Chapter 453: Chapter 71 Did you hear that?
"By the gods above!" Lord Wild’s eyes, already large, bulged even further, "What just happened?! Why is my goblet in that Foreigner’s hand, Helbert?"
Priest Helbert was struck dumb, his face similarly painted with astonishment. It took him a moment before he finally said, "That’s a trick of the heathens."
"Could Julius impart such tricks too?" asked Greymane.
"The Earth and Grain God deigns not to stoop to such petty tricks," replied Helbert.
"You should send these two Outsiders away, since they disregard your kindness and insist on rubbing salt in your wound, there’s no need to entertain them as guests any further."
However, upon hearing this, Lord Wild hesitated to issue the order to expel them. Instead, he said, "So, even the great Julius has little tricks he does not deign to perform?"
Helbert wanted to deny it, but indeed, he could not do what Li Yu had just done.
In fact, Priest Helbert still couldn’t understand how the goblet had hopped into Li Yu’s hand.
He could only bolster himself and say, "Each God has their own domain of expertise, my lord."
Upon hearing this, Greymane’s eyes, which held a trace of grief, now sparked with an unusual glimmer, "Julius is the God of Earth and Grain, a deity of harvest. Dispelling a curse isn’t his strong suit, is it, Helbert?"
Without waiting for the old priest to answer, the City Lord of Fertile Corner continued on his own.
"I’m thinking this might not be a test from Julius to us. Perhaps the curse comes from somewhere else, and the Earth and Grain God simply hasn’t the means to counter it."
"We mortals should not speculate about the Gods," Priest Helbert warned in a low voice, and again suggested, "You should send them away."
"No," Lord Wild shook his head, pointing at Li Yu, "This Prophet Merlin has proven himself to be a man of true abilities. I think we should give him a chance."
At this, Priest Helbert also began to grow anxious, "Lord Wild, you have just claimed that you are unlike the Arias family’s young lady, that you are a mature and wise Lord, with firm enough faith not to be deceived by the sweet words of these heathens."
"Did I say that?" Greymane looked surprised. He asked an attendant standing by, "Did you hear that?"
The attendant glanced at Priest Helbert, hunched and looking like he could barely walk steadily, then at the robust Lord Wild, whose fists were nearly as big as his head.
In his heart, he could only apologize to the great Julius.
"No," the attendant lied blatantly, "I was worried for Miss Donia just now, got a bit distracted, and didn’t hear anything."
"You little rogue," muttered the City Lord of Fertile Corner under his breath. Then he asked his Guard Commander, who stood not far off, "And you?"
"I didn’t hear it either," the Guard Commander replied without hesitation.
"Did you hear it, Sir Irelia?" Lord Wild then turned to the Lady.
Miss Rabbit, of course, was not about to undermine the City Lord of the Singleton Family, so she also said, "With your caliber and tolerance, I believe a Noble like you would never say such a thing."
"Exactly," Lord Wild slapped the armrest of his chair, "It seems you misheard, Helbert, but considering your age, I will not hold it against you."
Priest Helbert nearly exploded with rage. This goddamn Lord really had no shame. When he couldn’t talk his way out of his own boasting, he forced everyone present to feign amnesia and then had the audacity to smear the one man who dared to speak the truth.
If it weren’t for the old priest still being rather robust, without any serious conditions like high blood pressure or heart disease, he might have already been sent off with this wave.
Moreover, Helbert knew that it was becoming unrealistic to stop Li Yu from treating those cursed, as Wild had clearly been persuaded.
It couldn’t be blamed on the Earth and Grain God’s loyal follower, the lord of the Fertile Corner, for his disloyalty to Julius; the poor City Lord had already lost two sons, and now his most beloved granddaughter had also been entangled by that terrible curse.
And Helbert, a priest of the Earth and Grain Church, also had no way to remove the curse, so Wild sought help from outsiders.
This was actually not the first time Wild had done this; when his second son was seriously ill, he had also sent people to secretly seek help from the Silver Moon Church and the followers of the God of Strategy and Urban Civilization.
But they had all failed to save the person in question, and thereafter, Wild truly believed that this was Julius’s trial for them, even willing to send his little granddaughter to the farm to await death.
However, the arrival of Li Yu had rekindled his hope.
Still, Priest Helbert didn’t believe this self-proclaimed prophet of the Double Rest Sect, a foreigner, could resolve a crisis that others had failed to address.
Even after witnessing the very miraculous act he had performed earlier.
Perhaps letting him try to remove the curse and failing once more could convince the Singleton family head to fully resign his faith in Julius.
Thinking this, Helbert no longer continued to obstruct.
And Wild had already begun to urge Li Yu, "Alright, the time has come for you to show your skills, Prophet. I will have my Guard Commander Blake take you to that farmstead."
Li Yu nodded and followed Blake back to the farmstead outside the city.
Miss Rabbit still wanted to go in to broaden her horizons, but was dissuaded by Li Yu. Apart from the scenes being a bit unsettling, there were also safety considerations to take into account.
Syphilis is primarily transmitted through sexual contact, from mother to child, and blood, with few cases of infection due to kissing, breastfeeding, shaking hands, or contact with the patient’s clothes and other possessions.
So as long as they took proper precautions, it was relatively safe, but just to be sure, Li Yu decided not to bring too many people.
Eventually, besides Guard Commander Blake and his four subordinates, Li Yu allowed Jude to select two members of the Black Hound Guards to accompany them, mainly for security purposes.
According to Sola, the farmstead only admitted the cursed and had no guards stationed there; Li Yu did not yet know the situation inside.
Based on his past experiences, people faced with death could very well discard moral and legal restraints, becoming frantic.
However, as long as they hadn’t completely lost reason, facing a well-armed group of nine, they probably wouldn’t harbor many extraneous thoughts.
Before setting out, Li Yu distributed masks and gloves to those participating in the mission, and the Black Hound Guards of course donned them immediately.
But Blake and the four guards he led, all devotees of the Earth and Grain God, hesitated for a moment before refusing.
Although earlier in the City Lord Mansion, Blake had resolutely chosen to stand with Wild, that was because he had always served the Singleton family.
But when it came to choosing between the Double Rest Sect and the Earth and Grain Church, he naturally still leaned towards the latter.
