Chapter 84: What Led to the Staircase Accident

If it was up to Leslie, she wanted to mess with Sarah longer. The latter was still crying out loud over the cracked essence bottle. She acted very pathetic as if losing her precious heirloom.

’I should head back to Calix.’

Shaking her head, Leslie turned around to leave. Instead of wasting her time here, she wanted to get back to Graceville Manor as quickly as possible.

"It’s fine..." Leslie comforted herself as she floated down the hallway of the quarters, "She’ll get her punishment."

The blurred memories Leslie received earlier gradually regained their clarity. She could perfectly see how malicious Sarah’s expression was before Charlene blacked out due to her injury.

Leslie initially thought the memories would come after she had successfully gotten the pendant back. This was much better. Finally, she knew the cause of the accident.

’The thing that led to that was...’

It turned out that Charlene was questioning Sarah over the missing of her sapphire bracelet before the accident. The jewelry was gifted by Bianca on her twentieth birthday.

Charlene kept the bracelet in a hidden compartment of her wardrobe. It went missing after she returned from her one-week work trip.

The only person who knew of its whereabouts was Sarah.

Instead of telling anyone about it, Charlene directly confronted Sarah after getting a piece of evidence.

"Why did you take it? You know that... it’s a present I got from my mother."

"First Miss, how could you accuse me? I know nothing. You’ve just misplaced it somewhere."

Sarah thought Charlene was simply throwing an accusation. Little did she know that the latter found her trail of going to the pawnshop nearby.

Fortunately, the bracelet was still there. Charlene also managed to secure footage of Sarah’s visit during the time she was away.

Sarah’s stupidity made it easier for Charlene.

"Nah..." Leslie shrugged, thinking of some other thing, "The author made it easier for her to catch Sarah. It’s just a prelude to the staircase accident scene."

Shaking her head in helplessness, Leslie recalled the rest of the scene.

When Charlene touched Sarah’s arms during the confrontation, the panicked maid pushed her away, leading to the fall.

Charlene rolled down the high staircase. Her head bumped into the cabinet downstairs. Drifting in and out of consciousness, Sarah reached her before grabbing the pendant from her neck.

"Hah! Serve you right! You better die here!"

Darkness drowned the rest of the scene. But, as the new owner of those memories, Leslie faintly heard the sound of footsteps running away.

’It’s... so unpleasant.’

Leslie rubbed her arms, feeling the shivers spread to her entire body.

The striking pain that came from the fall, the devastation due to the betrayal... she was experiencing it secondhand through the memories.

Before Leslie passed through the walls of the lounge, she forced herself not to look downcast.

"Calm down, Leslie," Leslie patted her cheeks several times, "Sarah won’t get away. She’ll get what she deserves."

Feeling slightly better, Leslie went inside the lounge. Calix, Irene, Bianca and the rest were still there. The clock was showing to six-thirty.

Calix noticed Leslie’s presence. He pretended to look at his wristwatch, "I really need to go now. I might get there late."

After Leslie went out, Calix said that he would stay for a bit longer before taking his leave. Old Madam Li and Bianca persuaded him to have dinner with them but, he politely refused.

Now that Leslie had returned, it was time to go.

"You really can’t have dinner with us?" Old Madam Li raised her brows, "Is it an important gathering?"

"My friends, Xander and Davin want to discuss something about business with me," lied Calix smoothly, using his best friends’ names, "We should’ve met last week but, I was busy with my marriage. We can’t delay it anymore."

"Oh... the young master of the Qin family," Old Madam Li’s eyes glimmered once she heard Xander’s name, "Later, you should invite your friends here. We can get to know each other."

"If there’s a suitable time," Calix smiled politely, not promising anything.

Leslie quietly registered the delighted look on Old Madam Li’s face. It mirrored Deena’s joyful expression.

Did they think they could connect to the Qin family through Calix? By pushing Gladys to Xander?

Perhaps, they were thinking of shifting their target from Calix to Xander. After all, everyone thought CEO Qin was still single.

Leslie shrugged, letting them dream of the impossible.

Bianca and Irene sent Calix off to the door. Rowan and Geoffrey had yet to arrive. They might get caught in bad traffic during rush hours.

"Brother-in-law, see you again," Irene happily waved at Calix. Her countenance was better than before, "Treat me to good food again."

"As you wish," Calix laughed. He opened the car door, "If you want, come looking for me at the company. When else can you receive first-class treatment of being the CEO’s sister-in-law?"

Irene burst out laughing while Bianca smiled apologetically.

"Calix, you don’t have to spoil Irene so much. Don’t hinder your work."

"It’s okay, Mother," Calix grinned, trying to reassure his mother-in-law, "Since Charlene’s not here yet, I’ll take care of her sister on her behalf."

Bianca had nothing else to say. She thanked Calix for being thoughtful.

Soon, Calix’s sedan left the Li family’s ancestral home. The last traces of daylight had vanished completely, consumed by the darkness of the night.

"Did you follow her just now?" asked Calix cautiously. He glanced at Leslie, finding it difficult to see her face in the dim light.

"She’s agitated. What happened before... I remember it clearly now. But..."

Leslie trailed off. A question was nagging at the back of her mind.

"What is it?" Calix softened his tone, "Something’s still bothering you?"

"Yeah..." Leslie exhaled a sigh. Fiddling with her thumbs, she hesitated, "I wonder... why didn’t she run away yet? We fought at the staircase because... she stole my bracelet. It’s a gift from my mother."

"What? She stole... from you?"

In disbelief, Calix frowned. He didn’t expect that was the cause of the staircase accident.

"You found out she stole the bracelet from you. Then, you confronted her there? Did she intentionally push you?"

Leslie answered every one of Calix’s questions. She clarified that the push was accidental but, the pendant stealing was not.

"Haa... I’m so mad now. How could she be so shameless?" complained Calix angrily.

Leslie chuckled before guessing, "Did she think I won’t oust her once I wake up later? Or, is she hoping that I’ll be amnesiac?"

"Huh! That’s too dramatic."

Calix’s dissatisfaction toward Sarah prompted Leslie to laugh harder. But, it sounded forced.

"This can’t do. I’m so mad now. Aren’t you angry, huh?"

Calix scowled. The orange lights of the passing lampposts fell on his countenance.

"I’m mad too but, what else can I do?" Leslie shrugged, trying to sound nonchalant, "I’m glad that I remember now. She’ll get into our trap soon."

"Yes, she will," Calix tapped one finger on the steering wheel, an idea struck his mind, "No, no, this can’t do. Let’s go somewhere. A place that can soothe our steaming hearts."

"What?" Leslie laughed at Calix’s choice of words, "Where?"

"I think you’ll love it. Don’t ladies like such a place?"

Leslie was confused but, Calix didn’t reveal anything until they reached the venue.

"A park?"

Dancing pink petals were reflected in Leslie’s widened eyes. Calix brought her to a park!

A proud grin was plastered on Calix’s face, "Come. There’s a river here. Let’s go boating."

"Huh?"
