Borrowing

"What do you need us to do?" Flare asked, "Or rather, what are you planning to do, and how do we need to cooperate?"

"First of all, I definitely need to borrow the Bow of Release and the Hunting Arrow," Pannis held up a finger and explained, "Without these two Sacred Items, I have no chance of killing Danacus, so I must rely on them."

"Hmm, these are the Sacred Items of our Elf race," Flare said with a smirk, "It’s a bit difficult for me to explain to my people why they’re being borrowed all the time. The Bow of Release is manageable, but especially the Hunting Arrow, it definitely won’t be possible to return it this time, right? So, if you want to borrow them, you have to pay a price, which is not at all unreasonable, don’t you think?"

"I am Your Majesty, after all," Pannis said, rubbing his forehead with a headache. He had no countermeasure against the occasionally naughty queen and could only express his distress, "Let’s not turn such serious matters into a joke."

"Weren’t you having quite a bit of fun just now?" Flare teasingly wrinkled her nose and huffed, "A price must be paid, otherwise I won’t agree to lend them to you."

"Alright, alright, whatever makes you happy," Pannis sighed, "Tell me, what price must I pay for you to agree?"

"Hmm, let me think," Her Majesty the queen tilted her head, feigning deep thought, yet suddenly a blush rose to her cheeks and she chuckled, shaking her head, "I haven’t decided yet, we’ll talk when you get back. But remember, you owe me a price, and if you want to pay it back, you must return alive. Otherwise, your years of reputation will be tarnished. I will spread the word that you fled to avoid paying your debts."

"Phew, worthy indeed of being the queen of a race, so calculating," Pannis muttered grumpily, "This is really like two demands, isn’t it? I’m not a fool who can’t see that."

"However you put it, it’s still just one demand," Flare playfully scrunched her nose, her face smiling, but there was an unshakeable concern hidden in her green pupils, "So, will you agree to owe this price?"

"I have no choice but to agree," Pannis said distressedly, "Otherwise, if you won’t lend the Sacred Items to me, what happens to my plan?"

"Good that you’ve agreed," a bit of the grave concern faded from Flare, who had been worried Pannis might stubbornly refuse, indicating he never planned to return alive, intending to die alongside Nellie in the World of the Dead. But since he had agreed to her demand, it meant that at least in his plan, he was prepared to leave alive and didn’t have the intention to be buried with Nellie. Therefore, Flare sighed with relief and said softly, "Then you needn’t worry about the Sacred Items; I’ll explain to the Elder Council. Actually, it’s not that difficult, since the Elder Council already agreed to lend you the Hunting Arrow, they were prepared for it to be used up. Whether it happened the last time or this time doesn’t really make a fundamental difference."

"Thank you," Pannis bowed sincerely to Flare and continued to explain, "After leaving the forest, I’ll choose the fastest way back to the Holy City, rest there for a few days, and then head for the Sighing Desert."

"No problem, I’ll arrange for you to leave with the aerial resupply squad," Flare nodded, "Now for convenience in war, the Business Federation and the goblins have built several supply stations within the domains of various forces. In addition to the frequently traveling ground supply troops, there’s also a rapid transport squad composed of Elves, Winged people, and humans, dominated by flying units and Skyboats, designed to transport a small but urgent need for special strategic resources and special tactical squads. When it’s time, you’ll ride Horned Eagle Beasts to the border region, and then the transport squad will take you back to the City of Knowledge. Well, from a certain perspective, you can be considered special strategic resources, too."

"Hey, why not a special tactical squad?" Pannis protested with a few dissatisfied grunts but knowing he couldn’t change the will of Her Majesty, he reluctantly said, "The rest is up to me. After resting, I’ll head to Earth’s Scar on my own on a magic-powered motorbike."

"You won’t need an air passage?" Flare asked frowningly, "Although the Skyboats and aerial troops can’t enter the Sighing Desert due to the Sighing Winds, they could take you all the way to the far end of the Country of Sand. That should be faster than using a magic-powered motorbike by a day or two, and it would save you some energy."

"No, I need some time to adjust, and in fact, I’m not planning to rush into the Realm of the Dead too quickly," Pannis shook his head, "I need some time to adjust my physical state and understand the new powers. Also, if I go too fast, it wouldn’t be beneficial for your coordination outside, so riding a magic-powered motorbike turns out to be the best choice."

"Alright, that’s up to you," Flare said, "Then what? Do you need troop deployment to coordinate with your actions? If so, tell me in advance and I will raise the request at the Union Meeting."

"No, I just need the frontline blockade units to help me with supply and rest," Pannis thought for a moment and said, "If things go as expected, I should be able to enter the new Undead Fortress directly. If Nellie can’t even guarantee that much, she would not have called for my help, as it would be impossible. As for after entering the Realm of the Dead, I’ll deal with the problems myself, don’t worry. I’m still me, and I won’t do things I’m not sure of."

"What if something unexpected happens?" Flare pursued, "What if you can’t successfully enter the Undead Fortress or break through Death’s Gate?"

"Of course, I’ll come back," Pannis looked at Flare strangely, asking in confusion, "That would mean my guess was fundamentally wrong. What would I be doing lingering at the doorstep of their fortress? As dumb as it might look to go there and back, I’d have no choice but to return."

"Ah, that makes sense," Flare’s ears twitched and she spoke awkwardly, "Cough cough, well, leaving that aside, let’s say, what if this whole thing was a trap by Danacus from the start? We nearly stepped into his trap last time, and it was only because you had prepared for the worst in advance, combined with Nellie’s sacrifice, that we achieved success. Surely, you’ll be cautious this time, so what would you do then?"

"Indeed, this whole affair might be Danacus’s scheme from start to finish," Pannis replied, "But whether it’s a trap or not, does it make any difference to the situation?"
