Chapter 258: Chapter 16: The Taste of Being the Villain

Priest Jile’s argument left Ireya feeling extremely uneasy.

It was as though her capacity for mercy existed solely on account of her faith in Pisya, and that once she embraced the arms of Saturday, she would turn into a cold-blooded, merciless villain.

However, upon glancing at the fully armed guards beside her, then at the villagers standing petrified and trembling in the center of the village, Miss Rabbit couldn’t deny she felt a bit like a villainous Lord from a play.

Moreover, although these villagers had killed someone, according to their account, they had ample reason for doing so.

It was the Sabbath of the Double Rest Sect who had first committed the atrocities, and afterward, the villagers rose against them and killed those evildoers.

If that really was the case, the Lady wouldn’t mind absolving the young man with the bushy eyebrows of his crimes.

But a little thought revealed that things couldn’t be that simple.

Firstly, Priest Jile of the Silver Moon Church suddenly turned up in this obscure village, which, based on Miss Rabbit’s understanding of the Silver Moon Church, was abnormal in itself.

Then there were the Black Armored Cavalry who ambushed Li Yu in the forest; their appearance here was clearly not a mere coincidence.

This seemed to be a trap set by the Silver Moon Church.

But the problem was, even if one realized this, it seemed to be of little use.

All the villagers claimed they had not seen those Black Armored Cavalry, nor were they aware of their existence — with so many people saying the same thing, it didn’t seem like they were lying.

The young woman glanced at Jile again. His stepping forward at this time also didn’t augur well, as he had fashioned himself into the image of a sufferer.

It was akin to throwing fresh tinder into an already burning fire, further escalating the opposition between the followers of the Silver Moon Church and the Double Rest Sect.

Miss Rabbit now had a headache.

In the end, she could only order the arrest of both the young man with the bushy eyebrows and Priest Jile.

When the guards restrained the two men, there was a noticeable uproar among the crowd. Many villagers broke down in tears, or glared at the Lady with intense anger, which made the young woman feel quite uncomfortable.

Primarily because she wasn’t sure whether the two Sabbath sent by the Double Rest Sect actually murdered those two girls.

Ireya had absolute trust in Li Yu, but as for the Missionaries under him... Miss Rabbit only knew they were mainly Noble Families exiled to the western frontiers by the Weiting Family.

These people had no problem with cultural level and etiquette, but being Nobles, many of them had bad habits. These were manageable in times of destitution, but once the situation improved, it was uncertain whether those bad habits might resurface.

Using the little power at hand to commit evil in this small village wasn’t beyond the realm of possibility.

How could she suppress this matter?

Now that Ireya’s one foot was already in the door of the Double Rest Sect, she naturally began to subconsciously consider things from the Sect’s perspective, thinking about how to help the Double Rest Sect thwart the Silver Moon Church’s conspiracy.

She stared at Jile, contemplating whether or not to impose a harsh punishment on him to force him to admit that the two girls were secretly killed by the Silver Moon Church, framing it on the two Sabbath.

In that case, if those two Sabbaths merely had the village girls serve them in bed, it would damage the reputation of the Double Rest Sect somewhat, but not to an irretrievable extent.

Furthermore, there was the strict order for the villagers to not spread the word about what happened that night; however, enforcing such secrecy proved challenging.

As Miss Rabbit was pondering this, a cold wind swept past her ear, shaking loose the snow accumulated on the branches above her head.

Gazing at the swirling snowflakes before her, the girl paused in a slight daze, once again recalling a conversation that had taken place between her and Li Yu as they watched the snow together.

The crux of it was Ireya asking Li Yu what specific tasks she would need to undertake after joining the Double Rest Sect.

She still remembered Li Yu shaking his head, telling her, "Just do what you think you should do. If there’s anything that requires your cooperation, I’ll discuss it with you."

"Don’t you need me to bestow some special privileges on your sect?" the girl asked curiously, pausing before adding, "Priests from the Silver Moon Church have certain immunities.

"They have agreements with many Nobles; if their members commit a crime within Noble Families’ territories, they are not judged by the Lords of those lands but are handed over to the Silver Moon Church.

"It is the seven High Priests who ultimately determine their guilt and decide on their punishment. I can grant the Double Rest Sect the same powers."

"Thank you, but the Double Rest Sect doesn’t need such privileges," Li Yu said. "Judging criminals should be the responsibility of Lords, not the sect. I have my duties to carry out, and I believe you are capable of doing your part. Only if each of us fulfills our roles can we make this world a better place."

With these thoughts, Miss Rabbit’s eyes sparkled anew, and the clouds of confusion and gloom in her heart cleared away.

Indeed, how to deal with the Silver Moon Church and thwart its conspiracies was a matter for Merlin and his Double Rest Sect.

As a Lady, why should she overstep her bounds? All she needed to do was attend to her own responsibilities diligently. Treat this as a typical case and ensure a fair and just trial.

Present the facts as they were, no matter who was right or wrong.

If Li Yu had any objections to the final verdict, he would certainly raise them.

As Ireya reflected on the many events she had experienced with Li Yu, she realized he indeed never seemed to ask for any special privileges.

When the Silver Moon Church targeted Li Yu, sending Adelle to challenge him, Miss Rabbit, as a notary, could have been swayed by past favors to covertly favor him, but he did not ask for such bias.

And so, he won the duel fair and square.

This was what the girl admired most about Li Yu.

This man, who claimed to be the Prophet, possessed power far greater than anyone else, yet he exhibited more restraint than all others.

Under that calm facade, indifferent to joy and anger, hid a tenderness towards the world.

Miss Rabbit knew this was not the time to daydream, but she couldn’t help feeling secretly delighted by her little realization.

However, she quickly regained her focus and addressed the young man with thick eyebrows and Priest Jile, as well as the villagers behind them.

"I swear on the honor of the Arias family, I will uncover the truth behind the previous tragedy. If what you’ve said is true, then I will release you unharmed, and what’s more, I will compensate you with a sum of money."
