Chapter 92: The Culprit Behind Their Daughter’s Accident
Dinnertime went smoothly. Calix didn’t mess with Old Madam Li like before. He shared conversations with the matriarch, Rowan and Bianca. Occasionally, Irene chimed in.
The ambiance was peaceful among them. While they had dinner, Leslie went to Sarah’s room. She wanted to see how the deceitful woman was faring.
Much to Leslie’s relief and satisfaction, Sarah was shivering under the blanket. She heard curses coming from the latter, prompting her to chuckle.
"Hurm... You’ll receive the end blow soon, Sarah. Enjoy staying under the blanket."
Snickering, Leslie swiftly left the maids’ quarters. She immediately returned to the dining room, waiting for everyone to finish dinner.
Calix would request to talk to Rowan and Bianca alone soon. Irene had been informed of her brother-in-law’s plan. She insisted on joining even though Calix said the meeting would end up being unpleasant.
"...enjoyed everything. The dishes suited my palate, Grandmother-in-law."
When Leslie got inside the dining room, she saw Calix conversing with Old Madam Li. Rowan, Bianca and Irene were finishing their drinks.
"That’s good to hear. Calix, how about staying the night? You can sleep in Charlene’s room. You couldn’t do that before, didn’t you?"
Old Madam Li wanted to keep Calix longer in this ancestral home. Envy spread among her friends once they know the identity of her first grandson-in-law.
"When did Second Young Master Xu get involved with your eldest granddaughter? I didn’t foresee their marriage at all."
"How could he agree to marry someone in a coma? Norah, does he care so much about your Charlene?"
"I heard he brought so many precious gifts when he visited you. How envious ah! I want to pair my granddaughter with First Young Master Qin but, he’s too rigid."
Old Madam Li didn’t even try to act humbly as she was showered with praises and jealousy. She deliberately exaggerated how much Calix cared about her, earning more envy from her friends.
Everyone in the high society knew how great the Xu family’s influence was, including the Qin’s. Being in-laws with them brought sky-high benefits.
Following Charlene Li’s marriage to Calix Xu, countless eyes began to view the Li family on more favorable terms.
"Unfortunately, I have to decline this time, Grandmother-in-law," replied Calix with a smile. He put down the tea cup on its saucer.
Old Madam Li’s smile froze. She already planned on calling her friends to play mahjong tomorrow morning. They could see for themselves how comfortable Calix was here.
"Oh... are you busy tomorrow?"
"I’ll head to the ancestral home tonight. My parents will arrive tomorrow morning. My siblings are already there. The Qingming festival is in a few days, after all."
Calix answered politely. He didn’t point out the obvious discomfort on Old Madam Li’s face.
Hearing that, Old Madam Li’s countenance regained its spirit. She quickly racked her brain, planning another matter.
"Ah, your parents are traveling the world, don’t they? If they stay longer this time, we can have a meal together. We haven’t properly celebrated your marriage."
Calix deepened his smile, understanding what Old Madam Li was trying to do.
"I’ll relay it to them, Grandmother-in-law. I have some things to talk about with my father-in-law tonight. Perhaps, we can include the meeting plan between our families."
"Sure, sure! You can tell your father-in-law everything," Old Madam Li plastered a huge grin on her face, "Rowan, listen to what Calix wants to say."
Rowan nodded, curious about what Calix had in mind. He simply replied, "Yes, Mother."
Soon, Old Madam Li left the dining room. One of the maids escorted her back to her bedroom. She bid farewell to Calix, hoping he realized the two families’ meal plan soon.
Once Old Madam Li disappeared behind the door, Rowan worriedly looked at Calix.
"You don’t have to follow your grandmother’s wish, you know. Don’t bother your parents with this. I heard they rarely stay longer in the country."
Calix placed his gaze on Rowan, quietly assessing the middle-aged man. The latter’s intonation and expression showed that he was not someone who dared make demands.
’How pathetic.’
Calix’s impression of Rowan slightly improved when the latter genuinely asked him to take care of Leslie, the abandoned daughter. To him, this man might try to change.
Calix understood fixing one’s personality was hard, especially when it had been deeply ingrained in someone for decades. It required time and hard work.
Yet, even if Rowan indeed wanted to change his personality for the better, the past hurt he unknowingly inflicted on his eldest daughter wouldn’t easily disappear.
The scars remained.
"Father, keep your worry at bay," Calix schooled his expression not to show any distaste, "I agree with Grandmother-in-law. Since my parents will be back, we should have a meal together."
"Oh... if you say so."
Rowan was flustered, thinking whether he heard it wrong or not.
Calix’s sounded polite as usual but, why did he hear a razor-sharp edge in the young man’s tone?
Leslie silently watched Calix and Rowan’s interaction. Her impassive countenance showed no traces of her feelings.
"Dad, Brother-in-law, let’s go now," Irene chimed in, breaking the momentary awkward silence, "Why don’t we sit in our lounge? I wonder what Brother-in-law wanna discuss with us."
Calix and Leslie noticed the impatient in Irene’s tone. The teenage girl could no longer wait.
"Yes, let’s go there," Bianca gently patted Rowan’s back, "We shouldn’t keep Calix waiting. He needs to go to his family home soon."
"Ah, yes, yes," Rowan nodded, agreeing with his wife, "Come, Calix."
The four of them headed to where Rowan and his family resided. Along the way there, they crossed paths with the maids. Eventually, they arrived at the family lounge.
Irene closed the door, being the last one to enter. Sitting next to Bianca, her gaze on Calix held her curiosity and anticipation.
Calix chuckled lightly seeing how obvious Irene’s feelings were. Leslie sat by his side, holding her eyes in Rowan and Bianca’s direction. He glanced at her, finding a calm facade on her face.
"Father and Mother, I actually want to talk about Charlene. I found her stolen pendant."
Sitting opposite his parents-in-law, Calix immediately brought up the important topic. No beating around the bush happened.
Caught off guard, Rowan and Bianca stared at Calix before looking at each other. They knew what the young man was talking about.
"Pendant? The jade pendant?" murmured Rowan, "Did it... really get lost? Charlene didn’t keep it safe somewhere?"
Shaking his head, Calix replied, "The pendant was stolen. I retrieved it from a pawnshop."
"What... But, how?"
Irene interjected, "I asked Brother-in-law’s help."
Rowan and Bianca were speechless. Their attention fell on their youngest daughter.
"Irene, how could you bother your brother-in-law like that?" Bianca softened her voice despite chiding Irene, "You should have told us. We’ll look for it."
"I’ve told you, Mom, Dad," Irene wandered her eyes from Bianca to Rowan, "But, you didn’t believe me. How could I ask again?"
"That..."
Bianca pursed her lips, unable to find a good answer. Rowan ashamedly lowered his head.
Without waiting, Calix delivered another shocking news.
"I also found out who pushed Charlene."
"W-what?"
Calix’s remarks shocked Rowan and Bianca, thundering in their minds. Wide-eyed in surprised, their gaze was locked on the young man.
"W-what do you mean? Calix, did... did you really know... who did it?"
"Yes," Calix answered. His expression showed no fluctuations, "It’s the same person who stole the pendant. The culprit is Sarah Yao."
"WHAT? Sarah?!"
Rowan almost sprang from the seat, unable to believe Calix’s words.
"Yes. It’s her."
Unfazed by Rowan and Bianca’s doubtful eyes, Calix placed a USB on the table.
"You can hear her confession here."
