Chapter 1019: Chapter 134 I Saw It
"I know what you’re thinking, you believe that the three moribund beings’ existence is a disaster we left behind in the past, and it is precisely because of them that the possibility for the Second Undead War to erupt has arisen. Thus, you feel it is your responsibility to thoroughly resolve this problem without leaving anything behind, and not like last time, allowing them the chance to carry out any plans again, right? Ha, you don’t want them to bear this responsibility for the same reason," Flare shook her head, "But you are forgetting one thing, the Yarran World is not yours alone, nor is it mine; it belongs to all of us. What gives you the right to assume the responsibility that belongs to the entire Yarran World, to everyone, on your own shoulders? Even if we don’t consider whether it’s fair to you, have you not thought about how unfair it is to deprive them of their right to contribute their strength to the Yarran World?"
"It’s not just for that reason, Your Majesty," Pannis slowly sat up, holding his head in his hands, his voice as low and hoarse as though it could break at any moment, "Indeed, this is not a war that belongs to them, it is my responsibility, because..."
"Because of Nellie, right?" Flare’s green eyes shimmered faintly in the darkness, her clear gaze resting on Pannis’s face, her voice as soft as whispers carried in the midnight air, "You believe it has something to do with Nellie, so from the very start, you hoped to resolve the issue alone, not even wanting Dillie to follow along."
"Yes, it has to do with Nellie," Pannis let out a deep sigh, his head bowed so that no one could see his face clearly, "You’ve guessed it, have you? I thought I was the only one who knew."
"Everyone has a brain, Kyle, and everyone thinks. To reach the level of a Demigod, no one’s intellect falls far behind others," Flare said, shaking her head in resignation, "Those who experienced that war first-hand and truly care about it, after understanding the general clues, would all come to the same conclusion. It’s not that easy to revive Danacus; he’s merely a Divine Soul, and an incomplete one at that. His divine body has already crumbled. Resurrection would require reshaping the body. However, reshaping a body is a lengthy process, certainly not something that can be completed in just a little over a hundred years. Therefore, after ruling out that possibility, the only reasonable option left is the body of a Demigod. Although not equal to a divine body, after being transformed by Divine Power, the gap would not be too wide, thus Danacus likely used Nellie’s body to resurrect. Facing Danacus would be the same as facing Nellie, at least that is what it would seem from the outside."
"This is why I say, this is my war," Pannis’s voice was hoarse and dry, he spoke with difficulty, "At that time, because of me, Nellie was forced to bind the Divine Soul with her own body, only then could she inflict a heavy blow on Danacus to force him back into slumber. One could say Danacus’s chance at revival was completely my own doing."
"To those who don’t know better, hearing you talk would make them think we could have easily defeated Danacus back then. But in reality, we clearly had no means at all, including Mina; no one was capable of inflicting effective harm on Danacus," Flare said with a light laugh and a sigh, "Moreover, in the end, he rushed at us, seeking to take over a body. Nellie made her own choice, she faced him head-on willingly. Under such circumstances, to insist it was all your doing seems a bit far-fetched."
"But the one who should have been possessed was supposed to be me," Pannis punched a tree branch heavily, his teeth clenched as he said, "Danacus initially charged at me. I should have been the one to die, but I..."
"I saw everything, you know," Flare pressed down on the tree branch, leaped next to Pannis, and after sitting back down, she gently patted his back, "I saw everything that happened at the time."
"You..." Pannis’s muscles suddenly became extremely stiff, his teeth nearly chattering. The secret buried in his heart, which he dared not to speak of, was unexpectedly revealed without warning, filling him with bewilderment. All he could do was mutter in a daze, "You said... you saw everything?"
"Yes, I saw it," Flare said, leaning against Pannis’s shoulder. Her warm body temperature and the faint scent of flowers gradually relaxed his tensed body. The queen spoke in a softer tone: "I lied to everyone. I told everyone who asked that I didn’t see anything just like them, but you must understand that at that time, my gaze couldn’t have been anywhere but on you. So, I saw clearly what happened, including every expression and action of you and Nellie in succession. At first, I was surprised by your reaction, but after considering it from your perspective, I understood. Many things are easy to say, but when faced with them personally, it’s always hard to control one’s instinctive reactions. It’s not your fault."
"Heh, there’s no need to comfort me, this is my sin," Pannis finally regained his usual relaxed demeanor, "They gave me courage, allowing me to dare to confront my past, to have the courage to atone for past wrongs personally. That’s why my initial hope was to deal with it by myself, as a way to put an end to my past."
"But that’s not what they hoped for. They wish to have your present, they long to step into your past, and though they had no chance to be part of what happened then, at least now, at least when you confront the past, they hope to be by your side," Flare said with a bitter smile. "I’m really envious of them. If I had the chance, I’d truly wish to be the one freely roaming the realm of the living, not them. Sadly, that’s just a fantasy. In reality, I can only stay in the Elven Royal Court, watching you face the past with them. Ah, these things, I really shouldn’t be saying, I should be their enemy, after all."
"Heh, I also find it strange when you say these things." Pannis didn’t play dumb as he did in front of the young girls, shaking his head, he said, "You’ve been calling them enemies for the past few days, but you never acted like an enemy. Instead, you seem more like an ally."
"Can’t help it, because I sense a crisis," Flare said after a moment of silence, her bright eyes intently staring at the profile of Pannis’s face, she whispered, "Have you ever considered the possibility that Nellie might still be alive, or at least, her consciousness hasn’t completely vanished?"
"I haven’t thought about it, not at all," Pannis couldn’t help but raise his voice, almost shouting his response: "That’s impossible."
"What’s wrong?" In the cabin, Catherine quickly poked her head out of the window, but all she saw was Pannis sitting on a tree branch while Flare had already vanished into the night, leaving only the faint scent of flowers and a few soft chuckles. The knight girl looked curiously at Pannis and asked with confusion, "What happened? What are you yelling about?"
"It’s nothing, just a nightmare. You all should rest early too. Get ready for tomorrow, we’re setting out at dawn the day after," Pannis said calmly, but in a place no one could see, his tightly clenched fist and the palm pierced and bleeding from his own fingernails, vividly betrayed the turmoil within his inner world.
