Chapter 93: Shouldn’t You Two Do Something About This as Well?

Sarah?

The culprit for both cases was Sarah?!

How could Rowan and Bianca not be surprised?

They knew how close their daughter Charlene was to Sarah. Their friendship began when the latter started working at the Li family’s ancestral home as a live-in helper.

Unfortunately, neither of them knew that Sarah was simply using Charlene for her own benefit. Only Irene noticed this matter.

"Y-you said... she confessed to... pushing Charlene?"

Rowan’s shaky voice was replied to by Calix’s calm tone.

"Please judge it yourself, Father, Mother. The recording only has Sarah’s voice in it but, it’s sufficient already."

Calix didn’t dare to record a video when Leslie was tormenting Sarah. The spouses would surely ask about the movements of a pail of cold water, red lipstick and tissues without anyone visible holding them.

Hands quivering and eyes full of doubts, Rowan and Bianca kept shifting their eyes from Calix to the USB on the table. As usual, the young man’s composure was unrivaled.

Irene was frustrated but, she didn’t want to interfere when it was unnecessary. Her little face contorted, expressing her impatience.

Eventually, Rowan picked up the USB. It had an on-the-go function, allowing him to use it on his phone.

Calix smiled faintly. He didn’t mention that he actually had sent the recording to his father-in-law’s e-mail address, including several evidence involving the thefts.

Hehe, the USB’s appearance was for an impact although only a little.

Soon, the familiar cries came from the phone speaker, shattering the peace inside the lounge.

"Argh... ARGHHHH!"

"N-no! Who are you? Come out! Don’t try to scare me!"

"No! No! I didn’t! I didn’t mean to!"

"H-how could I confess? Ch-Charlene! First Miss, please! Have mercy! I didn’t mean to push you!"

"NO! No! I didn’t kill you! First Miss! You’re still alive! I didn’t kill you! Please, please! Let me go!"

"Umph! Umphhh! C-cough! Cough! S-sorry! I’ll admit! I’ll admit my sins!"

Blood drained from Rowan and Bianca’s face. They didn’t know why Sarah brought up Charlene’s name in this but, it was clear that she was terribly frightened.

Calix kept his faint smile. He explained, "I used some tactics to make her think Charlene’s soul was torturing her. It wasn’t elegant but, worked to get her confession."

Rowan and Bianca were too stunned to speak. On their side, Irene burst out laughing. Her merry giggles lessened the suffocating tension in the air.

"Hahaha! Serves her right! No wonder she gets a fever ah. She thought she was tortured by a ghost last night. Brother-in-law! A superb strategy!"

Irene showed two thumbs-up, prompting Calix to chuckle. Leslie was amused by the high school girl’s reaction.

"T-then... Sarah pushed Charlene... was it an accident, or what?"

Rowan felt his scalp tingling. His heart sank deeper into the abyss as he thought how unbelievable the culprit who caused his eldest daughter’s accident was.

Bianca shared the same tune. Never once did she imagine the closest maid to Charlene was the perpetrator.

"Father, Mother, you should ask her yourselves. I did this because I’m Charlene’s husband. I want to drag the culprit to justice. But, shouldn’t you two do something about it too?"

Calix didn’t mention anything about it being a pure accident.

Sarah pushed Leslie—Charlene—accidentally but, the confrontation happened because the former stole a bracelet from her. Not only that, she dared to steal the pendant.

How rotten her heart was to steal something from a gravely injured person?

"W-we... we understand..."

Calix’s words pricked into Rowan and Bianca’s conscience. They were ashamed to admit they did nothing to uncover the truth behind Charlene’s staircase accident.

Blowing a soft sigh, Calix spoke again, "I got the proofs of her going to the pawnshops. Including when she stole a bracelet from Charlene."

"W-wait? A bracelet?" Irene blurted out, surprised to hear that for the first time, "Is it a sapphire bracelet? The one Mom gifted to Big Sister?"

"I believe that’s the one."

Irene froze. She didn’t expect that Sarah dared to loot the bracelet from her elder sister too.

Even though Charlene didn’t wear the bracelet as often as she did with the pendant, she still treasured the present from their mother.

Calix subtly looked at Leslie, finding that her expression was still calm. But, storms were actually brewing beneath her facade.

"Father, Mother," Calix shifted his eyes back to Rowan and Bianca, "There’s one more thing. Charlene found out about that woman stealing the bracelet. Their quarrel was the cause of her accident."

Rowan frowned. He appeared to age a decade older in less than an hour. Regret clawed into his heart, bleeding his guilt out.

"...how did you know?"

Calix spoke as if he learned of the confrontation well, something that should only be known to Charlene and Sarah. Rowan inwardly guessed the possibility of Sarah exposing this matter out of pressure.

"I have my own special way of knowing," Calix shrugged, pretending to act nonchalantly, "I’ll leave the rest to you, Father, Mother. But, if you want, I can continue handling this matter."

"N-no, no, we’ll do it," replied the flustered Rowan. His grip on the phone became tighter, "You... you have done enough Calix. We should do this... from the beginning, but..."

"We have failed Charlene," Bianca interjected. Her stern voice expressed her remorse, "If not for you... listening to Irene, we wouldn’t even know that... the culprit is someone near us."

Bianca was angry but, the anger was more directed at herself than at Sarah. Clasping her hands together, she tried to keep her composure when tears threatened to spill from her eyes.

"Ahhh! What have I done to my own daughter? Or, Lord, what have I done? I’ve failed her! She almost died and I keep that wicked woman near!"

Bianca suddenly began slapping her thigh out of frustration, surprising Rowan and Irene. Calix and Lesli also didn’t foresee this.

"Bianca..." Rowan guiltily looked at his wife. He quickly held her hands, preventing her from hurting herself, "Stop, stop! We’ll punish Sarah, alright? We...argh!"

Calix was stunned. Leslie gasped in shock. Irene cried out in surprise.

Bianca slapped Rowan in the face!

"What do you mean stop? I’ve told you! I’ve told you to find out who did that to our daughter! But you’re too scared about upsetting your mother! Look! Our son-in-law did this favor to us!"

In the privacy of their bedroom, Bianca actually had pleaded with Rowan to investigate the accident. She also told him to look for the pendant which was claimed went missing by Irene.

But!

Every one of her pleas was for nothing!

Her cowardly husband refused to irritate his mother who was against the investigation. The old woman didn’t want to cause any fuss and attract more unwanted attention to their family.

Rowan clamped his mouth shut, too ashamed to speak up.

Calix shook his head in helplessness. He raised a hand, "Mother, please calm down. At least, we finally know who the culprit is."

Bianca bit her lower lips. Tears ran down her cheeks, expressing her sorrow.

"C-Calix... I can’t thank you enough..." Bianca sobbed, her body shivering out of rage and sadness, "P-please look after Charlene. About Sarah... we’ll handle her from here."

"I understand, Mother," Calix softened his voice, trying to reassure Bianca, "Please don’t worry about Charlene. I’ll take care of her."

Next to him, Leslie lowered her face, hiding her conflicted gaze.
