Chapter 83: Did They Suspect Anything About the Accident?
"Geez... she does this on purpose. She can just ask anyone to get it for her."
An irritated Sarah bitterly complained as she grabbed the art book Irene ordered her to get. It was placed just on her study table. Anyone could easily spot it.
Sarah had the urge to crumple this worthless art book but, she needed to hold back. Butler Yang was still mad at her over the accident that happened a few days ago.
"Take care of First Miss Charlene’s room properly. If you ever slack off because she’s not here, I’ll rearrange your duties. Do you want to work at the warehouse?"
Butler Yang’s stern reminder annoyed Sarah but, there was nothing she could do. She didn’t want to be transferred to the warehouse far in the backyard.
Gritting her teeth, Sarah threw her gaze around the spacious bedroom.
Even though this place was not as large as Gladys’ private room, precious and high-end items still filled the place. Seeing them invoked Sarah’s ugly jealousy.
"Tsk, what a high school girl needs so much skincare for? Look at those, her new spring dresses. What a waste of money."
Hideous envy brimmed in Sarah’s heart. Pursing her lips, she quickly calmed down by reminding herself of her next day off this Saturday. Sarah wanted to go to a club on the night before.
"It’s fine. I’ll get an expensive spring dress too. I’ll hook up with someone rich."
Sarah grinned, thinking of her fat bank account. It suddenly got a huge chunk of money inside after she did something beneficial to herself.
Still feeling slightly soured, Sarah walked out of Irene’s bedroom. The nearer she got to the lounge, the twisted her gut turned, surpassing her initial irritation.
Young Master Xu, the new husband of First Miss Charlene was there. Sarah shuddered, thinking back to the morning after she accidentally broke the perfume she intended to steal.
Sarah crossed paths once with Calix before he left. It was just a momentary encounter from afar but, she still remembered how frosty the man’s gaze was when their eyes collided.
As if he was looking at something degradingly filthy.
The chill spread deep into Sarah’s bones, causing her to freeze in horror.
He didn’t know that she wanted to steal the perfume, right?
He was simply annoyed because he couldn’t stay inside his wife’s maiden bedroom.
’No, no. He doesn’t know.’
Sarah inwardly shook her head, chasing away the frightening thoughts.
Young Master Xu wouldn’t ever know what really happened. Not even Butler Yang sensed it. The old man simply thought she dropped the perfume bottle when cleaning the vanity table.
Knock! Knock!
Sarah stepped inside the lounge. She greeted Old Madam Li and everyone politely, tucking her hideous self far behind. Then, she approached Irene.
"Third Miss, this is your art book," Sarah softened her voice. She handed the art book with both hands to Irene, "Do you have anything else for me to do?"
"Thank you, Sarah. I want to show this to my brother-in-law," Irene smiled, taking the book from the maid. She quickly added, "Oh! I forgot. We’re just talking about you."
Sarah flinched, "...about me?"
"Yes," Irene nodded a few times. She glanced at Calix, "My brother-in-law wants to hear more about my sister. I told him that you’re her closest maid."
"That’s right," Calix placed his gaze on Sarah. Crossing his right leg on the left, he casually stated, "As you know, I can’t talk to my wife now. It’s reassuring to know that she has a maid she can trust."
"I’m honored... to hear that, Master Xu," Sarah bowed politely. She placed both hands in front of her abdomen, "I’ve been by First Miss’ side from her teenage years."
Even though Calix sounded calm, Sarah sensed that he didn’t view her favorably. His smile didn’t reach his eyes.
The same as before.
Old Madam Li and Deena glanced at each other. They were actually bored of the conversation but, they still had to listen to it.
If not, Calix would continue thinking that they mistreated Charlene, which was the truth they wanted to bury.
"Sarah is just a few years older than Charlene," Bianca fondly recalled the memory, unaware of her mother-in-law and Deena’s feelings, "She started working here at eighteen, didn’t you, Sarah?"
"Y-yes, First Madam," Sarah almost stuttered, replying to Bianca, "First Miss Charlene was still in high school. If I’m not mistaken, she was in her first year."
"Oh, just the same as me now," Irene giggled, "I’m in my first year too."
"Yes, Third Miss."
"Then, you should know everything, or almost everything about your miss, right?" Calix talked while picking up the tea cup, "No wonder my wife is close to you. I heard she didn’t have many friends at school."
"T-that... First Miss is quite an introverted, Master Xu. I simply did my job but, First Miss Charlene’s kindness drew me to be comfortable with her."
Sarah’s guts kept churning. She wanted to get out of this lounge as soon as she could but, it seemed like they still wanted her to stay.
"Sarah is so good, Brother-in-law," Irene chuckled, trying not to be too obvious with her intention, "I can count on her. You know, she helped me look for Big Sister’s treasured pendant."
Sarah flinched. She inadvertently widened her gaze, terror ghosted down her spine.
"Oh, the one you said belonged to your maternal grandmother?" Calix pretended to be interested, "Before she handed it to your sister?"
"Yes, yes."
What was this?
What in hell was this?
Sarah stiffly moved her eyes to the smiling Irene. She recalled nothing about looking for Charlene’s missing pendant.
What she remembered was...
"Third Miss, don’t waste your time. I’m sure First Miss keeps the pendant somewhere else. Let’s wait until she wakes up, en?"
When Irene asked Sarah to help her find the jade pendant because her parents and anyone else didn’t care about it, she persuaded the former to stop.
To Sarah, Irene was a sickly and naive teen girl. When the latter looked discouraged by her rejection masked by persuasion, she thought Irene had stopped thinking about this matter.
"Ah, Sarah, we keep you here so long. You should return to your other tasks now."
Bianca’s gentle voice pulled Sarah out of her reverie. Startled, she nodded slightly.
"U-understand, First Madam. I’ll go first."
Sarah kept a calm facade as she greeted the others. But, her expression sank as soon as she closed the door of the lounge behind her.
"Shit! Do they suspect something?"
Sarah murmured under her breath. Her frightened gaze looked around the empty hallway, a sense of horror threw her mind into a chaotic state.
Unknown to Sarah, someone invisible was watching her suspicious behavior right in front of her.
Leslie frowned, silent fury and disappointment spiraled in her heart, flaring out to her entire body.
Those were Charlene’s feelings, caused by this woman’s absolute betrayal.
Sarah quickly left the hallway, heading to the maids’ quarters. Leslie hovered behind the woman, her heart was still troubled by the negative feelings.
The quarters were empty because everyone was still working but, Sarah didn’t care. She locked the door of her room before slumping on the bed.
"It’s just a misunderstanding, right? No one knows what I’ve done, isn’t it?"
Sarah was so preoccupied with her thoughts that she didn’t realize a glass bottle was rolling on the table before...
Crash!
"W-what? Argh! My new essence!"
Sarah jumped to the floor, surprised to see the expensive bottle of essence had a big crack. The milky liquid leaked out of the thin gap.
Leslie impassively watched Sarah panicking.
