Chapter 1207: Chapter 319 Leather

"This is indeed Philarx’s notes," said Dillie, lying in front of the sheepskin by the warm and cozy bonfire. "What’s strange is that it still carries that pungent Mage scent Philarx left behind, as if it was just written."

Although it was decided to rest here for two days before returning, everyone agreed that no one wanted to enter the temple that had left a deep impression on them again, so they simply set up a simple encampment to face any adversaries on the plaza. As they were staying only two nights, there was no need for anything overly complex – as long as they could safely spend the night. Clean fires were set up in the plaza, and a few tents were scattered around the fires. There wasn’t even a Concealment Array set up on the outer perimeter, but a large number of traps had been placed instead. Anyone attempting to rashly enter the camp would not be able to avoid the attacks from these traps, which in some ways, also counted as a stringent defensive measure. Since everyone was exhausted, Pannis did not prepare too complicated a dinner, but simply stewed a pot of jerky soup, which served as their supper. After hastily eating dinner, everyone gathered together to reopen the sheepskin that Philarx had left behind.

"I don’t quite understand what Master Fila means," said Catherine, puzzled, once they got to this point. No one dared to take the content mentioned in Philarx’s letters as a joke anymore. Although they could not understand Philarx’s current state, the information provided so far could confirm that every word he had said before was targeted. The girls believed this letter would be no exception. Therefore, after reading the letter repeatedly, even Catherine, full of doubt, asked, "We can disregard the part where the Master congratulates you on breaking the Seal, which if not referring to power then must refer to the spiritual aspect – that’s quite normal. But what we don’t understand is the part that comes later. Our mission was clearly a failure, and Death’s Gate was successfully opened, so why does the Master still say they were doomed to fail? Why does he think they are the most pitiable group?"

"I’ve already said not long ago that for the future of the Yarran World, the opening of Death’s Gate might not necessarily be a bad thing," Pannis replied, shaking his head just like he had in the afternoon, without directly answering Catherine’s question. "Now it seems Philarx also thinks this way. As for why we think this, don’t ask for now. The time hasn’t come to tell you, and it would be too complicated to explain. When the time comes, you will naturally understand."

"Is... that so?" The trust in Pannis stopped the girls from pursuing this matter any further, even the most curious Lina, who suppressed her doubts in her heart. They believed that Pannis would never harm them, no matter what. Since he plainly said he needed to keep a secret, there was certainly a reason for doing so. Thus, Catherine took the initiative to change the subject, "What I’ve never understood is exactly how Master Fila managed to place the sheepskin in that location and coincidentally have Lina shoot it by accident. Ever since I saw the Master’s last message, I’ve felt that he has been observing us all along. This letter also mentioned it, though he said he wasn’t always watching us. But, I think that’s just sarcasm, and he’s just too embarrassed to admit it. So I really don’t understand – can he predict the future, having foreseen our every action a year in advance? Or is it that he can directly see everything that will happen in the future? Even if that’s the case, it can explain how he knew where Lina’s arrow would hit and therefore placed the sheepskin in the corresponding position, but it still doesn’t explain how he could have placed it in that temple."

"Indeed, if it were just foresight, he wouldn’t be able to make the sheepskin appear there," Pannis nodded. "I can’t believe that a Divine Servant would be foolish enough to let someone place objects at will in their own lair. The moribund, using Danacus’s power, can sense every corner of the temple just like spiders at the center of a web. Even with Philarx’s abilities, it wouldn’t be possible to do it unnoticed, and if he wasn’t detected at that time, it wouldn’t be long before the moribund sensed something odd was up, so he must have used some other method."

"I can guess that he used some other method," Catherine said with a wry smile. "The question is, what method was that?"

"How would I know?" Pannis said, spreading his hands. "Remember the box Philarx left for us a few days ago in the cave? The box that had been there for hundreds of years, hidden behind an artificial rock wall – maybe he really can travel through time."

"But that still doesn’t make sense," Catherine shook her head. "The temple was always under the control of the moribund. If you go back further, it was buried underground. If we push the timeline even further back, it was controlled by the moribund before it was buried. At no point in time would Master Fila have the opportunity to place that sheepskin, right?"

"Indeed, not in the past. There was no chance," Pannis countered. "But what about the future?"

"The future?" Catherine was stunned. "You mean... after you killed the moribund?"

"Exactly," Pannis nodded. "For example, right now, there’s nobody in the temple, and if Philarx sneaked in there right now, placed the sheepskin on the roof, and then sneaked out, that would be easy, right?"

"You’re joking," Catherine said, not understanding. "Whatever is placed now is too late; the explosion has already happened, how could that possibly..."

"Theoretically, yes," Pannis said with a half-smile. "But what if he could reverse the flow of time? If he places it now, then the moment before too long ago, that sheepskin would have appeared there. Don’t forget what he once said: time can be reversed, the end is the beginning."

"That still doesn’t make sense," Vivian interjected. "If that were true, when you went up to check just now, you should have also found another unactivated sheepskin, but you didn’t. So, um, that’s not right either. My thoughts are a bit muddled; let me think about it again."

"I wouldn’t recommend you think too deeply into it," Pannis seriously said. "One Philarx is enough. You have to understand, time as an Element is too profound, and it’s not a realm that mortals are qualified to dabble in. If you keep pondering it, you might go mad from its complexity before you can comprehend the true nature of time, and I don’t want to see you driven insane by time like that fool Philarx. Um, why are you looking at me like that?"

"Well, it’s written on the paper," said Catherine with a weird expression. "Master Fila said, he certainly isn’t crazy, you backstabbing scoundrel."

Pannis’s facial muscles twitched, and he fell completely silent. It wasn’t only him; everyone stared at the last line of the sheepskin, sinking into silence.
