Chapter 100: The Heartwarming Xu Family

Chapter 100: The Heartwarming Xu Family

At half past five, the most waited spouses made their appearance. Andrian and Harper finally returned from their travel abroad.

"Mom!"

"Mom, Dad, you’re here ah."

"Welcome home. How’s your travel?"

The Xu siblings, Lucille and Amelia greeted Andrian and Harper at the entryway. Old Madam Xu waited at the lounge. She didn’t feel too good these days, limiting her movement.

Butler Gu and a few other attendants also followed, welcoming their master and madam after a few months of travel. The attendants swiftly took the luggage and other items from the bodyguards.

"We’re home," chirped a cheery Harper. Her attention immediately fell on Amelia, "Grandma’s sweetheart is cuter ah! Come to Grandma."

"No! Come to Grandpa first. Mia, I brought you cute ribbons."

Amelia cackled when her grandparents fought over her. Reaching out her short limbs, she leaned toward Harper whose expression brightened. The rejected Andrian pretended to sigh.

"Hahaha! Mia loves Grandma the most, en?"

"Grandma~ Mia missed you!"

Carrying the little turnip head, Harper nuzzled her head to Amelia, earning her husband’s envy and her granddaughter’s laughter. Their children watched the scene while smiling in helplessness.

Leslie quietly observed the heartwarming scene of a family reunion. Her lips melted into a smile, affected by their joy.

’Seems like Calix and Evelyn inherit their mother’s features. Vernon gets their father’s.’

Leslie had seen Andrian and Harper from the family portraits hanging on the walls here. But, seeing them in real life amazed her further.

Harper’s delicate beauty refined more as she aged. Her smooth skin mirrored her daughter’s despite having almost three decades of age gap.

Andrian’s sharp facial features seemed to mellow with age but, he could still make maidens infatuated to him. Without a doubt, he was among the most sought-after bachelors during his younger years, just like Calix and Xander now.

’What a splendid gene pool.’

Chuckling to herself, Leslie continued watching them. Andrian had successfully got the adorable Mia to hug him.

"Mom, Dad, don’t just stand there," Vernon gestured to the direction of the lounge, "Grandma’s waiting for you."

"Come, come," Harper tugged at Andrian’s shirt, her eyes sparkling, "We got some gifts for all of you. Let’s open them now."

"Mom, aren’t you tired? We can do that later," asked Evelyn. She hugged one of Harper’s arms before sticking out her tongue to Calix. Her behavior went unnoticed by their mother.

"Did you two fight again?" Harper narrowed her gaze, looking from Evelyn to Calix, "Geez, I can’t leave you guys alone."

"Mom, it’s not like they won’t fight even if you and Dad are here," the eldest brother Vernon reported, a smirk lacing his lips, "People will think they’re elementary schoolers than adults."

"Yes, yes!" Amelia bobbed her head up and down, "Grandma, Second Uncle and Little Aunt fought again. Mia said Mia is more mature than them! Isn’t that right?"

"Hahaha! Do you understand that term?" Andrian guffawed at Amelia. He gently patted her little head, "But, you’re right ah, Mia. Your second uncle and little aunt need to learn from you."

"..."

Calix and Evelyn stared daggers at each other before abruptly looking elsewhere. Their antics earned laughter from everyone.

The family headed to where Old Madam Xu was. One attendant carried a huge paper bag containing the gifts mentioned by Harper.

"Mother, how have you been?"

"Mother, we’re back."

Andrian and Harper greeted Old Madam Xu before hugging the elderly lady. The latter broke into a huge grin, expressing her joy at meeting her son and daughter-in-law again.

"Did you have fun? You two have lost some weight ah. Eat everything tonight."

Andrian and Harper chuckled seeing Old Madam Xu being distressed over them. They sat on both sides next to the old woman.

"We’re fine. We had lots of great food when traveling," said Andrian, trying to placate his mother.

"Andy’s right, Mother," Harper quickly sang the same tune as her husband, "We walked a lot so, it looks as if we didn’t eat much."

The spouses interacted some more with Old Madam Xu before paying attention to the youngsters. Harper gestured to the attendant to give her one of the paper bags. Butler Gu was brewing tea for them.

"Here, here, your gifts!"

Beaming, Harper brought out smaller paper bags from the big one. She began handing them out one by one.

"Mother, this is for you. Vernon and Lucy, Mia too. Calix... and Eve. Okay, go and try them!"

Everyone had the same paper bag but with their names on it. They stared at Harper.

"Mom, did you buy us clothes?" asked Calix, staring suspiciously at the paper bag.

"Don’t talk so much. Go and try them. Just wear it over your shirts," Harper smacked one hand at Calix’s right leg, "Calix, Vernon, go to the next room. Come back later."

"...shouldn’t the women go to another room?" asked Calix dubiously, "Why must..."

Another smack hit Calix’s leg.

"You speak so much. Go, go!"

Under their mother’s sharp gaze, the brothers stepped out of the lounge. Butler Gu and the attendant also left even without being asked.

Old Madam Xu, Lucille, Mia and Evelyn started opening the paper bags.

"Wow! Mom! So pretty!"

Evelyn took the gift out of the bag, it was a sweater with unique tribal prints. Everyone got sweaters but, with different prints and colors.

"Thank you, Mom, Dad," Lucille happily unfolded the sweater, "Hehe, the colors and print are so unique."

"Grandma and Grandpa~ Pretty sweater! Mia loves it!"

"Oho~ Mine looks so awesome too," exclaimed Old Madam Xu, wearing the vibrant plum-gold sweater she got.

Harper and Andrian shared some laughter, delighted to see pure joy on their faces.

"Hehe, let’s take family photos."

Andrian and Harper took their own sweaters out of the huge paper bag. The spouses had the ones with the same prints but, the colors were on reverse.

"Oh? There’s another one?" Evelyn peeked into the large bag, finding one more inside, "For who, Mom?"

Harper glanced the the last paper bag. Chuckling, she answered her daughter’s curiosity.

"It’s for your new sister-in-law."

"Huh?"

Surprised, Leslie blankly stared at Harper. Evelyn wore the same expression as her.

"Hehe, your new sister-in-law is our family now, isn’t it?" Harper’s smile softened, "I hope she’ll wake up soon so, we can get to know her better."

"But, I think Second Brother just randomly picked her as his bride," Evelyn frowned.

"No matter how they got married, she’s your brother’s wife now," Harper gently stroked Evelyn’s hair, "Well, I don’t think he’s that reckless. I’ve carried him for nine months, you know?"

Evelyn pursed her lips, "I feel sorry for her, tho. Get dragged into Second Brother’s scheme."

"Hahaha! Don’t worry ah. Let’s see how their marriage will be."

Leslie blinked, feeling a surge of warmth took over her heart. Even though her lips were smiling, tears pooled in her eyes.

This family... they were all good people.

Clasping her hands together, Leslie comforted herself as she was surrounded by these good people.

Creak...

When everyone was done wearing the sweaters, the door was opened from the outside. Vernon, wearing a silver-navy blue sweater stepped inside first.

"Oh! Everyone has worn it. Calix and I..."

Vernon’s gaze fell on Evelyn. In the split second, his blaring laughter echoed in the lounge.

"Hahaha! Mom! Did you do that?"

Aside from the smiling Andrian and Harper, everyone else was confused, including Calix who hadn’t entered the lounge.

"What? What? Why are you laughing?" Calix pushed Vernon inside, "What happ... argh! Eve!"

His sweater was the exact same one as Evelyn’s!

"Second Brother, you!"

Evelyn abruptly stood up, realizing something before she looked at Harper. Calix did the same.

"MOM!"

"Hahaha!"

Calix and Evelyn collectively called Harper, their faces flushing red. The others burst out laughing, including Leslie.
