Chapter 252: Chapter 10 Breakthrough
Li Yu wanted to understand the ins and outs of the situation, but those villagers on the other side weren’t keen on giving him that opportunity.
Wielding what looked like somewhat ludicrous weapons, they quickly surrounded the longhouse where the Double Rest Sect and the others were located. Then, without heeding Tom’s request to negotiate, they launched an attack on the main entrance.
However, as a tied-up old farmer was pushed out of the house, the crowd finally stopped in their tracks.
Those at the forefront looked at each other in confusion, seemingly unsure of what to do next. It appeared that whoever had masterminded the whole setup hadn’t anticipated this turn of events and had thus provided no prior instructions.
At this point, Li Yu finally managed to speak up, asking, "Who among you is the leader?"
No one answered, but many villagers’ gazes shifted to the old farmer being held hostage by Tom, whose mouth was gagged with a cloth by the guard of the Black Hound.
This was to prevent him from speaking recklessly and revealing his mental instability.
"Oh, besides him?" Li Yu asked again.
At this moment someone in the crowd shouted, "Don’t talk to him, Priest Jile has said that these heathens are monsters, they can beguile people with their words! Without realizing it, they take control of your heart. We need to dispose of them quickly!"
"But Uncle Tim is still in their hands," someone said hesitantly.
"Uncle Tim once said that he and Aunt Emma were ready to sacrifice themselves for the goddess," another person added, "What we need to do is avenge him and Liss and Claire, and wipe out all these heathens!"
"Forgive me for being blunt, but you seem to overestimate your own fighting capabilities and underestimate ours," Tom interjected. "If it comes down to a fight, you’ll probably just be praying you can run faster than your companions!"
"We aren’t afraid of you! Damnable heathens!!!" A youth, who looked to be only about eleven or twelve, swung a wooden stick furiously, his face turning beet red with anger.
Tom couldn’t be bothered to waste more words. He handed over the hostage to a colleague beside him and the next moment, unexpectedly darted out. With just a few steps, he reached the boy.
Then, seizing the wooden stick from the latter’s hands, he snapped it with a flick and tossed it on the ground, mocking, "Is this the thing you planned to use to kill me with?"
Only then did the villagers around react. Someone lifted a sickle to strike at Tom, who did not dodge. The sickle clanged against his chest, leaving not even a scratch on his Dwarf Armor.
"See? Whoever told you to attack us didn’t have good intentions; it’s clear they sent you here to die," Tom said, effortlessly dodging attacks from a few villagers and calmly retreating to his original position.
He even took the time to adjust his shoulder armor at leisure.
But this act didn’t calm the villagers before him; instead, it fanned their fury even further, looking like they were ready to charge forward and fight to the death at any moment.
Li Yu frowned, not expecting these villagers to be so resistant to reason, ready to chase them down with the intent to kill, incommunicable as those brainwashed by pyramid schemes.
And, unsurprisingly, the one who had likely instilled these hateful thoughts in them was none other than Priest Jile.
The Silver Moon Church finally couldn’t hold back anymore, huh.
Li Yu scanned the crowd but did not find the figure of Priest Jile, so he turned to Tom and said, "Let’s prepare to break out. They hope we can wreak havoc tonight, and we can’t step into the trap they’ve set. We must avoid using lethal force as much as possible to prevent the situation from worsening. Can you do that?"
The Guard Captain, whose hair had become thicker, nodded. "If it’s just about breaking out, there’s indeed no need to draw swords against this rabble. But I asked those who stayed outside earlier, and according to their descriptions, there are some very skilled archers hidden in the woods. Now, without our horses and carrying a wounded comrade, it won’t be too easy to leave if they attack us," he said.
"What if we don’t take the same route we came by?" the Universal Language teacher suggested at that moment. "We could avoid returning to Green Field for now and ask the Pope Family to protect and escort us back."
"It’s useless. Given our current speed of travel, if we head in another direction, those archers could easily catch up with us. Moreover, we’re less familiar with the terrain there, and might even come into conflict with the Pope Family soldiers. Nobles in the west are believers in Pisya."
As Tom spoke, he seemed to think of something and then looked at Anton with doubt. "You’re also a man of the Silver Moon Church, aren’t you? Did you have a hand in this? Leading us into this trap."
The Universal Language teacher was taken aback and quickly defended himself, "I’m just as clueless about the events in this village as you are." He paused for a moment before adding, "According to the villagers, it was your people who started the trouble here. Of course, the villagers shouldn’t have resorted to violence right from the start."
The last half of the sentence was added by Anton on the fly, upon seeing that Tom’s expression did not look too good.
Li Yu then said, "Anton is not a problem. With his position and the level of importance attached to him in the Silver Moon Church, the Church would not involve him in such matters."
"..."
At a loss for words, the Universal Language teacher didn’t know what to say.
But no one paid attention to him any longer. Li Yu said, "Let’s wait a bit longer, and leave when it gets darker."
And so, the group continued to stand off with the villagers for some time during which the villagers launched two attacks but were repelled by Tom and his group who also seized some clubs and other weapons that were less likely to be fatal.
Tom distributed those weapons around and himself took up a chair in hand.
Seeing that it was about time, the group began to break out according to their plan.
Tom led the way with two other guards of the Black Hound, while the rest of the guards surrounded Li Yu, Anton, and their companion with the leg wound as they moved towards the edge of the village.
Each villager looked fierce and vicious, but in the eyes of Tom and the other professional soldiers, their combat ability was not much stronger than the youngster with a wooden stick they had faced before.
Furthermore, the Black Hound guards were well-equipped. Clad in Dwarf Armor and brandishing newly-forged Dragon Scale Shields, they were protected securely, rendering the rustic weapons in the farmers’ hands ineffective against them.
It was as they were nearing the village entrance that the archers who had shot down the warhorses earlier reappeared.
A black iron-tipped arrow flew towards Tom with a swoosh, but Tom, who was intensely focused on his guard, deflected it with his Dragon Scale Shield.
