Chapter 91: She Had to Look for a Shaman and Get Talismans!
"Haa... so cold..."
Rolling to her right side, Sarah shivered under the thick blanket. Her face flushed red, caused by her hangover and fever.
"Urgh! My head!"
Sarah groaned weakly in pain. Her hangover was so terrible, amplifying the head throbbing when the fever entered the scene. She could only taste bile in her mouth.
"Curse you... stupid ghost... who made me like this?"
Tears rolled down from Sarah’s reddened eyes. Every inch of her body suffered in discomfort as the hot and cold sensation overwhelmed her.
Sarah drifted in and out of consciousness, hoping the medicine would make her fall asleep but, her wish didn’t come true. Her gaze on the wall next to her bed was blurry.
After being harassed by some kind of an invisible force last night, Sarah didn’t really recall what happened next. She screamed for forgiveness, begging until snots came out of her nose but, that ghost was still full of vendetta against her.
In the end, she collapsed out of exhaustion, almost pissing in her pants.
"Haa... It wasn’t First Miss’ ghost, right?" Sarah murmured in horror. Dread crawled up from the depths of her heart, spreading to her entire body, "She’s still alive... yes, alive. How could... a breathing person be a ghost?"
Sarah tried finding the answers to the mystical occurrence happening to her last night but, every single one of them only hurt her head. None of them was believable.
"Urgh! Cold!"
Sarah buried her body under the thick blanket, wishing the fever and hangover would go away. She still remembered being splashed by cold water for the second time.
Once she opened her eyes, Sarah found herself near the main gate of the Jadeite Peak. Horrified by what happened to her, she quickly ran to the security post.
Fortunately, the guards recognized Sarah working at the Li family’s ancestral home. Taking pity on the drenched woman, one of them took Sarah there by a motorbike.
Sarah cried, thanking the heavens. She would collapse if she had to walk all the way from the main gate to the compound where the Li family home was.
But, Sarah’s misfortune continued. The Li family’s guards noticed she came home terribly drunk. They reported her condition to Butler Yang who came berating her early in the morning.
"ARGH! Screw everyone! C-cough! Cough! I’ll quit soon and leave this hell pit!"
The face of the charming man from the nightclub resurfaced in Sarah’s mind. She swore to hit his family jewel the next time she saw him.
What a scammer!
Sarah was certain that the man approached her with a purpose. His husky voice persuaded her to keep drinking until she lost touch with what was happening around her.
That damn man!
Trapping an innocent woman like her with his beauty and charm!
ARGH!
Sarah squirmed under the blanket. She wanted to unleash her rage but, her weak condition stopped her.
Knock! Knock!
"Sarah! I’m coming in!"
The voice belonged to one of Sarah’s colleagues. Lowering the blanket from her face, she begrudgingly stared at the door. A young woman in the maid uniform stepped inside with a tray of food.
"How’s your fever and hangover?" asked the maid named Bella, "I brought you some congee. Eat it."
"...my head still hurts. What a curse."
Bella put the tray on the table next to Sarah’s bed. She put one hand on her hips, staring at the pitiful state of her colleague. Worry and curiosity flickered in her eyes.
"You don’t want to tell me what happened last night?"
Bella was surprised to hear that Butler Yang berated Sarah once again. The latter had just been scolded for being careless with First Miss Leslie’s belongings.
"I think... I need to see a shaman," Sarah mumbled, "I need to get some talismans. A ghost... a ghost is haunting me."
Bella exhaled a sigh, thinking that Sarah was spouting nonsense.
"Eat that congee. I need to go now. We’ll be busy for dinner," Bella recalled what Butler Yang reminded the maids earlier, "First Miss’ husband will come this evening. He surely likes coming here."
"W-what?" Sarah gasped, staring straight at Bella in horror, "W-who will come?"
"Master Calix Xu," replied Bella, "The second young master of the Xu family. He abruptly gets married to First Miss. Seems like he really respects her maiden family ah."
The rest of Bella’s words were inaudible to Sarah. Eye-wide in surprise, another sense of fear flared out in her body.
T-that man!
What if what happened... was because of him?
Bella frowned watching Sarah’s weird behavior. Shrugging, she stepped out of the room, leaving the sick person lost in her own world.
"Stop it, Sarah," Sarah scolded herself. She shook her head repeatedly, "You’re scaring yourself! Master Xu didn’t know anything! He didn’t!"
No matter how powerful Calix was, Sarah didn’t believe that he could pull out something as ghostly frightening as what happened last night.
Even though she was drunk, she knew what she was seeing!
No one held the lipstick, pinched her nose and even shoved a tissue ball into her mouth!
A ghost! Only an invisible ghost could do all that!
Shuddering in fear, Sarah quickly hid under the blanket. She ignored the steaming hot congee. The huge bundle on the bed trembled, showing how horrified she was.
Calix and Leslie didn’t know the embarrassing state Sarah was in.
Around six-thirty, both of them arrived at the Li family’s ancestral home. Their arrival, or rather Calix’s, was welcomed by Rowan, Bianca and Irene.
"Brother-in-law," Irene happily waved one hand at Calix, obviously excited with his appearance, "Did you bring anything to me?"
"Irene, how could you greet your brother-in-law like that?" Bianca lightly scolded Irene. She smiled apologetically to Calix.
"It’s fine, Mother," Calix smiled. He handed a paper bag to Irene, "I brought some cakes. Charlene will be happy if I pamper her sister on her behalf."
Calix’s remarks left no space for Rowan or Bianca to say anything else. They were reminded of their eldest daughter’s comatose state.
"Y-yes, Charlene will surely like that," Rowan quickly broke the momentary yet awkward silence, "Let’s go in, Calix. Your grandmother is waiting inside."
Calix smiled politely, "Yes, Father."
A happy Irene hugged the paper bag, intending to eat the cakes after dinner. Calix followed Rowan and Bianca into the house.
As usual, Old Madam Li waited in one of the drawing rooms. She was alone. There was no sight of her favorite granddaughter and daughter-in-law. Even Geoffrey was not there.
"Good evening, Grandmother-in-law," Calix still with the same way he addressed Old Madam Li. Smiling, he candidly asked, "Where’s Second Uncle Geoffrey and his family? Won’t they join us for dinner tonight?"
Old Madam Li’s smile stiffened. She immediately recalled what Geoffrey said to her before leaving the house earlier.
"I can’t stand being in the same room with him! He’s just a brat yet he acts high and mighty to me!"
Old Madam Li sensed that there was something more in Geoffrey’s sudden fear and hatred toward Calix but, she hadn’t questioned her beloved son yet.
"Your second uncle has dinner plans with his in-laws," replied Old Madam Li, "The others follow him."
"Oh, that’s a pity," Calix pretended to look a bit upset, "It’s fine. I’ll surely have another chance to dine with him, isn’t it, Grandmother-in-law?"
"Haha... yes, you will."
While Calix was toying with Old Madam Li, Leslie quietly looked at Rowan and Bianca. Her gaze was unfathomable.
