Chapter 1017: Chapter 132: Kyle’s Achievements
Short-lived races always tend to be forgetful, and humans are the epitome of this, with the situation in the Yarran World over a hundred years ago being clear only to the high leaders of each human force due to classified documents. This current generation of humans has largely forgotten, as it all happened several generations ago, making it normal to not remember. However, some descriptions of that era still vaguely remain in historical documents and some literary works.
Long ago, the newly established Neville Federation and the royal Falar Empire, both human powers, possessed a vigorous heart for expansion. Although the territories and resources they already owned were more than sufficient to satisfy all their citizens’ needs, they still incessantly pursued expansion. Not only did the two great human nations continue to engage in localized wars in what used to be the Neutral Land, but they also constantly experienced friction with neighboring powers. It can be said that from the Fourth Epoch onwards, all races gradually began to put aside their historic hatred and strove for peace, with large-scale wars becoming increasingly rare. Even the Beastmen, who worshipped the War Deity, tried to suppress their inherently warlike nature. Only humans, the forgetful race, remained enthusiastic about slaughtering each other.
It was not until the Zeus Declaration took effect, cutting off all geographical connections between the Falar Empire and the Neville Federation, that the avenues for mutual aggression between the two great human nations were fundamentally severed. Deprived of their excuses for mutual slaughter, over the next two hundred years, both nations repeatedly attempted small-scale invasions against the nearby racial powers, hoping to gradually encroach upon neighboring territories. However, the strength of the nearby races was not weak, and all attempts at invasion failed.
Though the invasions were unsuccessful, they caused other races to always regard humans with distrust. Although this was much better compared to the intense hostility of five hundred years ago when races were very hostile towards humans, international interactions gradually increased. Still, no one wanted to truly believe in the human race. With matters involving humans, people were always extra cautious, especially with more significant issues. Any proposal put forth by humans was always approached with utmost caution.
"It was only when Kyle and Nellie appeared that we, the races other than humans, saw that such individuals could exist among humans," Fula said, her eyes misty with nostalgia. "Although there were those who befriended humans before, most humans had various shortcomings. Of course, it must be acknowledged that not only humans, but all intelligent beings inherently have their flaws. However, due to past reasons, these shortcomings were artificially magnified in humans, creating what is known as prejudice. Dillie, what was that phrase you used?"
"An initial impression about something always tends to dominate a person’s perception, and changing it afterward is very difficult," remarked the scorpion-tailed lion, lying on its designated chair and spearing a piece of mushroom pie with its barbed tail before putting it in its mouth. It murmured, "Such a hassle, don’t keep asking me these things in the future; I am not an encyclopedia."
"Yes, that’s the idea," Fula continued, ignoring Dillie’s complaint. "Because of the initially poor impression of humans, even accepting an individual human became difficult to truly trust the entire human race. No, actually, it was even difficult for an individual to be accepted by other races. But Kyle and Nellie were different. Kyle was flawless, almost a paragon of virtue, and Nellie always sincerely thought of others first. Their simultaneous existence was like a Deity’s favor to humanity. Because they constantly engaged sincerely with members of our races, the initial impressions we had slowly faded, and we began to genuinely believe what humans said."
"That is a difficult task, especially for us Dwarves," said the Mountain Dwarf, wiping the sticky liquor from his beard with a heavily accented nasal tone. "Back then, our race had the most distant relations with humans; it was almost unheard of for any of our people to befriend a human. Kyle indeed changed our minds. In the end, a single letter from him was enough to send Mr. Klarke of the Gold Family on a nearly suicidal mission."
"So, during the First Undead War, were the races still unwilling to form a united army with humans?" Catherine’s expression turned grim. As a young human girl, it was always a bit uncomfortable to hear other races’ opinions on humans, but she could not refute these negative views, only managing a bitter smile as she said, "Right, if forming a united army, how to distribute troops from different parties would indeed be a big issue, and it would be hard to arrange everything fairly to everyone’s satisfaction."
"Yes, electing a leader that all parties could trust was not simple; humans had the most troops, so logically, a human should be the leader. But humans were unable to gain our trust," Fula nodded. "At that time when Kyle and Nellie were working hard to unite us against the Undead, we actually hoped to elect them as leaders of the united forces. Only then could we be assured that the united forces’ commander would not deliberately send other races’ troops to their deaths to weaken our military strength to fulfill their own objectives after the war. But they always refused, saying there were more important tasks to attend to. Later, we understood that their tasks were indeed more important."
"Ultimately, it was at their suggestion that we all followed the Zeus Declaration, including demi-gods of all races swearing oaths to their Inherent Psychic Domains, never allowing any race to deliberately endanger the troops of other races for their own ends. Should anyone do so, they would face joint punishment from all the demi-gods," said Master Antuin. "After these oaths, the alliance was smoothly formed. But you all know, by then, we had already missed the best opportunity to strike."
"So, the many deaths in the First Undead War, we all bear some responsibility," Conaida picked up his glass again, only to suddenly exclaim, "Hey, where’s my drink?"
Indeed, the Dwarf’s glass was completely empty, and not only that, but all the communal plates on the table were also empty, with only a little bit of food remaining on each person’s own plate.
Almost without needing to think, the girls’ stares converged sharply on Pannis, who was wiping his mouth and facing everyone with an innocent expression, puzzled, he said, "Keep eating, why has everyone stopped to stare at me? Have I become more handsome?"
"Of course... you are still... go to hell!"
