Chapter 1135: Chapter 248 Ambush
What does light bring? Throughout history, countless poets, literary figures, and scholars have discussed this. Warmth, brightness, happiness, life, joy—countless people have countless personal answers, but no matter the answer, everyone unanimously acknowledges that light is gentle and affable. Whenever bathed in the brightness, people often sing its praises and revere it, even those who are not followers of the Lord of Light, Varunshen. However, few know that the gentle and affectionate light has another side, just like every coin has its two distinct faces. When the gentle and affectionate light grows fierce, there is only one outcome—destruction, an inescapable destruction. The raging light devours everything, destroys everything, and reduces any existence blocking its path to the most basic elements, until its own energy is exhausted, as is the fate now facing Ava in front of the mud hut.
A bright light lit up from The Third Eye on Ava’s forehead, dimming even the sun in the sky. Light Techniques extended from her forehead in a conical shape, enveloping the mud hut and the ground around it. Despite appearing sturdy and enduring decades of weather, the hut couldn’t withstand the intense light for even three seconds—it disintegrated into particles too fine for the naked eye to see, dissipating into the air. Inherited from the body of Sigein, the mightiest of the ancient Triclops, the hut and a large swath of ground vanished without a trace under the ferocious light, leaving no sign that they had ever existed, only a vast empty space remained.
Yet, this was not the end. While the ferocious light was still demonstrating its power, at the center where the light shone, a shadow suddenly broke through the remaining thin layer of earth, burrowing up from underground. Under the relentless assault of the light, the shadow roared skyward, leaping out of the light’s range. When it landed again, its stature had grown to nearly three meters tall.
With a roar, Dillie, the scorpion-tailed lion that had been following at the rear of the group, also transformed into a similar size and pounced from behind the girls, tangling with the shadow that had erupted unexpectedly. In the Yarran World, some of the top Demigod magical beasts can adjust their own size. Dillie, for instance, could shrink to the size of a pet dog when small and grow to nearly twenty meters in length; during such transformations, it seemed almost as if it was defying all biological common sense. However, such growth or shrinkage, both during the change and while maintaining it, required a huge amount of energy and a lot of the creature’s vitality every second. Therefore, magical beasts only change their size and conceal their form when it is absolutely necessary.
The next instant, both towering three-meter-tall beings had vanished, as if they had never been there, and the girls understood that the scorpion-tailed lion had pulled its foe into its own realm, to prevent the fight from affecting the outside world and possibly the girls themselves.
"There are two of them, and another one." Ava said with a cold face, her delicate and petite fingers pointing at another mud house, succinctly stating, "Over there."
However, as her finger pointed, the mud house and the ground suddenly exploded, and another dark shadow burst forth from the dirt, pouncing towards the girls like lightning. Although the two shadows moved swiftly, the girls clearly saw that they were bear-like magical beasts, likely a kind of Sharp-toothed Bear, with brown fur covering their bodies and two sharp fangs protruding from their lips, carrying a faint magical fluctuation on them. As the Sharp-toothed Bear emerged, it singled out Lina. Its sharp claws swung down from above, aiming for Lina’s head. From the bear-like magical beasts’ aura, the girls could distinctly feel the powerful pressure emanating from it. Evidently, this was a Demigod Rank magical beast. If they allowed its claws to come down, the seemingly soft paws could not only crush Lina’s skull but also the claws extending from the paws could completely tear Lina from head to belly.
However, the girls had long formed a defensive formation and were mentally prepared. As the Sharp-toothed Bear lunged, Lina and Catherine had already swapped places, and Catherine had raised her sturdy and solid Magicsteel Shield above her head, her body tensed like a bow full of force, bending to meet the attack of the Sharp-toothed Bear.
With a "bang," the sound of the impact carried a metallic clash as the massive force of the paw and claws heavily landed on the shield of the knight girl, skidding off the intentionally sloped shield surface, dissipating most of the force from the bear’s claws. But this was an attack from a Demigod Rank magical beast. Even with clever blocking techniques to deflect much of it, the remaining force was still overwhelming. The knight girl only felt the shield dip, the enormous power transferring through the shield to her arms, which slightly retracted to absorb the blow. The leftover force traveled down her curved spine, through her legs, bent and relying on a mechanism similar to goblin technology springs to store and absorb energy, finally dissipating into the ground. A full-on strike from a bear-like Demigod magical beast was not something the knight girl could withstand easily, even after several layers of force dissipation. Catherine couldn’t help but let out a muffled grunt, leaving two deep footprints where she stood, yet not retreating half a step.
The bear-like magical beast seemed quite dull, unlike the agile magical beasts the girls had encountered before. If those beasts’ attacks were thwarted, they would immediately follow up with different attacks, their movements as continuous as flowing water. However, this bear-like magical beast seemed different, operating as if it were following some programmed commands, taking two seconds after a failed attack to start its next move. But for the girls, who were already prepared with their defense, two seconds were enough to do a lot. At least it was enough time for Vivian to slam an Explosive Flame Spell into its face, scorching its bear fur pitch black. It was also sufficient for Freya to bring her crystal energy cannon close to its head, like a crystal energy gun, activating the Array to fire at its eyes, three times in a row.
Although its resilient body meant it didn’t suffer substantial damage, repeated attacks to its face must have been quite painful, yet the beast made no outcry as you would expect, as though it did not feel pain at all. After a two-second pause, it suddenly stood on its hind legs, both claws swinging down at Catherine in front of it. The knight girl raised her shield horizontally to meet the claws, her determined face guarding her companions behind her, as the claws and shield collided once more, putting her through another trial of strength. However, this time Catherine coped more easily than before, not even a grunt escaping her lips, because she was not fighting alone—she had her teammates behind her.
As the claws swung down, a diminutive figure darted out closely beside Catherine’s waist, leaping into the air, with her golden hair flying wildly as both her slender fists, one following the other, met the monstrous claws head-on. Within the adventure team, no one dared underestimate the power of Ava’s fists. The physical strength of the Triclops tribe was terrifying, and even Pannis admitted that in terms of sheer power without using Aggression, Ava was not weaker than him. Of course, limited by the gap in overall strength, the girl’s force could not contend with the Demigod magical beast. Thus when Ava threw her punches at the magical beast’s paw pads, she was sent flying by the tremendous force, tumbling a few times in the air before staggering back behind Catherine. However, the girl’s punches at least reduced the force of the Sharp-toothed Bear’s attack by a quarter.
Apart from Ava, there was also Lina. Just before the collision, a piece of rock suddenly emerged from the ground in front of Catherine, rising higher than the knight maiden herself, perfectly blocking the path of the Sharp-toothed Bear’s swipe. Unfortunately, the hastily summoned rock was not strong enough to completely block the bear claw, and the bear easily shattered the boulder as if it were merely made of mud.
However, after two consecutive obstructions, the power behind the bear’s swipe had been reduced to its minimum. Even when both paws crashed down on the Magicsteel Shield, they didn’t affect Catherine in the slightest. Not only that, but Catherine even managed to spare the effort to thrust her sword from the side of the shield, leaving a shallow wound on the fur at the bear’s waist.
The Sharp-toothed Bear only paused for a second before it ferociously opened its huge mouth; a glow from the mana on its fangs gleamed on both sides, clearly indicating its intent to use a magic attack after two ineffective physical attempts. However, the girls were never to find out what kind of magic it intended to use, as suddenly, a one-handed sword appeared from behind the Sharp-toothed Bear, emerging from the void, piercing up along its spine and into the brain.
Naturally accompanying the appearance of the one-handed sword was Pannis. After leaving her domain, Pannis’s first action was not to greet the girls but to swing her longsword, imbued with Aggression, cutting the massive corpse of the Sharp-toothed Bear into several pieces, while simultaneously spitting a syllable towards Vivian, "Burn."
The Mage girl understood instantly, her hands swiftly moving to shatter six crystal vials around the carcass of the Sharp-toothed Bear. Her fingers traced several runes in the air, and a wave of scorching flames immediately engulfed the bear’s body, filling the air with the smell of charred meat. It was only after drawing the last rune that the Mage girl, with a frown, asked, "Is it the same as what we encountered near Icebound Town? A magical beast that underwent Undead Transformation?"
"Yeah, or rather, it’s even worse than that," Pannis nodded. "These two could almost be categorized directly as Living Corpses, no, not even living - Semi-living Corpses."
"What about Mr. Dillie?" Catherine noticed that Dillie had not yet emerged from his domain and asked with concern, "He doesn’t know, does he?"
"If he can’t handle a single Sharp-toothed Bear, he might as well stop being a magical beast and turn into food," Pannis shrugged. "As for the body, don’t worry about that either. Although I’ve never entered that fellow’s domain... every body that he’s pulled into his domain and then released, they’re usually charred and mangled. I’ve never seen a single intact body. I don’t know what kind of horrifying scenes are in his domain."
"Huh?" Lina suddenly remembered something and asked in surprise, "Isn’t Mr. Dillie a magical beast? How can he use a domain?"
"You’re just thinking of that now?" Pannis gazed dumbfounded at Lina’s profile, unable to help rolling her eyes.
