Chapter 1206: Chapter 318 The Road Home Not Taken
The plaza of the Death Temple was the safest place in the core area of the Forest of Death under the night sky. Although the ritual had been completed, and because the ritual had gathered a large amount of Energy of Death, causing the expanding Forbidden Land of Living Souls to begin to gradually shrink, it would still take a very long time to return to its original size. Therefore, this area remained under the envelopment of the Forbidden Land of Living Souls. Additionally, the Divine Servants here, though already dead, still belonged to the Grimreaper’s Holy Sanctuary. The surrounding Upper Rank magical beasts, instinctively fearing the presence of the deity, would not dare to easily step into the temple’s range even without the Forbidden Land of Living Souls. Thus, there was no other place safer than this temple.
After everything had ended, they should have left the area as soon as possible and quickly returned to the Elven Royal Court to use the Elf’s Messenger Bird to notify all parties that Death’s Gate might have been opened. However, Pannis insisted that everyone rest here for two days, waiting until their bodies had recovered to a certain extent before leaving. Although the girls were anxious to report the news, they had to admit that Pannis’s reasons were sufficiently compelling. Pannis believed that as one of the main combatants, Dillie had been seriously injured, and among the girls, Vivian had to remain in a weakened state for a few days, and Ava also needed some time to recover from her injuries. The other three, although they no longer had visible injuries, had expended a great deal of physical and mental energy along the way, especially during the final battle where five of them faced hundreds of enemies. The situation no longer allowed them to continue on bravely; they had to rest in situ for two days to prevent unnecessary casualties after everything had ended. Although they wanted to refute, the girls had to admit that Pannis was right. Everyone’s bodies had reached their limits and, without proper rest, problems could easily arise on the journey back, so eventually they agreed to Pannis’s request.
"I am hardly seriously injured," Dillie, reduced to the size of a domestic dog and wrapped in bandages, stubbornly said, "My condition now couldn’t be better."
"I don’t talk to fools," Pannis snorted coldly, "I really don’t know what’s going on in your head, pretending to be dead by deliberately using your energy to open up a wound that had been healed by Divine Spell. Is this a unique preference in your world?"
"You know nothing; it’s called professional spirit. You obviously don’t understand this term, hahahaha, even if it’s translated, you wouldn’t get it," Dillie laughed proudly but was immediately sternly stopped by Lina. Following the common sense that one should never offend the healer when injured, he could only restrain his laughter and said, "Since I planned to play dead, of course, I had to make it believable, otherwise how could I have possibly fooled anyone. I didn’t expect to play it so well that you still saw through it. How did you find out?"
"Tch, this is your first time playing dead, and your skill is still far from good. Think about it, I’ve played dead many times, far more experienced than you, so of course, I could see through it easily." Noticing the hostile looks from the girls, Pannis quickly caught himself and coughed, "Ahem, anyway, I saw through your act from the beginning and just waited to watch your performance after that. It was really hard to hold back my laughter."
"So your whole body trembling was you holding in your laughter," Catherine said helplessly rubbing her forehead, "Next time you need to tell us in advance if something like this happens, you had us so worried."
"Actually, it wasn’t completely an act," Pannis shook his head, "The situation was quite dangerous then; if he truly didn’t want to survive, nobody could have brought him back, so I was really worried too, worried that he had lost the courage to live."
"Indeed, I almost didn’t come back," Dillie murmured, laying his head on the ground weakly, "I really did see the road home, and if it weren’t for the concern I had for those two kids, I would have really gone back."
"Are you sure it was the road home you saw?" Pannis said thoughtfully, "The concept of lost souls returning to their own world after death could make sense, but are you sure? Could it not have been an illusion because you so desperately wanted to go home?"
"Of course I can’t be sure," Dillie said, rolling her eyes impatiently. "But with things like this, if you don’t give it a try, you’re always left wondering. If it were you, with no other concerns, could you resist trying?"
"Alright, I admit it, I really couldn’t resist," Pannis sighed. "The temptation is just too great."
"So I was ready to just sleep through it all, but when I remembered how those two idiots cried for days after Little Green died last year, I suddenly couldn’t fall asleep," Dillie said helplessly. "I didn’t want to see them crying for days again, so I had no choice but to turn back the way I came home. But then, after all the melodramatic words I’d said, it felt too embarrassing to suddenly tell you all that, hey, I’m alive again, so I decided to just play dead and hurry you all away, then find my own way out. But who knew this bastard would suddenly try to chop me."
"That’s not right," Pannis teased. "Are you sure it’s not because you got emotional earlier and felt embarrassed about it? Heh heh, Catherine told me everything that happened while you were inside, it’s definitely what you said, that, that..."
"I’m not a tsundere," Dillie snapped, baring his teeth angrily. "I did not waver at all, nor was I embarrassed, I was behaving normally, damn it, Kyle."
"Ah, both of you masters," Catherine sighed with a headache, speaking as if soothing children. "You’re both heroes who once saved the world. Although you couldn’t prevent the opening of Death’s Gate this time, you did destroy the Divine Servant behind it, so that’s at least a partial mission accomplished. With such achievements, could you please pay a little attention to your image? Even if you must argue and ignore images, can’t you do it with a bit of dignity, and not like two children, please?"
"Hmph." Pannis and Dillie, glaring at each other, both snorted coldly, turned their heads away like two children, refusing to look at each other.
"Men are all children," Lina and Freya sighed in unison, the two young women with a unique fondness for literature exchanged glances and simultaneously shared a knowing smile. "The books are certainly not wrong."
"Since you two are so free, why not do something more serious?" Catherine said, feeling an even greater headache, weakly groaning, "Especially you, Pannis. There are still many issues in Master Fila’s letter, aren’t you planning to discuss them with Mr. Dillie?"
"Hahaha, you actually want a lion to read a letter, hahaha." Unquestionably, Pannis’s arrogant provocation received its deserved response: "Ow ow ow ow, damn lion, you bit me again, turn into a wall decoration,"
