Chapter 1094: Chapter 207 Fragments of Memory
The knight girl kept a tense watch on the distorted shadows that were drawing ever closer. Just as the shadows overlapped with her feet, she suddenly saw a bright light; she found herself hundreds of meters in the air, plummeting rapidly towards the ground. Inside, she felt an inexplicable surge of joy and anticipation. The howling of the wind echoed in her ears. Even though she was hundreds of meters apart, she could still clearly see a medium-sized prairie cow running frantically on the rapidly approaching ground.
In the next instant, darkness fell before the girl’s eyes, and she found herself no longer in the vast skies but in a narrow burrow, frantically running forward. Glancing back, she saw countless mice scurrying along the tunnel, and from the darkness at the end of the tunnel came the roars of wild beasts. The strange roars made Catherine feel a soul-shaking fear, as if it were the most terrifying entity in the world.
Time seemed to have passed in just a moment, but Catherine felt as though she had undergone several transformations: she had been a wolf, howling madly at the moon; a bear, lazily dozing under a tree; the nightblade leopard, a hunter in the shadows, and even a person in a blue robe of unknown identity.
A strong force came from behind, and Catherine staggered backwards, as if she had just awoken from a nightmare, her face covered in sweat and her breathing as rapid as a bellows. Although the knight girl had escaped the twisted shadow’s grasp, she appeared disoriented, as if she didn’t know who she was or where she was.
"Sister, wake up," Lina’s voice reached Catherine’s ears, "Sister, come to your senses, what happened? Did you see something? Focus."
"Ah, Lina, I’m okay," Catherine came out of her daze, gently pushing away the priestess girl who was shaking her shoulders forcefully, and fiercely slapped her own cheeks. Her eyes still slightly vacant, she said, "Is this what you mentioned, the effect they would have on us?"
"That’s right, how was it, an interesting experience, right?" Pannis nodded and said, "Such an experience is something most people will never have the chance to encounter in their lifetime. It’s only in the Forbidden Land of Living Souls that one can have such an experience."
"Are you talking in riddles?" The frustration of unsatisfied curiosity was evident in the young priestess’s voice, "Sister, are you really fine? What experience is so interesting? Can I try it too?"
"Hmm, my head hurts a bit," Catherine shook her head and said, "I just saw many fragments from memories and experienced the perspectives and feelings of many different creatures. Only now do I understand that in the eyes of some creatures, the world is black and white, and in the eyes of others, the world is a patchwork of red, green, and black. I must admit, the feeling is indeed hard to forget. However, I wouldn’t recommend you try it. While it certainly doesn’t have any substantive impact, it does take a toll on the psyche. I still can’t quite concentrate, and right after waking up, I couldn’t even be sure what creature I was, let alone be certain whether everything I saw and heard, including you shaking me, was still just a memory of some creature."
"The influence of the Twisted Shadows is just like that; it projects memory fragments that still linger deep within their souls in a dissociated state directly into your mind, resulting in you sharing their memories," Pannis explained. "However, this is also one of the most headache-inducing problems with the Twisted Shadows. Although their influence doesn’t cause physical harm, it can disturb a person’s mental state, making them..."
"Ahhh~~~~," Lina’s cry of alarm came through. The priestess girl, having heard Catherine say they could give it a try and Pannis not expressing any objection, let her curiosity drive her, not even finishing listening to the rest and dashed straight to the front of the Twisted Shadows, stepping right in. The moment she touched the Twisted Shadows, her expression also became dazed, but because she was prepared, she forcefully retreated after a few seconds, bending over with her hands on her knees, gasping for breath, and said, "Blessings of Denia, the impact of this experience is quite strong. If possible, I wouldn’t want to go through it again for the rest of my life."
"However, that’s simply not possible," Pannis shook his head and said, "You’ll understand when the time comes. The number of Twisted Shadows is too many; it’s impossible to truly avoid them. They will hide in groups in every corner, sticking to you when you’re not paying attention, giving you an experience you’ll never forget. It’s a difficult thing to avoid. Also, don’t think that just because nothing major happened this time, the Twisted Shadows don’t pose much harm to us; that’s just an illusion."
"An illusion? Is it not like that in reality?" Catherine couldn’t sit still anymore and reproachfully said, with mixed laughter and tears, "You should’ve said so earlier so we could have been prepared mentally. And now you tell us at this point that they might have a deadly impact. Let’s all keep our distance then, and not get any closer."
"There’s no problem for now, I mean it will be dangerous when their numbers increase," Pannis said seriously, "Such Twisted Souls ultimately aim to assimilate their targets into the same twisted state as themselves. Although the Twisted Shadows don’t have enough power to do that, prolonged exposure can still seriously interfere with everyone’s self-recognition. You all understand, once self-recognition is completely confused, a person collapses, with no possibility of recovery, and that’s the most terrifying aspect of the Twisted Shadows. We once witnessed a giant lizard that had strayed into the Wandering Woods, surrounded by a mass of Twisted Shadows numbering in the tens of thousands. Those shadows wrapped around it like skin, and in not much time, the lizard was twisted, not only losing its life but also joining the ranks of the wanderers."
Pannis’s words sent a chill down everyone’s spines, and as the girls imagined themselves enveloped by tens of thousands of Twisted Shadows, they felt nothing but despair.
"So, we better leave this place as soon as possible," Pannis clapped his hands, drawing everyone’s attention, "They should have a certain enemy detection range. As long as we leave that range, they won’t continue chasing after us. So as long as we keep moving, we won’t find ourselves in the uncomfortable position of being surrounded by a large number of Twisted Shadows."
"How far is their enemy detection range roughly?" Catherine inquired.
"Specific numbers maybe someone knows, but it’s definitely not me," Pannis said with regret, "We’ve only hurriedly come in here two or three times, so there’s too much we haven’t been able to test."
