Chapter 454: Chapter 72: Primitive Rituals
Li Yu did not insist that Blake and the others wear masks, since syphilis doesn’t really spread through the air, as for what if it’s not syphilis inside.
Then Blake and his companions could only fend for themselves.
However, the situation inside the farm was much better than Li Yu had expected; as they walked, they saw no bodies or bloodstains.
On the contrary, everything was well organized, just like a normal farm, until they reached a location near the center, where they found four bodies.
These bodies were neatly arranged, and there were no signs of struggle on them.
Li Yu’s gaze swept over the four bodies, then he lifted his head and looked towards a tree not far away.
There was a figure there, drawing water from a well.
Li Yu walked towards the figure, who was intently pulling up a bucket filled with water, until Li Yu almost reached him did he hear the noise.
Turning around and seeing the peculiar appearance of Li Yu startled him, causing him to instinctively step back half a step, tripping and almost falling into the well.
Fortunately, the odd person in front of him reached out just in time to grab him.
By then, Li Yu also got a clear look at the person’s face, a human female approximately in her thirties.
She had a pretty face and wore an old cloak, though the material of the cloak looked quite fine, probably expensive when purchased.
Moreover, her skin appeared smoother than that of the average farmwife; Li Yu paid special attention to the skin that was exposed and saw no spots or lesions.
The woman was still somewhat unsettled, especially when she saw the guard behind Li Yu, her face filling with more terror.
When Blake also saw the woman, he was startled too, "Lady Amanda, you are still alive."
The woman named Amanda quickly lowered her head, "You must have mistaken me for someone else, sir."
"No, I have seen you, at Sir Dorian’s banquet. Do you remember that night, you absolutely glowed. Three years ago, I heard you and your husband caught that terrible curse, and I’ve been saddened for you ever since.
"I haven’t heard from you for so long after that, I thought you were dead. My goodness, you’re still alive, and you even look good, this must be Julius’s blessing.
"I should report this matter to Lord Wild and Priest Helbert." The Guard Commander said excitedly, "Tell them someone survived the curse, and then I will figure out a way to get you out of here."
"Please don’t do that," Amanda’s response somewhat surprised Blake.
Before the Guard Commander could speak again, another voice rang out, "You would ruin this place."
Blake turned his head and saw the door of a house on his left side open, and a fully-armed young girl, not very tall, walked out.
She looked one or two shades lighter than Wild whom Li Yu had seen before, also sporting a wart, though much smaller and paler than Wild’s, resembling a crescent moon.
She bore the noble authority of her father as well.
Without needing the girl to introduce herself, Li Yu had already guessed her identity.
"Miss Donia," Blake and the four guards behind him saluted, then continued, "What do you mean by this?"
"Blake, can’t you guess why this place is so orderly?" Donia said.
"Lady Amanda, are you managing this farmstead?" Blake thought of something, his face showing even more surprise.
"I’m not managing it, I’m just encouraging everyone to stick together," Amanda said, "After all, Julius has already forsaken the people here."
"Other people saying such things I can understand, but you... shouldn’t you thank Julius for allowing you to live?"
"But I’m not his follower," Amanda said. "Many years ago, I turned my back on my faith in him, yet everyone else here is his follower. Look where it got them."
The guard commander fell silent.
"What brings you here, Blake?" Donia spoke again at that time. "You don’t seem to be affected by the curse."
"I came here accompanying Prophet Merlin," the guard commander pointed to Li Yu at his side.
"Prophet Merlin?" Donia raised her eyebrows. "I think I’ve heard this name somewhere before.
"Wait, are you that Merlin from the Double Rest Sect who helped Sir Irelia slay a dragon and has been a thorn in the side of the Silver Moon Church?"
"You know me?" Li Yu said.
"Hmm, I know a priest from the Silver Moon Church who often mentions you in her letters; she detests you deeply, yet she can’t deny your power. Was it my grandfather who invited you here?"
Donia quickly overturned her own guess, "No, that can’t be right, or he wouldn’t have sent me here."
"Actually, I was accompanying Sir Irelia to the Royal Capital and we were passing by; I heard about the curse and decided to check it out," Li Yu paused, then said to the young lady.
"Can you take off the gloves on your hands?"
Donia nodded and briskly removed her knight gloves, revealing the brown pustules on her skin to Li Yu.
"Am I beyond saving?" the young girl asked. "The herbalists in the city, and even Priest Helbert, say so."
Li Yu did not respond but asked instead, "Are you experiencing any other symptoms?"
"My throat is a bit sore, but other than that, I don’t feel much different than usual," Donia put her gloves back on.
"Your problem isn’t so serious," Li Yu said. "I can remove the curse."
From Donia’s symptoms, it was likely that she had syphilis, although the mortality rate of syphilis in this region seemed higher than what Li Yu had known in his world.
Perhaps this was due to a more primitive strain of the disease.
"Really?" Donia exclaimed in surprise.
To stop her grandfather from worrying, the girl had always shown extraordinary resilience since being sent here, donning armor and her "toy" hatchet, War Axe.
Yet, deep inside, Donia harbored a profound fear of death; she was young and did not want her life to end so soon.
Li Yu did not delay further; he took out penicillin and a disposable syringe from his medicine box, then drew the penicillin into the syringe.
Looking around, his gaze finally settled on Amanda, and he waved her over, "I have infused the divine power into this holy artifact. You can complete the rest."
"Why not do it yourself?" Donia asked, puzzled.
Amanda, eyeing the transparent tube, also doubted its effectiveness because the colorless liquid inside clearly looked just like plain water.
"Because the second half of the ritual requires you to take off your pants," Li Yu explained.
Donia gasped, her face instantly reddening, "I just found out that the rituals of the Double Rest Sect are so... primitive..."
"Not entirely, it’s mainly because the curse on you is quite severe."
