Chapter 1134: Chapter 247 They Are Right Here
"I’ve checked the surveillance records, and within the past fifteen days, no moving objects have entered the third camp of the expedition team," Ava said coldly. "I’m continuing to fast-forward through the footage, but this will take more time."
"It’s fine, everyone is prepared for battle at any moment, we’ll just proceed simultaneously," Catherine comforted, caressing Ava’s smooth golden hair. "You’ve done very well already. It took them four days to travel a route you led us through in less than a day. Your contribution to this mission is no less significant than when Pannis planned to break through six territories of magical beasts in one day. Everyone is really grateful to you, there’s just no need to say it out loud."
"I was just stating the situation, not blaming myself," the mechanical girl said with narrowed eyes, seemingly enjoying Catherine’s stroking. Though her words sounded distant, her voice and tone became hazier due to the comfort she felt. This incongruently indifferent statement, spoken in such a voice, didn’t make the listeners uncomfortable. Instead, it created an interesting feeling and even left some enchanted – of course, such individuals were few, like a certain drooling scorpion-tailed lion."
Dee’s eyes sparkled as he followed behind the girls, his drool almost spilling from the corners of his mouth. His eager eyes fixed on Ava’s back, muttering incomprehensible words: "This is fantastic, truly fantastic. A tsundere mechanical girl is just too delightful. Ah, if she could also wear cat ears and meow... Ahhh, I can’t take it. It’s like combining all the elements."
"Hey, are you a pervert?" Pannis kicked Dillie’s butt, looking down at the roaring scorpion-tailed lion with disdain. "Just look at your expression, it’s downright lewd. You’re going overboard, even worse than me. Be careful or Ava might get drunk, go berserk, and pluck you bald."
"Damn it, I am not a pervert," Dillie retorted with wide eyes. "Loving lolitas is sacred. Using the word ’pervert’ to describe it is a desecration to lolita lovers all over the world. Apologize to them! No, that’s not right, I’m not a lolita lover, definitely not. I am quite normal."
"So tell me, what exactly does lolita lover mean?" Pannis asked, confused. "You’ve mentioned this term several times before, I remember you said it when we first met."
"It’s none of your business; even if I told you, you wouldn’t understand," Dillie suddenly seemed deflated, with drooping ears and tail, muttering despondently: "Loneliness... a life without one’s own kind is so full of loneliness."
"Although logically, I should assume you’re lamenting the absence of other scorpion-tailed lions or creatures like you and offer sympathy," Pannis said, glancing skeptically at Dillie. "But my instinct tells me that’s not what you mean, and the same instinct tells me to keep my distance from you right now, or else I might end up corrupted like that little green swindler. Once something has been changed by you, it’s too late for regrets."
"Tch, that’s why I find you overly perceptive guys the least likable," Dillie grumbled, shaking the mane around his neck: "I can’t be bothered to explain to someone so vulgar; you could never understand our love."
"Thank goodness for that, I have no desire to understand," Pannis said, slapping away the tail that was swaying in his face. "If you’re that bored, only knowing to drool over Ava, go find something to do, like scouting the camp. If there are any enemies lying in ambush, they can attack you, and we’ll be safe."
"Damn it, why don’t you go?" Dillie roared in dissatisfaction. "Your scouting skills are so much better than mine, why should I be the one to scout?"
"You run fast, oh, I mean, you can fly," Pannis barely used his brain to come up with a reason as he leisurely spoke, ignoring the threatening bare fangs of Dillie: "And you are a magical beast, isn’t hunting prey your instinct? It’s impossible that your scouting skills are worse than mine. You’re probably just too lazy to do it and making excuses."
"Damn it, I think you are the one too lazy to go. Watch it, or I’ll eat you in one bite," Dillie fumed, his wings standing on end as he opened his mouth wide in anger: "I am the most fearsome magical beast, do you fear me, the beast that could swallow you whole with one bite, roar!"
"Isn’t that perfect then? Since you’re a magical beast, go scout. Isn’t that common sense in an adventure?" Pannis shrugged with a smile. "If necessary, to prevent you from getting lost, we can tie a rope around you and lead you from behind."
"I’m a scorpion-tailed lion, not a damn dog. Besides, dogs aren’t magical beasts, I am a magical beast, get it?" Dillie roared angrily. "You asshole, I’ll really eat you up."
"Thud." The fist of justice finally landed on the head of the perpetrator. Pannis cradled his head, listening to Catherine’s scolding with grievance, "You, always picking on Mr. Dillie for no good reason. Mr. Dillie kindly joined us on this adventure, and yet you keep provoking him to anger."
"Hahaha, I’m just afraid he’ll get bored, you know?" Pannis chuckled awkwardly. "Look, as we’ve traveled, nobody really talks; we’re all focused on our surroundings. A dummy like him surely can’t stay idle without getting bored, so I was just... hey hey hey, cool it, cool it, okay, I was wrong. I admit it was me who was bored, I won’t dare to do it again."
"Hahahahahaha, serves you right." The scorpion-tailed lion laughed uproariously, boasting, "Even an idiot like you has his day, hahaha, foolish humans, take that, the punch of justice! Haha, I can’t handle it, for the next several decades, this joke will keep me alive. Dammit, you kicked me again, I’m gonna fight you for real this time."
"Ugh, my head hurts." Catherine sighed deeply, at a loss for how to even comment on the two idiots now tangled up in a fight again. She could only shrug helplessly and wave to the girls, ignoring the two fools and heading towards the campsite not far away.
"Hey, wait for us." The brawling idiots noticed in time that the girls were leaving and exchanged a furious glance before hastily chasing after them.
The construction of the third camp was almost identical to the second, perhaps because they weren’t attacked the previous night, which led the former expedition team to believe this camp design could effectively defend against enemies. Consequently, they fully replicated the old camp; the only difference was there were nearly twice as many mud-made houses in the camp. This certainly wasn’t because the team had doubled in size overnight; rather, because living in completely opaque rooms, it was difficult for enemies outside to determine if anyone was in the rooms, let alone identify who might be inside. Therefore, if someone wanted to carry out targeted assassinations or raids, the difficulty significantly increased, no longer as easy as the first night’s easy assault. Moreover, compared to the last campsite, the buildings inside the third camp were better preserved, with only a third collapsed, and the remaining two-thirds were still firmly standing, some even still habitable. One couldn’t help but marvel at the special way buildings were constructed in the Western Wasteland of the Neville Federation.
"Ava, where were those two skeletons when they were setting up camp?" Pannis stopped messing around and asked with a frown when it came to serious matters. "I figure they must have circled ahead by now. The situation clearly doesn’t favor them much at the moment, and I don’t think they’re dumb enough to just foolishly follow us. Instead of keeping an eye on them, it’s better to slowly drain their energy, wait for them to let their guard down, thinking the attack was just a fluke, and then launch a sudden second strike."
"Indeed, they haven’t continued to tail us. They’re no longer in this area of the Shattered Space. As for their exact location, the system cannot predict," Ava stated flatly. "Regarding your subsequent speculation, there’s no solid evidence to support it, unable to make a logical judgment."
"No problem, just confirming they haven’t kept trailing us is enough." Pannis nodded, seemingly convinced by his own guess. Surveying the campsite, which was at least a third larger than the previous one, he stroked his chin, "Let’s first check the safety precautions, do a quick sweep of each room."
"Yes, safety first," Catherine nodded, gesturing, and including Pannis, the adventure team’s six members quickly formed a defensive exploration formation. The five girls were on defense and Pannis primarily handled the exploration, not giving any potential enemies a chance.
"The camp seems to have no trace of living creatures or Undead." As the defensive formation made its way around the perimeter of the campsite’s rooms, spiraling inward, Pannis roamed outside of the defensive formation, periodically slipping in and out of the rooms he passed by. After exploring each room, he would leave a few scratch marks on the door as a sign. After several rounds and having explored most of the rooms, Pannis said with a puzzled expression, "But I still feel like something has been here recently, although time has erased the traces and I can’t find any concrete evidence."
"I’ve found something," Ava, who had been maintaining synchronization with the Central Controller, suddenly brightened, yet her voice remained flat. "Thirty-eight days ago, a moving object entered this campsite and has not left since then. Their location..."
Before Ava could finish, The Third Eye had already opened, and a surging, dazzling light burst forth from the eye on her forehead, illuminating a room they hadn’t gotten the chance to explore yet. Amid the light came the rest of her unfinished sentence, "is right here."
