Chapter 1230: Chapter 16 This is Our War
"We need to be clear about one thing, why did she send us this message?" Pannis responded, "Obviously, it can’t be because she was too idle and just wanted us to know she was still here. Given Nellie’s character, in such a tense situation, she wouldn’t do such a trivial thing. So, she must have had her own reasons for doing it. By figuring out her motives, it will become clear what we need to do. Therefore, after realizing this, I started to consider what her motive could be."
"Giving us this information at this time likely has a very limited purpose," Flare pondered aloud. "Considering she emphasized twice that the war isn’t over yet, there might be only one possibility. She feels that she can no longer hold on, that she’s gradually losing control over her body, so she’s... seeking help from the outside."
"That’s my view as well," Pannis nodded. "Although I don’t know why she can’t directly use those undead under her command to speak with us, one thing is clear—she is indeed asking for help or, more precisely, she is inviting us, hoping I can intervene in her war with Danacus. And the only way to intervene is to enter the Realm of the Dead and fight alongside her once more."
"Sigh, Kyle, I have a question to ask you," Flare said gently as she refilled Pannis’s teacup softly, "Have you thought it through? If all this is true, after entering the Realm of the Dead again, what will you need to do? Do you truly understand what it entails?"
"Of course, I understand," Pannis lowered his gaze, letting the steam from the tea cup cloak his eyes, his voice as calm as if discussing something completely unrelated to himself, "You don’t need to remind me. I’m well aware that I need to help Nellie kill Danacus—strictly speaking, what I need to do is, with Nellie’s help, personally end her own physical form."
Flare didn’t speak, merely gazing softly at Pannis’s face with a look of compassion. Pannis, likewise, did not continue speaking, his gaze still lowered on the crystal-clear tea in his cup, as if captivated by something fascinating within it. They remained silent for a long time until Flare gently sighed and said quietly, "It seems you have indeed made your decision."
"The time has come to make a decision," Pannis’s tone held a trace of melancholy as he sighed, "Over a hundred years ago, I missed one such decision. This time I won’t run away; it’s my responsibility to face, my fate to meet, and it must be borne by me alone. There is no second choice."
"I’m sorry for asking so detailed, making you face this harsh choice again," Flare leaned forward and patted Pannis’s hand resting on the table to comfort him, lowering her voice, "You’ve convinced me; rest assured, I will propose this plan at the upper-level meeting on your behalf, and I will spare no effort to push it through. You just said, let me handle this; do you have more pressing tasks, are you planning to gather your companions again? Who do you intend to call upon this time? Count me in for sure; after all, I also wish to fulfill Nellie’s last wishes."
"No, you’re mistaken; I’m not planning to gather everyone for another expedition," Pannis shook his head, "This war is no longer like before; it doesn’t belong to the whole world. It’s a war between myself, Nellie, and Danacus. It’s our own fight."
"Are you joking?" Flare’s brows furrowed again as she asked sternly, "What you mean to say is, you’re planning on entering the Realm of the Dead alone, and facing Danacus in a final battle by yourself?"
"That is exactly what I mean, and I’m not joking," Pannis nodded. "I’ve said it’s my responsibility to face, so it must be borne by me alone, not by everyone together. Besides, each of you has your responsibilities, your own tasks to fulfill."
"Explain it to me in detail, what exactly are you thinking?" Flare did not show frustration but sat composedly on a stool, refilling the teapot with fresh green tea leaves and asked calmly, "You’re not the kind of person who acts recklessly out of impulse. If I were dealing with Nellie, I might be worried, but since I’m facing you, you must have your own thoughts. What makes you think you can, with your own strength, charge into the Earth’s Scar at the center of the Sighing Desert, breach the heavily defended fortresses of the undead, cross the Desert of the Deceased World that took thirteen of us to barely cross together, and still have the energy to confront Danacus directly and claim a final victory?"
"Because Nellie invited me," Pannis smiled, "Among those six undead theoretically aligned with Nellie, through Danacus’s declaration, they invited me saying, if you’re not afraid of death, come revisit my world. I will show you the terror of death. Do you think these words stem from Nellie’s will, or from Danacus’s will?"
"Just based on this statement, it’s hard to be certain," Flare shook her head, "Both possibilities exist, difficult to judge which is more likely."
"That’s why I said it’s hard to explain. It’s a unique understanding between me and her, incomprehensible to others," Pannis said with a smile, pretending not to notice the sadness that briefly crossed Flare’s face at the mention of the unique understanding, "From just that one sentence, I already know she is subtly inviting me. She will find a way to create a safe path for me among the undead, allow me to penetrate deep into the interior of the Realm of the Dead, face Danacus himself, and then... personally end her."
"However, this isn’t just your affair, or rather, it’s not just between the two of you; this decision affects the entire Yarran Continent," Flare continued trying to persuade Pannis, "Have you considered it? This kind of no-retreat plan, what will you do if you find your ideas were mistaken? You won’t have any chance to turn back."
"That’s what I mean, you all have your own tasks," Pannis said earnestly, "I can’t guarantee that my plans won’t go wrong, so I need you to support me from the outside, to minimize the risks of the plan."
"It turns out you do have a backup plan," Flare laughed helplessly, "Tell me, what do you need us to do?"
