Chapter 85: Boating Under Peach Blossom Night Sky
"We’re going to... boating?"
Leslie blinked, unable to believe what Calix’s impromptu plan was.
"This park has a river. We can go boating," Calix took off his tie before unbuttoning the two top buttons of his shirt, exposing the base of his front neck, "Come. Stop thinking about that woman."
"That sounds good," Leslie’s smile widened, already imagining what a beautiful scenery it would be, "But, people will see you boating alone. Wanna be called a loner?"
"Ignore them. I’ll wear it as a pretense so I can talk to you. Even if people see me talking, they’ll think I’m on a phone call."
Calix grabbed something from the glove box, a pair of earbuds with a short strap. The black strap nestled at the back of his neck as it connected the earbuds.
"Genius," Leslie chuckled.
"I am," replied Calix, earning more laughter from Leslie.
Calix and Leslie stepped out of the car, seeing people around them. The time was little over seven in the evening.
Many couples strolled in the park, enjoying their intimate time under the silvery moonlight. The pinkish hues cast by the swaying peach blossom trees added more depth to their romantic night stroll.
"The rental’s over there," Calix gestured in a direction with a tilt of his chin, "Before you start asking, I was dragged here when Xander wanted to surprise Violet with boating. That’s why I know."
Calix’s explanation stunned Leslie before she burst out laughing. She pressed her tummy, thinking how funny his action was.
Why did he suddenly tell her that?
Did he think she would ask if he ever came here with a woman in the past?
"Hahaha! Yes, yes, oh pitiful CEO Xu," Leslie rubbed her eyes, feeling them watery, "Instead of boating with a woman, you got dragged by your lovesick friend. It’s okay, I understand."
"...let’s go."
Calix’s cheeks had a pink tint. He inwardly scolded himself for explaining something without being asked for it. Now, Leslie was laughing at him for being silly.
Leslie pursed her lips tight, trying to hold back the rest of her laughter.
The particular scene happened quite early in the book. Davin suggested Xander go boating with Violet at a park last autumn. Because it was a public place, the female and male leads wore disguises.
’So... this is the park in that scene.’
Leslie threw her gaze around as she walked on the paved walkway alongside Calix. She spotted the river mentioned by him earlier.
The dancing petals above looked mesmerizing against the night sky as the gentle breeze carried the delicate fragrance of the peach blossoms. Some of them fall to the river’s surface before floating.
"It’s so pretty," murmured Leslie, the light in her eyes softened, "We’ve just come here but, I feel better now."
Leslie’s words reached Calix, prompting him to deepen his smile. Without looking at her, he responded, "You should focus on the present moment. About that woman, stop worrying about her ah."
The night air was quite chilly but, Leslie felt warmth traveling from her heart to her entire body. Despite only knowing Calix for a week, she could no longer count how many times his consideration touched her heart.
A graceful smile curved on Leslie’s lips. She whispered softly, "Yes."
Finally, Calix and Leslie reached the boat rental. A few couples were already rowing boats on the river.
"Mister, are you going to row it alone?" asked the young man at the counter, "Where’s your date?"
The staff had already spotted Calix when the latter heading in this direction. He felt weird to see a handsome gentleman alone in a park brimming with couples.
"My date’s here," Calix grinned, pointing to the earbuds, "My wife’s away so, I’m alone now. We’ll just chat over the call."
The young man was amazed, "Wow, how romantic. Mister, come, you can use this boat. You should row to that area. Send pretty photos to your wife."
Leslie was unable to contain her chuckle. She applauded CEO Xu for his stellar performance. Calix smiled smugly, prompting her to laugh harder.
The staff wished Calix to have a good time boating. He immediately left to attend to the counter.
"CEO Xu, your acting is good," Leslie purposely teased Calix, "If your fangirls know what you’re doing for your wife now, they’ll go crazy."
Calix raised one of his brows, "Let them be. What I do now is exclusively to my wife."
"Hahaha!"
Leslie shook her head, feeling so helpless against Calix’s smooth sweet-talk. He said it as if they were a married couple in love, not due to some strange circumstances.
"Quick! Get in the boat!" Leslie was already sitting on the boat, looking at Calix standing on the deck, "I wanna see CEO Xu’s rowing skill."
"Hah! Let me show you another one of my abilities," Calix scoffed.
He carefully stepped inside. His movement gently rocked the boat on the water’s surface. Grabbing the paddles, he slowly maneuvered the boat away from the deck.
"The peach blossoms look like giant canopies," Leslie lifted one of her hands, spreading the palm to catch the falling pink petals, "They’re so pretty."
Calix’s smile softened as he slowly paddled the boat. He was happy to see Leslie’s countenance returned to its cheerful state.
Facing the one who almost killed her surely brought up unpleasantness. Even though the return of her memories would help them in catching the culprit, it was still hard on her.
Racking his brain, Calix thought of what else he could do to further lift her mood.
Aha!
"Among all four seasons, which one do you like the most?"
"Haa?"
Calix’s random question stunned Leslie. Still, she started thinking about it.
"Hurm... I can’t choose between spring and autumn. Both have pretty scenery. Summer... I dislike heat and winter, it can get too cold. Spring and autumn’s weather and temperature are just perfect for me."
Leslie slightly frowned as she weighed the options. She didn’t notice how hard Calix tried to refrain from laughing.
Calix bit his lower lip. He didn’t expect that Leslie would think seriously about the answer.
"I think spring is the number one for me, autumn comes second," decided Leslie after pondering so much about it.
"Because spring has more beautiful flowers?" Calix made a guess.
"Well, one of the reasons," Leslie paused, thinking for a moment before resuming, "Autumn is pretty but... doesn’t everything was dying?"
Calix blinked, unable to register those words in his mind until a moment later. He perceived something was wrong with Leslie’s intonation.
Calix frowned, hesitating whether to ask about it or not. He unconsciously tightened the grip on the paddles.
"Aside from the general matter... did something happen in autumn that made you sad?"
Leslie blinked, surprised that Calix came up with such a question.
"That..."
Leslie lowered her gaze, staring at the water’s surface. The soft radiance of the moon illuminated their silhouettes, leaving an ethereal glow on its wake.
’Someone dear to me died one autumn.’
Closing her eyes, Leslie couldn’t bring herself to mention the death of her previous life’s lover to Calix. For some reason, she had a strong feeling that it would ruin the peaceful ambiance around them.
"Don’t you think the withering autumn leaves, although beautiful, can be somewhat depressing?"
Calix blinked. He quickly nodded, "Yes, that makes sense. By winter, everything’s gone."
"Yeah... hehe."
Calix didn’t point out how obviously Leslie tried to dodge the subject. Smiling faintly, he could only hope that matter wasn’t too saddening for her.
