Chapter 99: He Was Just Talking to Himself

Lunchtime was not that peaceful. Well, Calix and Evelyn bickered right the moment they sat at the dining table. Old Madam Xu’s nagging could only do so much.

Leslie sat on a chair next to Calix. His other side was occupied by Vernon. Lucille, Amelia and Evelyn were on the opposite while Old Madam Xu sat at the head of the table.

"...scared the heck of me. You dragged someone’s precious and unassuming daughter to be your wife."

"At least I have a wife now~ Aren’t you still single, Ice Goddess Xu? I think your boyfriend will get struck by your icy storm before anything."

"Huh! I still remember you ditched one of your blind dates for ice-skiing! The one who got hit by an icy storm was your blind date!"

"Hurm... Speaking of ice-skiing, I remember that time you almost crashed into the tree. All because you didn’t listen to your brother’s, me, advice."

"That’s when I was ten! I’m a pro now, okay?!"

The two siblings deliberately poked at each other’s personal lives, including the past events. The youngest Evelyn got more heated as her second brother looked annoyingly calmer.

In the midst of it, Amelia smacked her little palms on the table. Shaking her tiny head, her cute pigtails swayed following the movement.

Pouting, Amelia glared at Calix in front and Evelyn next to her. Then, her round eyes shifted to Old Madam Xu.

"Sigh... childish Second Uncle and Little Aunt. Great Grandma, Mia is better right? Mia is more mature than Second Uncle and Little Aunt."

Calix and Evelyn’s breath hitched, stopping their quarrel all of a sudden. Old Madam Xu burst out laughing, followed by Vernon and Lucille.

In disbelief, Calix narrowed his eyes, staring at the chubby-cheek turnip head opposite him.

"Where did you learn such a term huh? Are you sure you’re four years old?"

Leslie chuckled, wondering if little Amelia was secretly a top-tier genius who operated a big company behind her parents’ back. She still remembered the shockingly high-skilled four and five years old she stumbled in some novels before.

Haha... This world didn’t have the same setting, right?

"Humph!" Amelia huffed, puffing her chubby cheeks, "Mia is four years old! Second Uncle, finish your food ah. Don’t pick on Little Aunt!"

"..."

Why he was the only one nagged by this short one who barely reached his knees?

Amused, Leslie finally joined Old Madam Xu and the others guffawed at the situation. Calix stiffly moved his head around, staring deadpan at her.

"Second Uncle! Look at Mia ah! Why do you look at the air?"

Amelia pouted again, thinking what was wrong with her second uncle to suddenly look at where no one was seated.

"...yeah, you kiddo."

Lunch ended with Amelia nagging at Calix. He was so tempted to pinch the little turnip head’s round cheeks to make her shut up. His victory came when Amelia became drowsy after the meal.

Tsk tsk, what a four year old knew ah? She turned sleepy after eating so much.

Vernon carried the sleepy Amelia. Followed by Lucille, they intended to rest for a bit before Andrian and Harper arrived.

As for Evelyn, she escorted Old Madam Xu to the latter’s bedroom. The top actress didn’t forget to stick out her tongue at Calix before leaving, showing her lingering resentment for her annoying second brother.

"You guys didn’t stop even when having meals, huh?" asked Leslie after the dining room was empty, leaving only them behind.

"I remember that time... when I was eleven," Calix looked at the ceiling, throwing a forlorn look, "Eve threw a meatball at me. It’s so sticky. My favorite shirt got ruined by her."

Urgh... It was a sad memory. Calix was especially fond of the mint green shirt he wore at that time.

Leslie narrowed her eyes, sensing there was something more to the story, "Was it a counterattack for what you did?"

If Calix was eleven, Evelyn should be around five years old. The gap between their ages was quite big.

Calix let out a sigh, "I pulled her pigtails and got her ribbons crooked. She paid revenge with the meatball."

"..."

Served you right!

The younger CEO Xu was as chaotically naughty as right now. She couldn’t imagine how poor Evelyn fared against her annoying second brother.

Sigh... The oppressed started to resist the tyrant’s pesky attacks.

"No wonder she tried to fly-kick you. Now I kinda wanna see when she wins against you."

"Huh!" Calix scoffed loudly, ridiculing the image, "That won’t gonna happen! That brat’s skills are miles behind me."

"She might use tricks and trap you, CEO Xu."

"Nah, my sister’s not that bright. She..."

"Oh? Second Young Master, I thought you’re on a phone call."

Calix blinked, realizing that Butler Gu and a few other maids entered the dining room. They wanted to clear the table up.

"...haha, no," Calix laughed awkwardly, thinking that Butler Gu might hear him when he talked to Leslie just now, "I was just talking to myself. Hehe, see you later, Uncle Gu."

Calix hurriedly walked out of the dining room, leaving a confused Butler Gu behind. A laughing Leslie quickly caught up to him.

"Don’t your relatives start coming tomorrow? Be careful ah. They might think you’re talking to the air because your wife isn’t here."

Calix frowned, grumbling under his breath, "I’ll curse them to get haunted by whatever vengeful ghosts lingered at their home."

"Hahaha!"

The nosy relatives would wonder why the recently married CEO Xu talked to himself.

They wouldn’t keep their guesses inside their minds instead, they found ways to irk the person involved with their inquiries.

Life would be extraordinarily beautiful if we could put some people on mute.

The time had just struck a quarter after two. Andrian and Harper wouldn’t appear until a few more hours.

"Bye~ I’m going out."

Calix glanced at Leslie who floated passing the windows. They parted ways in the middle of the corridor. She wanted to spend her time in the yard when the weather was this calming.

According to Calix, he and his siblings including some of their relatives would head to the Xu family’s gravesite. The location was not far from the ancestral home.

After cleaning the burial sites, everyone usually had a large-scale picnic in nearby parks.

Once Leslie reached where the stream was, she rose to get to the tree branches. She sat on a sturdy and thick one, leisurely watching the yard from a high place.

Leslie personally found this place so peaceful. It had a different charm than Calix’s private residence but, both were well-liked by her.

"Reading here should be perfect," Leslie smiled in helplessness, recalling the stacks of novels in Calix’s office lounge, "I should bring some here."

Well... People wouldn’t see a book floating in the air if she hid among the leaves, right?

Not sure what should she do now, Leslie started to drowse off. The gentle breeze was luring her to sleep even though she was not tired. Her eyes slowly drooped.

Dancing flower petals, dappled sunlight filtering through the leaves, tranquility carried by the cool spring breeze.

This place was too vivid and alive to simply be treated as a world inside a book.

’Soon... I’ll no longer view it as one.’

Leslie closed her eyes entirely, letting the rustling leaves sing her a lullaby.
