Chapter 1208: Chapter 320: The True Face of the Gift
"Does Master Fila... really know everything?" Catherine unconsciously lowered her voice, looking around as she spoke, "Is he really always watching us?"
"Who could know that," Pannis said, pursing his lips and tossing the parchment aside, "He himself has said he’s not constantly watching. I don’t think he’s that idle. But to say he hasn’t peeked? I don’t believe that either. Time is such an interesting thing, hey Fila, are you watching now? If you are, send me a bottle of sixty-year-old Mackinway wine, I suddenly feel like drinking."
Pannis’s sudden request left the girls helpless, and of course, no one was going to bring him the wine he asked for. Pannis clicked his tongue in regret and muttered a few words of dissatisfaction under his breath before grabbing a leather water skin lying nearby, taking a swig of the strong liquor inside. Clearly, from his expression, the mere liquor couldn’t satisfy him as much as the finest wine would.
However, no one cared if he felt satisfied or not. Lina picked up the discarded parchment and reread it, resting her chin on her hand and wondering aloud, "Although I don’t know how Master Fila does it, we can now be sure that the master has not died. I’m very curious, though, about what state he’s currently in. If he truly exists, why does no one know his location? Where exactly is he? Is it now, the past, or the future?"
"Stop thinking about it. I’ve pondered those questions seriously myself before, and besides feeling my head swell, it hasn’t yielded anything," Pannis cut off Lina’s speculation and shook his head, "Perhaps he already exists in a world beyond our understanding. Just like his maid had said back then, he is beyond the bounds of time. A world far beyond our comprehension, all our guesses probably only amuse him."
"You haven’t read ’A Brief History of Time,’" Dillie huddled and licked the bandages on his belly, speaking disdainfully, "Of course you can’t comprehend Fila’s state, only those who have read that book might get a slight understanding of Fila’s current situation."
"That what what book, is it something from your world?" Pannis couldn’t understand the book title Dillie named in his native language and, with a puzzled face, hesitated before asking, "Have you read it?"
"Of course," Dillie said proudly, shaking his mane and pausing a moment before adding, "The cover."
"I can’t be bothered talking to you," Pannis rolled his eyes and spoke, "I’m an idiot to ask a lion if he’s read a book. I should’ve guessed, for a lion, even knowing he’s seen the cover is quite clever."
"Cough cough, Mr. Dillie, be careful with your wounds," Catherine coughed a few times, interrupting the two disputants, and steering the conversation, "Master Fila mentioned he has one last gift for us, delivered in two parts. Can you guess what it might be? Is it more potions? Hmm, on the way in, every couple of hours we had to drink a potion, I almost filled up on them, and they tasted terrible too. Just thinking about having to repeat that makes my stomach uneasy."
"It won’t be potions, rest assured," Pannis disagreed, shaking his head, "I used to think it might be potions, but after thinking carefully, if it were potions, he wouldn’t need to give them to us in two parts. Given his current situation, he isn’t constrained by time or limited production. So if he wanted to give us potions, he could have easily done it all at once. Therefore, if he wants to split it into two deliveries, it means it has nothing to do with potions."
"What could it be then?" Lina asked curiously, "It still helps us safely escape the most dangerous area, could it be a Teleportation Array? Hmm, probably not. I know about the restrictions in the Forest of Death."
"Indeed, it won’t be a Teleportation Array," Vivian nodded, "The leyline energy in the Forest of Death fluctuates too frequently and unpredictably. Teleportation Arrays, which require the highest stability, simply cannot operate in the Forest of Death because the magical fluctuations on both sides of the Array can’t resonate due to interference from the leyline energy. It’s impossible, unless one person can split into two halves to adjust both sides simultaneously to create a connection. Yet, more crucially, it’s also necessary to ensure that when it’s needed, the leyline energy’s fluctuation just happen to not affect the Array’s operation, but no one can guarantee such a thing. Hence, it’s common knowledge that Teleportation Arrays are unusable in the Forest of Death."
"Really impossible?" Pannis asked with a half-smile, "Are those two conditions truly unmettable? Are you sure?"
"Absolutely," Vivian felt a hint of dissatisfaction, but facing Pannis’s smile, the mage girl paused, suddenly realizing something, her eyes widening as she said, "No, it wasn’t possible before, but it’s different now. Master Fila might be able to adjust both sides at once. Since time has lost its meaning for him, being simultaneously present on both ends of the Array isn’t necessarily hard. Moreover, since he managed to place the parchment exactly where Lina would shoot it, ensuring the leyline energy’s fluctuation won’t affect the Array during our use is also easy. Yes, this must be it. If it’s Master Fila’s gift, it very likely could be a Teleportation Array. Especially since he mentioned the gifts are in two sets, probably one set links the Fortress Camp at the end of Burial Ground with the Cave Camp across Lake of Termination, and the other from the Cave Camp, though its other end isn’t defined, it must be at the edge of the Wandering Woodlands, ensuring we can leave safely and swiftly."
"But, we searched the camp thoroughly when we entered a few days ago and saw no sign of any Array," Lina started to say before suddenly seeing Catherine shake the parchment in her hand, realizing, "Right, if Master Fila can send the parchment from the future to the present, then setting up an Array shouldn’t be impossible either."
"So, it seems we can confirm now," Pannis stroked his chin and said, "That guy Fila, he’s given us a Teleportation Array, and with that, we... huh?"
Pannis’s voice suddenly halted as his gaze sharply turned towards the temple. Simultaneously, the scorpion-tailed lion’s mane bristled, growling lowly towards the direction of the temple.
The temple doors, slowly opened.
