Chapter 90: She Would Be in Peace
Chapter 90: She Would Be in Peace
Leslie and Calix headed back to Graceville Manor at a quarter to one in the morning. Halfway there, he received a report from the leader of the bodyguards left behind to handle Sarah.
The wicked woman passed out from crying nonstop out of fear. The bodyguards dragged her back to Jadeite Peak before dumping her somewhere near the entrance security post.
"Wake her up. Let her run back to her quarters. Give me the recorder later."
Calix ordered the bodyguards to wake Sarah once they reached Jadeite Peak. They did as they were instructed, splashing water at her when she lay unconscious on the tarmac.
A frightened and sobbing Sarah found herself back at Jadeite Peak. The bodyguards had already concealed their presence. They watched her scrambling to her feet, running to the security post.
"Hahaha! Serves her right!"
Instead of Leslie, Calix was the one who laughed out loud over Sarah’s misfortune. The merry sound bounced off the walls of the moving vehicle.
Soon, Calix and Leslie arrived at Mapleview Hills. The entire posh neighborhood was blanketed in a comforting silence. The security guards were diligently patrolling the area.
"I’ll sleep in," Calix mumbled after letting out a huge yawn. He glanced at Leslie, "What about you?"
"Let me see. I don’t need much sleep anyway," replied Leslie with a giggle.
The spouses, no, partners-in-crime parted ways once they reached the second floor. Calix wished Leslie to have good dreams, which she reciprocated toward him.
"Haa..."
Leslie let out a loud sigh once she closed the door. Her eyes wandered from the floor to the bed where Charlene’s body was lying motionless. A plush blanket covered her from the base of her neck to her toe.
Holding the red velvet box of the pendant, Leslie floated to the bed. Mimo was also there, curling next to the body.
"I’ve found the pendant," Leslie repeated the words from the day, "Do you see this?"
Leslie carefully took out the pendant with the delicate platinum chain. She draped it on Charlene’s neck. A gush of emotions surged forward, infusing her heart with a sense of regret and helplessness.
|Leslie, the pendant is pretty.|
Mimo jumped onto Leslie’s lap, staring at the jade. Hugging the crochet fox toy, she nodded.
"I taught that woman some lessons. We’ll give her the final blow tomorrow," whispered Leslie, a sense of hope tinged in her voice, "Now that I’ve gotten the pendant back, I hope she’ll be in peace."
Leslie hadn’t remembered what Charlene’s second request was. She found it odd that the matter completely vanished from her mind, making her wonder if some kind of trigger was needed.
|She’ll be in peace, Leslie,| Mimo tapped one paw on Leslie’s arm as if to reassure her, |I know that you’re worried about her second request but, please believe me. Like finding Poppy, you’ll get to fulfill it too.|
Leslie’s lips melted into a smile. She hugged Mimo tighter, comforting herself with Calliope’s lingering scent. A soft kiss was pressed on the crochet fox toy’s head.
"Yes. I will."
In almost two weeks of her transmigration, Leslie had already managed to uncover the truth behind the staircase accident. She retrieved the pendant successfully and punished the culprit as well.
Leslie couldn’t help but wonder what else would unfold in the future.
"Let’s go to sleep, Mimo," Leslie gently stroked Mimo’s head. A yawn escaped her mouth, "I’m kinda tired."
|Good night, Leslie.|
Mimo put its pointy nose on Leslie’s right cheek, seemingly trying to imitate the act of pecking. Chuckling softly, she gave the fox toy one last hug before lying down to sleep.
Leslie didn’t dream of anything but, strangely she felt so comfortable. Unnoticed by her, someone whispered gently in the air.
"Thank you."
A smile carved softly on Leslie’s lips. She fell deeper in her sleep.
A few hours later, the first sunray lit up the horizon.
As mentioned by Calix, he slept in on the next day. Saturday morning was a perfect time for that. He didn’t wake up until almost eleven.
Leslie couldn’t sleep for long even if she wanted to. Her body had recharged her lost energy. She spent the morning reading the romance novel at the rooftop pool.
"Oh, here you are. As expected."
Calix’s voice echoed from the back, prompting Leslie to turn her head slightly.
CEO Xu wore a deep blue sweater and loose white jogger pants. He brought along a tray of sandwiches and two thermal flasks.
"You came prepared," Leslie chuckled. She put down the book, "Did you make them yourself, or Aunt Wendy?"
"Mine, duh," Calix smirked. He placed the tray on the table between two lounge chairs before sitting down, "Have you eaten? We won’t go to the Li’s until late afternoon."
Calix had already contacted Rowan, saying that he would come to have dinner later. His father-in-law immediately agreed. The middle-aged man didn’t know that he would come bringing chaos.
Calix and Leslie enjoyed the sandwich when the former remembered something.
"Irene texted me this morning. I only read it just now," Calix took the slim smartphone out of the pocket of his pants, "She said Sarah was scolded by the butler because she came home so wasted. She’s down with a fever now."
"What? Hahaha!" Leslie covered her mouth, her shoulders shaking, "Seems like she got so scared ah. Hehe, it’s a pity I can’t see her now."
The live-in staff at the Li family’s ancestral home were allowed to go to nightclubs. But, on the condition that they couldn’t return heavily drunk.
Butler Yang had never compromised on that matter. Many learned hard lessons after getting halves of their supposed paychecks.
"Leslie."
Calix called, looking a bit hesitating. His action piqued Leslie’s interest.
"What?"
Pursing his lips, Calix shook his head slowly. He forced himself to continue talking, "You really want me to say all that to your parents? Are you alright with that?"
Leslie paused from munching the sandwich. She understood what Calix meant. He was worried whether regret might come to her or not.
Yesterday, Leslie made a request. She wanted Calix to be blunt when talking to Rowan and Bianca.
"They’ll be sad surely but, please tell me as I’ve asked you," Leslie smiled, trying to reassure Calix that she had made up her mind, "It might be late but, I want them to know what I feel all this time."
Charlene chose to leave because of how wrongly she was treated by her parents and family. Even though she had a good relationship with Irene, it was not enough to make her stay.
Leslie could see that Rowan and Bianca actually cared about their eldest daughter. Yet, they didn’t protect her as they should.
Rowan and Bianca were more inclined to appease Old Madam Li and Geoffrey’s family. They thought playing safe was the right answer for everything.
Yet, it was not.
Eventually, their actions caused their eldest daughter to drift far away from them. The saddest part was, they didn’t even realize it.
Ultimately, this was Rowan and Bianca’s own doings.
Looking at how firm Leslie was, Calix nodded. He no longer tried to change her mind.
"Alright. I’ll do as you wish," Calix promised, "After this, let’s open a new Chapter of your life."
Leslie’s lips melted into a smile. With a giggle, she nodded.
