Chapter 254: Chapter 12: The Squad Leader’s Debut

Tom had no time to look again as the enemy had already rapidly approached them.

He was about to order to shoot arrows, but then the situation took an unexpected turn. Anton, who had been quiet, suddenly jumped out from behind them and ran towards the group of Black Armored Cavalry, shouting as he went.

"Wait, I’m not with them, I am also from the Silver Moon Church! My name is Anton, and I am the Universal Language teacher sent to the Arias family!"

"Fool! Come back!" Tom had barely finished speaking when Anton was already less than ten steps away from the foremost Rider.

Then the Universal Language teacher saw the other pull out the long sword from his waist.

"It’s true! I really am from the Silver Moon Chur..." Anton pleaded, but before he could finish his sentence, the sword in the knight’s hand had already fallen, mercilessly striking his chest!

The Universal Language teacher let out a scream, fell to the ground, and his blood splattered out, scattering among the bushes nearby, like blossoming small red flowers.

By then, Tom had no time to care about whether he lived or died, and bellowed, "Fire!"

The Black Hound’s warriors all pressed the mechanism, and the crossbow arrows shot from the bow arms, bringing a gust of wind!

The two sides were now only twenty or thirty steps apart, and with the aid of laser sights, even though they were shooting at moving targets, the accuracy was still somewhat assured, with at least half of the arrows hitting their mark.

Unfortunately, the opponents were also protected by full armor, and most of the shots Tom and his men landed were on the non-vital parts of the armor.

Although the cavalry were hit by arrows, they merely grunted a few times and kept advancing in pain, except one Black Hound warrior whose shot strayed badly yet turned out to be serendipitous as it hit a warhorse in the eye. The great horse neighed and collapsed to the ground.

And together with it, its rider was thrown off, and thereafter they even tripped another horse that could not dodge in time, creating a bit of chaos.

Tom was now regretting why he had chosen to target the men rather than the horses.

But there was no helping it; this was the cost of growth.

Many famous commanders too had faced defeat after defeat before becoming renowned. Tom, when he was a mercenary, was not a leader in his team; it was only after joining the Black Hounds that he had the opportunity to lead a small squad on his own.

Plus, being highly tense at the moment, it was inevitable for him to overlook certain things in his command.

But now was not the time for reflection. There was no time to reload the hand crossbow, so Tom simply tossed it aside and rushed forward with his sword drawn.

A direct confrontation was impossible, after all, the opposition was cavalry.

Tom merely feinted an attack, then immediately dodged to the side to deal with the cavalry.

In comparison, his Lizardman Warriors were much more straightforward, waving their shields and weapons and shouting as they ran towards their enemy, only to be met by a sword strike from the opponents. They raised their Dragon Scale Shields to block, but the next moment both the men and the shields were knocked to the ground.

The Dragon Scale Shields were indeed hard enough to remain unscathed under the strike, but the charge of the cavalry was also very strong.

Even with armor protecting them, the Lizardman Warriors weren’t instantly killed face-to-face like the Universal Language teacher, but the impact was severe, leaving many of them unable to get up from the ground for quite some time.

Perhaps it was the inspiration from the miracle of Li Yu walking on water earlier, but now all members of the Black Hound Guard were charged up as if injected with adrenaline, their morale skyrocketing. And because the Black Armored Cavalry had previously split into two groups, the Black Hound Guard now had a numerical advantage on this front.

One man was knocked down, and another nearby comrade charged at the rider on the horse.

Taking advantage of the moment when the cavalry was also stunned by the recoil and unable to attack, he briskly pounced and pulled the enemy off the horse.

Meanwhile, Tom the squad leader also found his command rhythm, quickly saying, "Aim for the horse’s legs, force them off their mounts!"

And indeed, this tactic proved quite effective.

Except for one who managed to breakthrough, the remaining five cavalry members were forced to jump off their horses.

However, even dismounted, facing nearly double the enemies, those Black Armored Cavalry showed no signs of panic. They didn’t even call for help from the other group, but calmly drew their swords to meet their foes.

Tom charged at the nearest enemy and then to a Lizardman Warrior who wanted to assist, he said, "Leave this guy to me, go help the others."

The squad leader’s resolute eyes and confident tone boosted his stylish value tremendously in front of his subordinates, making his figure more imposing.

However, once they clashed, Tom was surprised to find himself utterly suppressed!

The swordsmanship of the cavalry he was facing was terrifyingly strong. Tom was considered one among the more skilled in the mercenary ranks, but against this opponent, he could mostly only defend and take hits, with almost no chance to counterattack.

This was still thanks to his superior equipment; otherwise, Tom figured he might already be lying down.

Continuing this way, his defeat was only a matter of time.

So, throwing concern for his pride aside, Tom shouted, "Someone, someone, this one is tough!"

Though the squad leader contradicted himself, the Lizardman Warriors still obliged. Hearing his call for help, someone quickly came over, but even two against one, they barely managed to hold their own against the Black Armored Cavalry.

Thus, Tom began to think deviously, saying to the Lizardman Warrior fighting alongside him, "I’ll hold him here, you, go pick up the Hand Crossbow, load an Arrow, and shoot him."

Since the Lizardmen didn’t speak Universal Language and had only learned a few battle-related words, Tom, who only spoke mediocre Lizardman Language, had to repeat the complex command several times, so much so that the enemy Black Armored Cavalry understood what Tom intended to do.

His sword movements suddenly became more fierce, significantly increasing the pressure on Tom. Fortunately, the Lizardman Warrior understood his command and immediately abandoned his opponent to retrieve the discarded Hand Crossbow.

Meanwhile, Tom used all his skills to desperately hold off the opponent.

He even got injured on his left hand and nearly got a sword to his neck, which made him break out in a cold sweat, but fortunately, he managed to hold out until the Hand Crossbow was ready.

The Lizardman Warrior didn’t aim for a vital spot, merely targeting the enemy’s lower leg and firing the Arrow. Although the Black Armored Cavalry tried hard to dodge, at such close range, and with the aid of a laser sight, the Arrow could not miss.

Sharp, agonizing pain surged through his lower leg, nearly immobilizing it.

Tom, of course, wouldn’t miss this rare opportunity and immediately and tenaciously tangled with him again.
