Chapter 1018: Chapter 133 Girls’ Preparations
"We need to prepare this as well; it should be available for purchase at the Elven Royal Court." The lively banquet had already ended, and those Demigods didn’t look at all as if they were setting out for the Forest of Death the very next day. Each appeared to be at ease, drinking and chatting as usual, playfully teasing one another, just like any other day. For them, the Forest of Death, though dangerous, wasn’t as mysterious as most people believed, and they didn’t need to venture deep inside. Their mission was simply to escort the expedition team to the fringe of the meandering forest on the outskirts of the Forest of Death, so naturally, daily life didn’t vary much. However, it was different for the girls—it was their first time entering the Forest of Death, and they were headed for its rarely seen Core Area. Even someone as disciplined as Catherine couldn’t keep herself asleep. Thus, despite the late hour, the girls were still gathered in Catherine’s room, meticulously listing the supplies they needed to prepare for the next day. The knightly girl looked down at her paper and spoke as she wrote, "I’ve reviewed the Guild’s records, and for us Legend Rank professionals who can’t maintain solidified Shields, the greatest enemy in the Forest of Death isn’t the fierce magical beasts lurking in the shadows but the omnipresent tiny mosquitoes that are easily overlooked. The climate of the Forest of Death is practically paradise for mosquitoes. Don’t be fooled by them being mere animals, not even magical beasts; they live off blood, and what’s critical is once bitten by them, one could contract many strange diseases, leading to a loss of fighting ability. Even with Lina’s Disease Removal Spell for treatment, many diseases can only be alleviated and not completely cured without long-term multiple treatments. In a place like the Forest of Death, losing the ability to fight means I need not spell out the consequence. So, we must amply prepare these anti-insect potions and tools and also medications for treating common diseases. Although we’ve brought some, the Elves who have lived here all along are more familiar with the diseases of the forest than we are; it’s safer to buy some from them."
"It’s a good thing we bought a set of insect repellent devices from Rachel and Nicole in the past," Vivian said, no longer in the mood to retreat into her own world. She dug through her huge backpack, struggling to pull out a few components and lay them on the table, then carefully wiped them down, "I’d only thought it might be useful someday, and now it turns out we really have an occasion to use it. But this machine consumes a lot of energy; it uses up a Crystal worth a thousand Tael every two hours of operation. If used continuously, big sister, will it not break your heart?"
"Use it. Of course, use it, why not?" Catherine ground her teeth and fervently said, "Money can be earned back, but life can’t. Once it’s gone, everything is gone. So, whether it’s two hours for a thousand Tael or even five thousand Tael, we must use it. I would not want to save money on Crystals only to have someone lose their life due to a mosquito bite."
"Haha, big sister, your expression is really funny when you say that," Lina covered her mouth and leaned on the table, laughing as she pointed at Catherine, "You look like you’re about to eat the insect repellent device."
"Shut your mouth," Catherine gently tapped the priest girl’s somewhat prickly bald head and rolled her eyes, "And you, have Vivian prepare more potions for curing diseases along with yours. Otherwise, if we run low on mana later, we’re in trouble. Hmm, and Vivian, also prepare more of the basic hemostatic potions. We don’t need to buy those—we can save a bit of gold, and having potions made by you gives us peace of mind. Also, Lina, especially you, be extra careful out there. Make sure to control your Curiosity, don’t..."
"Oh no, big sister is nagging again," Lina lay sprawled on the table, clutching her bald head and wailing with laughter, "Freya, come save me! Only you can stop big sister with your ways now."
"I’m not bothering with you," Freya, who was sitting on the bed because the space between the armrests of the chair provided in the guest room was too small, was polishing a backpack full of components and didn’t even lift her eyelids in response to Lina’s plea, she sneered, "She’s talking to you, not me, the one curious about everything is you, not me. Just listen up, I won’t intervene."
In the room, the girls, feeling the tension and anticipation, tried to mask their nervousness with their laughter and banter while preparing for their departure. Outside, silence enveloped the night. The faint chorus of insects echoed from deep within the foliage, and occasionally the startled flapping of wings from nocturnal birds accentuated the friction of leaves in the depths of the night.
"Crack, crack." Not far from Catherine’s room, a series of subtle yet crisp snapping sounds arose in the quiet night, a shadow lay on a slender branch, and the clear sounds were coming from its mouth. Due to the dim light, it was hard to make out the exact movements of the shadow, but it was probably tossing some dried nuts into its mouth and gently crushing them, the monotonous crunching noises, though monotone, felt strangely comforting in the darkness of the night.
"Why am I lying here?" A delicate floral scent suddenly enveloped the shadow, and before anyone knew it, the Elf Queen was already sitting on a branch opposite Pannis, asking in a low and magnetic voice, "Why don’t you go inside and prepare with them? Aren’t you the most worried about them?"
"They can manage quite well on their own; my presence inside makes no difference." The shadow, Pannis, spit out the shell of the nut and said, propping his head on his hands, "I’m just reminiscing about the feeling before such important events."
"The feeling from the nights before our expedition years ago?" Fula spoke softly, "But it should be quite different."
"Indeed, it’s not exactly the same, but there are similarities," Pannis sighed and continued, "Actually, I really shouldn’t have let them go with us."
"Why is that?" Fula asked, "Is it for their safety?"
"It’s not about safety," Pannis said with a self-mocking smile, "This is a matter for our generation, we shouldn’t involve them. This war belongs to the past, and they belong to the present and the future. The more I’m with them, the less I want to put the burdens of the past on their shoulders. It’s not fair to them."
"You’re wrong, Kyle." Regardless of whether Pannis could see her, Fula still shook her head, "Maybe because you’re too close to them, or because you are one of the people involved, sometimes, you don’t understand their thoughts, you can’t see as clearly as we do."
