Chapter 253 - 11 Miracle

Chapter 253: Chapter 11 Miracle

Tom had been a mercenary for seven to eight years and had plenty of combat experience. When suddenly attacked, he did not panic but raised his shield in front of him and shouted for his guards to form a shield wall with him, protecting everyone behind the shields and armor as much as possible.

As the night darkened, it became difficult for the archers in the woods to aim. Though arrows occasionally whizzed past their ears or clanged against the shields, it only added tension without causing any casualties.

The villagers chasing from behind were also taken down by a few Black Hound guards who were in charge of covering the rear.

Seeing the pursuers dwindling and the arrows from the woods thinning, many let out a sigh of relief, not realizing they had already retreated nearly two miles while fighting.

Walking as far as they had, they would reach another village soon where there should still be some troops from House Arias.

Just when everyone thought they were about to escape danger, the sound of hoofbeats suddenly erupted from the other side of the woods.

Tom’s expression changed drastically, "Cavalry!"

His entire body tensed as he spat out the words!

No one understood better than he what encountering cavalry in this area meant; it’s no wonder they had shot their horses first outside the village.

Especially on this stretch of road where the trees were not so dense, with the cavalry picking up speed, it was nearly impossible for those on foot and lacking long weapons to withstand the charge, and worse, there was nowhere to escape.

The last time he faced such a perilous situation was against the Black Dragon, but back then, they had made many preparations beforehand and had the Dragon Slayer Holy Artifact in hand, which did not leave them as passive as tonight.

As Tom grew increasingly agitated, a hand clapped onto his shoulder, and Li Yu’s voice arose beside his ear, "How many?"

"Don’t know, but from the sound of it, likely at least a dozen riders."

"How many can you handle?"

"It depends on their equipment and skill; if it’s cavalry from a regular Noble Family, maybe six or seven," Tom estimated and voiced.

"Then I’ll try to draw some of them away," said Li Yu.

Tom thought he had misheard. Wasn’t it usually his role as the guard to draw away pursuers for Li Yu in situations like this?

As if reading his mind, Li Yu added, "You probably wouldn’t be able to draw many away."

"......"

"Then please, let us protect you!" the Guard Captain implored earnestly.

Li Yu shook his head, "They are likely elites secretly recruited or trained by the Silver Moon Church, meant for dirty jobs unseen by the public. You won’t stand a chance against so many; sticking together would just be sending yourselves to your deaths. No more arguing, just do as I say. Rest assured, if you survive tonight, you will definitely see me again."

While he spoke, Li Yu handed over some trinkets from his pocket to Tom to avoid them scattering if he died, simultaneously instructing, "Keep these safe and bring them back to the Sect for me. I’ll come to collect them when I return."

While they were talking, the cavalry emerged from the woods: sixteen riders, all clad in black armor, atop magnificent and mighty warhorses—clearly the cream of the crop.

However, their armor bore no crest that could identify their affiliations, which was quite rare as soldiers usually took pride in their regiments.

Especially those with a long and illustrious history of military achievements. Their soldiers would plaster the crest all over themselves, fearing others might not recognize their origins.

But the sixteen knights before them had perfectly blended into the surrounding night, like sixteen ghosts, with no one knowing where they came from or where they were headed.

An ordinary person passing by them would probably just think it was all a nightmare.

Tom still wanted to persuade Li Yu to reconsider, but the latter had already left the group. What angered Tom even more was that the two lizardman warriors, who were supposed to guard Li Yu, had stepped aside to let him pass without any attempt to stop him. Dammit, what kind of guards were they?

Li Yu’s figure soon merged into the night.

Tom saw Li Yu running toward the east where there was a small slope, followed by a winding stream below.

The Black-armored Cavalry had also noticed the commotion on their side. Although the night impaired their vision, Li Yu’s black suit and black trousers were distinctive.

In Green Field, anyone familiar with him could recognize him at a glance.

Because the leading cavalryman wore a helmet, Tom couldn’t see his expression but could still guess the joy in the man’s heart from his movements.

Afterward, the leader split half of his men to charge toward the small slope where Li Yu was, while the remaining eight riders continued towards Tom and the others.

In his eyes, leaving those eight riders was likely enough to deal with Tom and his company.

Seeing this, Tom felt a surge of anger and said coldly, "Let’s show them what we’re made of."

Upon hearing this, the lizard people quickly pulled out their hand crossbows from behind their backs and turned on the laser sights. Instantly, thirteen red dots appeared on the eight Black-armored Cavalrymen.

Before the fight broke out, Tom glanced once more in Li Yu’s direction, and that look made him gasp in astonishment.

Li Yu had reached the stream by then. Tom saw Li Yu take off his two leather shoes and socks, then he continued walking and stepped directly into the stream.

But the next moment, a miracle happened!

Li Yu’s foot did not touch the water; instead, it hovered above it. He maintained his speed, gliding over the water surface as gracefully as a dragonfly.

This scene even astonished the pursuers behind him, with someone involuntarily exclaiming, "My God, how does he do that?! Running on water without sinking, what kind of trick is this?"

"No matter what trick it is, since we’ve encountered him, we can’t let him get away. Quickly, chase him!" the leader, profoundly shaken by the unbelievable scene, quickly regained his composure and urged his men.

The remaining seven riders also snapped out of it and spurred their horses once more.

Their hooves splashed through the stream, stirring up splashes of water. Fortunately, the depth of the stream was just above the horses’ legs, allowing them to ford the river, though their speed was much reduced.

They didn’t look nearly as effortless and composed as Li Yu.
