Chapter 1093: Chapter 206: Twisted Shadows

It was hard to describe what exactly those things were. Generally speaking, they were merely clumps of shadows without any form or height, existing solely as flat entities on the ground. Any object on the ground could effortlessly pass through them as if they didn’t exist at all. As for the shape of the shadows, that too was indescribable because they constantly changed, like a blob of mud being continuously kneaded, always ready to change their shape—elongated, circular, elliptical, polygonal, and countless other shapes too difficult to name. Sometimes, they resembled a person, at other times an animal, but most often they resembled nothing at all, just a jumbled mess of distorted shadows.

"Is this what you mentioned before we came in?" Catherine quickly stepped forward, positioning everyone behind her, with Falcon Shield facing the direction of these shadows and her back to Pannis she asked, "Is this what Twisted Souls look like?"

"This is just one of the forms." Pannis sighed and casually patted Ava’s head saying, "Bring the light closer; it will lessen some energy fluctuations and avoid attracting these things from afar."

"Oh." Ava, with an expressionless face, responded and then shortened the ten-meter-long beam of light to three meters. After controlling the distance of the light beam, the girl softly asked, "Did I attract them here?"

"No, it’s just our bad luck." Pannis shrugged nonchalantly, "They just happened to be here, and we ran into them. No one could have predicted this, so it has nothing to do with what you did. I asked you to reduce the energy fluctuations to avoid attracting more, since these creatures inherently chase after energy, and once they come, they come in droves."

"They are coming towards us," Lina whispered, pointing at the group of shadows, "How must a soul be twisted to turn into such an ugly form? They are merely shadows, but looking at their bizarre shapes sends chills down your spine. If the soul knew before dying that it would become this distorted, it certainly wouldn’t dare to come here. Hmm, Pannis, if we end up assimilated by these things, we won’t turn into this, will we?"

"That kind of question... you’re asking the wrong person. I’m not omnipotent like Weston; how could I possibly have an answer for you?" Pannis said with a bitter smile of helplessness, "But we have discussed the true nature of these twisted shadows before.

"True nature?" The girls instinctively looked up to the sky, trying to find the source casting these shadows, but above them was only a dense fog obstructing their view, making it impossible for any shadows to be cast.

"Uh, you misunderstood, not that kind of true nature, but rather their identities and forms before they became distorted." The crawling of the twisted shadows was very slow, and within two minutes, they had only closed the distance by four meters between them and the girls. Thus, Pannis had plenty of time to speak leisurely, "The Forbidden Land of Living Souls is filled with countless Twisted Souls existing in different forms, and these twisted shadows are the most common and easiest to deal with. Our hypothesis is that the twisted shadows are souls that have been distorted for the longest and to the deepest extent. They have lost all fragments of memories from their lives, the core consciousness of their souls, and even the most fundamental self at the depths of their souls. Some scholars who study souls say that this fundamental self in the depths determines the state of the soul, like Annie’s current state, which is a reflection of her inner self. Hence, once a soul loses its fundamental self, it no longer knows in what form it should exist, leading to what you see now."

"They might not be a single soul at all," Dillie, also seeing Twisted Souls for the first time, remained calm and conjectured, "I guess although they’ve lost their self, they still retain the most primitive life imprints. After losing their self and their defined physical forms, they entangled with each other, merged into one, and then split into many, which is why they continually change shape. Most of these shapes are probably the individual shapes of each entity from before they died."

"Haven’t you never been here before?" Pannis asked curiously, "Why do you seem so familiar with it?"

"Tsk, just speculating based on what we see." Dillie said disdainfully, "In my hometown, you could make a ton of similar speculations on a whim; the imagination is terrifying. Otherwise, how do you think Curlee and I come up with our stories? Besides, what you’re discussing is just speculation too, only you have more information than me, and maybe a slightly better chance of being accurate."

"Well, you’re right, we are also just guessing after all; no one knows the real truth," Pannis nodded and continued, "but those truths aren’t important right now. We aren’t here to conduct research."

"How strong are their attacks?" Catherine was most concerned about safety and pressed, "They do seem very slow. What about their offensive and defensive abilities? Do they have any weaknesses?"

"Actually, I was hesitant to tell you all this before we entered, but their types are too chaotic and bizarre. So in the end, I didn’t go into detail. I planned to explain them to you one by one as we encounter them," Pannis explained, "We call this one Twisted Shadows. They are the most numerous but theoretically the easiest to deal with because they basically have no offensive or defensive capabilities."

"What do you mean?" Not only Catherine, but everyone, including Dillie, was taken aback. The scorpion-tailed lion asked quizzically, scratching its head, "What do you mean by no offensive or defensive power?"

"Does your shadow have offensive and defensive capabilities?" Pannis retorted, "You can’t attack a shadow, and a shadow can’t attack you either. That’s why I say there are no such capabilities."

"Then why are we wasting time here?" Dillie exclaimed, eyes wide, "Can’t we just walk past it?"

"It won’t attack us, but it will affect us. Want to try? Short contact won’t be dangerous, just a bit uncomfortable," Pannis said, seeing Catherine nodding, then led her to stand in the path of the advancing Twisted Shadow, "Stand here, and you’ll see what I mean immediately."

Catherine held the Falcon Shield in front of her, her palms sweaty with tension. Unlike Lina, who was driven by curiosity, she felt it necessary to test the danger of the Twisted Shadow. Although Pannis mentioned there was no danger, the knight girl still wanted to experience it firsthand.

The Twisted Shadow slowly writhed; the Falcon Shield couldn’t block an entity that had no physical form. The Twisted Shadow passed unimpeded through the defense of the Falcon Shield and touched Catherine’s feet.
