Chapter 1228: Chapter 14 The War is Not Over Yet
"Danacus is certainly no idiot," Pannis said, narrowing his eyes. "However, he won’t take back the Divine Power from me. He can only wait for me to come to him, then try to kill me personally."
"Why are you so sure?" Flare’s hand shook slightly as she held her teacup, looking straight into Pannis’s eyes as she asked in a deep voice, "Kyle, this is a very important question. If there’s anything I don’t know about, you’d better not hide it from me. That way, I can help us all fulfill Nellie’s wish. You should understand that if I were just representing myself, I wouldn’t ask any further after what you said. But now it’s different; if I’m to propose this at the high council meeting, then I represent the entire Elf race, and without sufficient reason, I wouldn’t make such a proposal."
"It’s hard to explain to you," Pannis sighed and said with difficulty: "This is a tacit understanding between her and me."
"You’ve made contact with her?" Flare immediately denied her own guess, shaking her head vigorously: "Impossible, you definitely haven’t contacted her directly, so it must be indirect. What message did she send you? And you believe she still retains her consciousness?"
"Sort of," Pannis nodded. "At least I believe she still exists, at least for now. And she wants me to find her, hoping that we can join forces from within and without to utterly destroy Danacus."
"The reason?" Flare fell silent for a long while, seemingly trying to understand the implications of Pannis’s words. Only when the steam had long ceased to rise from her teacup did Her Majesty the Queen ask in a low voice, "If what you say is true, then there might indeed be a hope for success, but after all, you are only making a guess based on tacit understanding, which may not necessarily be fact, right? So, I need to know, what’s your reason for this speculation?"
"I suppose the Demigod among you has already relayed to you what we encountered on the inside; we told him on the way." Seeing Flare nod in understanding, Pannis continued, "In the last battle of Catherine and the others, a group of Undead with Divine Wisdom appeared, calling the Divine Servants traitors who had forsaken the Grimreaper, yet the Divine Servants were utterly loyal to Danacus, strange, isn’t it? But it could also explain—if these intelligent Undead had been born in the era when Danacus was severely wounded and asleep and Nellie could barely control the Divine Body, then the Divine Servants, ever loyal to Danacus, and tirelessly striving for his resurrection, would naturally be seen as traitors by Undead born because of Nellie."
"That is one way to understand it," Flare nodded: "But I really don’t see how this relates to your speculation, or shall we say, to your tacit understanding with Nellie?"
"Because there’s no connection," Pannis shrugged: "I never said the two were related."
Flare said nothing more, lowering her head and staring intently at the teacup on the table, as if seriously contemplating the damage that the teacup might cause if smashed against someone’s head.
"Calm down, calm down, this is just padding, a way to lighten the mood. Don’t be so serious," Pannis chuckled awkwardly, facing Flare’s unfriendly gaze: "Let’s drop the irrelevant questions. Before those skeletons left, they declared on behalf of the Grimreaper that the Undead’s army would ultimately engulf the world. Of course, that’s not important. What is important is that before issuing that declaration, they said something else. They said, ’The war is not yet over.’"
"The war indeed is not over; I don’t see any issue with his statement," Flare’s voice grew softer, her eyebrows furrowed tighter, her face revealing a puzzled expression: "Wait, at that time, the war hadn’t even started. It’s absurd to say it’s not over unless he was counting from the day of the last Return of the Dead. But even counting from then, the statement is peculiar."
"Of course, there are many possible explanations," Pannis said, squinting his eyes: "So at the time I just took note of it and didn’t draw any conclusions until... I heard the same statement a second time."
"There was a second time?" Flare asked in confusion: "Also from the Undead? You’ve never mentioned this before."
"That’s why I’m bringing it up now. After everything ended, we let go of a few ghouls; those little guys were among the first batch of ghouls who had a lot of autonomy. They actually leaned more towards our side, thus in our fight with them, they remained neutral and didn’t join in." Pannis explained: "We thought they had died with the moribund after the fight, but they lived on thanks to the Grimreaper’s boon. If you were Danacus, would you let several followers who leaned toward the enemy live?"
"Of course not," Flare said thoughtfully: "So you think it was Nellie who allowed them to live? That is to say, Nellie not only still exists but also has a certain amount of influence?"
"I can’t comprehend the state of a Deity, so I can’t be certain about Nellie’s current situation, but from their survival, it’s a big possibility," Pannis agreed with a nod: "Then, after the battle, they made a point of letting us know they were still alive, using the cause—issuing a threatening declaration on behalf of the Grimreaper."
"That’s foolish," Flare said in a deep voice: "This behavior is highly suspicious."
"That’s what I thought," Pannis’s smile became more serene: "Especially when before their meaningless threat, their representative took the trouble to remind me again that ’The war is not yet over.’"
"’The war is not yet over’? If once could be coincidence, the second time can’t be taken so lightly," Flare said, absently swirling the teacup in her hand while staring into the void above it: "’The war is not over’ can’t just refer to the Undead War; otherwise, it would be a meaningless phrase."
"When I heard that phrase the second time, I too was puzzled for a while, unsure of what it was hinting at," Pannis said, narrowing his eyes: "Eventually, I realized that maybe we’ve all gone astray. This war doesn’t refer to the Undead War, nor does it refer to our feud with Danacus. Otherwise, they wouldn’t need to repeat it. It’s even possible to say this war has nothing to do with us at all, it’s not our war."
"I understand now," Flare exclaimed, suddenly looking up at Pannis: "Indeed, it’s not our war. It refers to the war between Nellie and Danacus."
"Yes, it’s the war between Nellie and Danacus," Pannis repeated softly with a subtle expression: "For a hundred years, she has probably never stopped resisting, even after Danacus had awakened, she never ceased."
